Leesburg (GA) Lee County defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon decommitted from Michigan on Monday. He had committed to Michigan back in June (LINK).

Hit the jump for more.

This is a pretty big deal, because Michigan needs defensive tackles in the 2017 class. Solomon is 6’3″, 295 lbs. and is a 247 Composite 4-star, the #5 defensive tackle, and #78 overall. He has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, and many others. He says that he will consider Michigan going forward, but that usually does not end well for the school that received the initial commitment. With Chris Wormley and Ryan Glasgow graduating after this season, that leaves the following at defensive tackle for next year:

  • Maurice Hurst, Jr. (RS Sr.)
  • Bryan Mone (RS Jr.)
  • Michael Dwumfour (So.)
  • James Hudson (Fr.)
  • Phillip Paea (Fr.)

That doesn’t account for potential early departures, and some have suggested that Hurst and/or Mone could leave after this season for the NFL. Michigan could move Rashan Gary from strongside end down to defensive tackle, and Michael Onwenu could play defense instead of offensive guard. But Michigan needs some more numbers, and it’s not a great plan to count on freshman linemen on either side of the ball.

The Wolverines will probably continue to recruit South Jordan (UT) Bingham defensive tackle Jay Tufele and Stockton (CA) St. Mary’s defensive tackle Popo Aumuvae. They may open up their board even more and pursue additional prospects, but options are limited. Solomon was a surprise commit when he pledged, so it’s not surprising that he changed his mind; but Michigan backed off recruiting other DTs at the time, so now they have to play catch-up.

Solomon’s teammate, 2018 linebacker/safety Otis Reese, remains committed to the Wolverines. Michigan also has a pledge from Dayton (OH) Dunbar linebacker Antwuan Johnson.

A shame, but more of a never-to-be-a-Wolverine than an ex-Wolverine. And a good argument for how little a “commitment” means until signing day, and for not pulling back on recruiting after you get a verbal like this, so far ahead of February.

    Rest of the story, apparently:

Just one of those mistakes that happen when you’re dealing with so many recruits. Guess he thought it was too big an insult to overlook.

I think this had more to do with him committing too soon without getting a blessing from his mom.
