Preview: Michigan vs. UNLV

(image via Las Vegas Sun)

RUSH OFFENSE vs. UNLV RUSH DEFENSE
Michigan had a disappointing week against East Carolina with 31 carries for 122 yards, which was just 3.9 yards per carry. There were too many plays allowed in the backfield, and that fell on both the blockers and the running backs. We all know Blake Corum (10 carries, 73 yards, 1 TD) and Donovan Edwards (12 carries, 37 yards) are stars, but the more interesting aspect will be how Michigan’s tackles look. Last week Michigan started Karsen Barnhart on the left and Myles Hinton on the right, but the belief is that La’Darius Henderson and Trente Jones will start at those positions, respectively. UNLV ranks #106 nationally in rushing defense (179 yards allowed in one game), but that might be a bit misleading. The Runnin’ Rebels allowed just 19 yards on 8 carries before things got out of hand against Bryant. UNLV’s leading tackler is 6’3″, 230 lb. Arkansas transfer Jackson Woodard, who had 12 stops last week. Cornerback Thomas Andersen (6’1″, 185) was second on the team in tackles with 8. Nickelback Jerrae Williams (5’10”, 185) had an impressive 3.0 tackles for loss last week alone in UNLV’s 4-2-5 defense.
Advantage: Michigan

Michigan’s 10 Longest Plays vs. UNLV

Ty Isaac (image via Detroit News)

This is a feature I started last year, with the ten longest plays against any particular opponent. I didn’t break it out last week since Michigan had never played East Carolina before, and now the opponent is UNLV, whom Michigan has only played once. So each of the following plays will take you back to 2015, when Michigan won by a score of 28-7.

  1. Ty Isaac 76-yard touchdown run (2015)
  2. J.J. McCarthy 47-yard touchdown pass to Roman Wilson (2023)
  3. Jehu Chesson 36-yard touchdown run (2015)
  4. Jayden Denegal 35-yard pass to Semaj Morgan (2023)
  5. Jabrill Peppers 31-yard kickoff return (2015)
  6. Channing Stribling 30-yard interception return (2015)
  7. Semaj Morgan 28-yard kickoff return (2023)
  8. Cornelius Johnson 26-yard run (2023)
  9. Kalel Mullings 26-yard kickoff return (2023)
  10. J.J. McCarthy 25-yard pass to Roman Wilson (2023)

Here’s Isaac’s 76-yarder:

Michigan vs. East Carolina Awards

J.J. McCarthy (image via NBC Sports)

Let’s see more of this guy on offense . . . Trente Jones. I really like the way Trente Jones plays football. On Saturday he was used mostly as an extra lineman or a tight end, reprising his primary role from 2021. But he just bullies people in the run game and does a great job with his body positioning. I think his pass protection might be a little questionable at tackle, but I think he deserves to be on the field more.

Let’s see less of this guy on offense . . . Myles Hinton. Hinton earned the start in game one even though Jim Harbaugh suggested that he would start a different set of tackles in week two, presumably La’Darius Henderson at left tackle and Jones on the right side. Hinton is a mammoth at 6’6″ and 340 lbs., but he appeared to make several mental mistakes on Saturday, especially in the run game. He said in the post-game that he did not play well. I do still think he can be a good player, but perhaps he needs a little more time to adjust to Michigan’s scheme.
