Deron Irving-Bey

Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Deron Irving-Bey is transferring out of the program and is headed to Central Michigan. Irving-Bey is a 6’5″, 274-pounder who was a 4-star, the #9 strongside end, and #249 overall in the class of 2017. He will join fellow 2017 recruit Ja’Raymond Hall, an offensive guard, at CMU.

I gave Irving-Bey a TTB Rating of 59 when he committed (LINK) and parked him at #69 in this year’s countdown (LINK). This transfer is not at all surprising, though I thought he would stick around for a couple years before transferring. Despite playing in the 2017 Army All-American Bowl, I thought he was overrated by the recruiting sites.

Michigan has now lost three commits from that 2017 class, including Hall, Irving-Bey, and defensive end Corey Malone-Hatcher, who medically retired.

I really don’t think we’ve lost one ball player from the entirety of this recent batch of defections. I also don’t think we’ve lost anything that approaches “depth” either. Maybe I’m just feeling mean after a week of flu, but I don’t think I care about losing any of these guys or all of them.

I was never excited to see Crawford running out there. He’s hit people downfield, but watching him run a pattern made me crabby. Maybe if there had been a real WR coach, but I dunno.

McDoom has the great name, and some speed. He made one tough-ish catch.

I hope they all do well at school, football and life, but beyond that … Next!

If he’s already on campus up in Mt. Pleasant, then either he, or the coaches, or both, knew about this for a little while.

I suspect this is a sign of things to come — more and more transfers as players seek their level. It’ll make maintaining depth more challenging for schools like Michigan; it’ll be a boon for schools like CMU and WMU; and it’ll suck for those players who had no offers but CMU or WMU, and they get shoved down the depth chart as transfers come in.

    This explains the Kemp move.

That created some depth questions at DE; with Paye the only remotely experienced backup. But freshman can often contribute, rotating in a pass-rushing role if nothing else. Tougher at DT where strength, size, and technique more often need to be developed.

DT’s still fine for now, even with DIB gone. Beyond the top 3 there’s Jeter, Marshall, Kemp. 6 is about the minimum you want but they’re all guys who project as contributors in 2018.

Kemp’s move is about 2019 and beyond. Marshall and Mone will graduate so only 3 other DTs project to return (Solomon, Dwumfour, Jeter). That’s a problem.

Michigan will likely address by switching over some DE after they’ve packed on pounds and been coached up by Mattison. Drawing from OL is another option once that is sorted out.

Still, DT needs to be a recruiting priority. Especially if Dwumfour or Solomon blow up like we hope.

FWIW, Kemp moved to DT before Irving-Bey decided to transfer. I think the Kemp move might help explain the Irving-Bey transfer, although I think there are other factors, too.
