Ex-Wolverine Updates: Week 2

September 15, 2016

Pharaoh Brown had his first TD catch since his devastating 2014 knee injury (image via Miami Herald)

Former DE commit Pharaoh Brown: Brown made 5 catches for 55 yards and 1 touchdown in Oregon’s 44-26 win over Virginia.

Former WR/S Brian Cole II: Through two games at East Mississippi Community College, Cole has 17 tackles and 1 fumble recovery, which he returned for 21 yards. EMCC is 1-1.

Hit the jump for several more updates, including on Shaun Crawford, Derrick Green, Damien Harris, Brady Hoke, and Mike Weber.

Former CB commit Gareon Conley: Conley made 3 tackles and 1 interception in Ohio State’s 48-3 win over Tulsa.

Former CB commit Shaun Crawford: Crawford made 1 tackle in Notre Dame’s 39-10 victory over Nevada, but unfortunately, his bad injury luck continued. After suffering a torn ACL that caused him to miss the 2015 season, he tore his Achilles this weekend and will miss the rest of the year.

Former defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin: Now the head coach at Maryland, the Terrapins are 2-0 after a 52-13 win over Howard and a 41-14 win over Florida International.

Former RB Derrick Green: Green carried the ball 5 times for 31 yards in TCU’s 41-38 loss to Arkansas.

Former RB commit Damien Harris: Harris had 11 carries for 45 yards and 2 catches for 14 yards in Alabama’s 38-10 victory over Western Kentucky.

Former head coach Brady Hoke: Hoke’s defense allowed 195 yards passing and 193 yards rushing to Virginia in a 44-26 Oregon win. They made 6 sacks and 2 interceptions in the win.

Former LB signee Antonio Kinard: Kinard made 5 tackles and helped Cincinnati beat Purdue by a score of 38-20.

Former LB commit Darrin Kirkland, Jr.: Kirkland made 7 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack in Tennessee’s 45-24 win over Virginia Tech.

Former DT Ondre Pipkins: Pipkins made 1 tackle in Texas Tech’s 68-55 loss to Arizona State.

Former LB commit David Reese: Reese made 3 tackles in his collegiate debut, helping Florida win over Kentucky, 45-7.

Former LB Kaleb Ringer: Ringer made 5 tackles for Georgia State, but they lost to Air Force, 48-14.

Former head coach Rich Rodriguez: After losing to BYU in the opener, Arizona had an unimpressive 31-21 victory over Grambling this past weekend. In their defense, they were without starting quarterback Anu Solomon and instead went with sophomore Brandon Dawkins, who ran for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns but barely completed 50% of his passes.

Former DE commit Darian Roseboro: Roseboro made 4 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 1 quarterback hurry for North Carolina State, but they suffered a 33-30 loss to East Carolina.

Former RB commit Mike Weber: Weber carried the ball 17 times for 92 yards and 1 touchdown, along with 1 catch for 0 yards, in a 48-3 Ohio State blowout of Tulsa.

My son checked with his buddy at Western on whether Matt Falcon is practicing.
    The answer was “Soon.”
    So, there’s that.

    “Former DE commit Pharaoh Brown”

Wasn’t he a TE commit? Or was he originally a DE who moved to an offensive role?

He originally committed to Michigan as a DE. Playing offense was one of the reasons he ended up flipping to Oregon.

Derrick Green is averaging more YPC (5.6) at TCU than any M back besides Chris Evans*. Obviously it’s early but M has played 2 tomato cans and TCU has gone up against two legit teams (Arkansas and SDSU), so there’s reason to expect it to continue.

I wonder if Brian Cook will blame this one on Fred Jackson too. Or credit the TCU ophthalmologist.

Green isn’t anything special (he’s still a 3rd string back) but he’s a solid college player. His improved stats at TCU are/were predictable. Add to the pile of anecdotal evidence that it was the OL, not “vision” or RB coaching, that is to blame for the struggles of Michigan backs since Molk and company left town.

*and Davis technically, though he has 2 carries total.

What? While I wish DG luck, let’s not get carried away:
Against South Dakota St he had 1 carry for 15 yards (think AppSt 2014), and then the other 4 carries resulted in 10 yards (think the rest of the time in Ann Arbor)
Against the Razorbacks he had another “huge gain” of 14yds; the other 4 carries went for a whopping 17 yards. There’s a reason the 5th year Senior is down on the depth chart, and getting 5 touches per game

        A couple things:
        1. Running backs break off runs in chunks. It’s not really a criticism that Green had runs of 15 and 14 yards, but then he had 8 carries for 27 yards outside of those. Naturally, if you take away the good plays from anyone, the remaining plays are either mediocre or poor. If you take away Chesson’s 39 yard catch against PSU, he only had 3 catches for 30 yards. Remove Jake Butt’s 44 yard catch against Maryland, and all he had was 3 catches for 17 yards. Even 3.5 yards/carry isn’t that bad if you know that the best runs have been excised.
        2. Green isn’t a fifth year senior; he was in the 2013 class and transferred after graduating in a wee bit over 3 years (after summer classes).

          1) I agree, but his stats were brought up as though to validate him as a good RB, which I don’t think there’s enough to go off of yet. In other words, I think if I were discounting a handful of plays, it’d be narrow minded. I’m pointing out two runs, neither of which were anything worth celebrating
          2) I stand corrected. Still, 3d on the TCU depth chart as a Senior isn’t exactly what Mr Green (or UM fans) expected when he was a 5 star back in 2013, but probably paints a more accurate picture of his abilities than the stat Lanknows used

cool feature, always interesting to see how ex-wolverines or former commits fare on the field.

shame for crawford, i feel for him. that dude was undersized and whatnot but still a very promising prospect. as harbaugh likes to say, hes a football player.

man itd be great to see roseboro on the michigan depth chart – maybe not the highest ceiling like mcdowell or that type of player but it was pretty obvious roseboro was a talented prospect and would carry it over to the next level.

playing the “what if” game never really helps but we still often do it anyway – its a shame michigan lost so many talented recruits during the transition year. theyll have some talented upperclassmen on roster in 2017 and beyond but there wont be many of them (given the smaller class sizes in 2014 and 2015). the 2016 and 2017 classes will include like 60 total prospects, and 60 fairly gifted ones at that – but it sure would be nice if theyd been able to hold onto a few more 2015 prospects to supplement the roster and add some more talented depth to help lead the 2 monster classes in 16 and 17.
roseboro is just 1 potential guy. but there were plenty of others. oh well.
brian cole obviously came in and had his shot but failed to take advantage of it – itd be nice to have an athletic 6’2″ safety with range and some experience in addition to kinnel and all the younger guys. thanks for including cole in this update – ill be interested to follow him and see where he ends up after year of jc ball

another note, though totally unrelated to the original topic or post – ive only seen portions of 2 osu games but theyve got some serious talent on that squad. obviously meyer has recruited well and hes got a great staff so theyll be talented like always – but many just assumed theyd be soft or down for a bit after losing so much talent to the pros. theyre loaded. very young and inexperienced but loaded. i think the current group of players has the potential to be even better than the guys they just lost, at least in the back 7. its only 2 games but they look incredibly quick and athletic in the back 7 – obviously they have mcmillion and conley and webb and guys thatve played but some of those 1st year players are stars in the making. lattimore, hooker, baker – those dudes are the real deal. lattimore and baker are 2 prospects i especially wanted michigan to sign (and certainly they tried, osu just had too much pull). and thyeve got more young depth with guys like arnette who might not see much time but still promising (another guy harbaugh really wanted to sign late in 15 class). theyre young on D (and all over) but theyve got serious talent on that depth chart and those dudes will be tough, particularly after a season of experience under their belts.
