Ex-Wolverine Updates: Week 9

November 3, 2015

Dallas Crawford (#25)

Former CB Blake Countess: Countess had 5 tackles, 1 pass breakup, and 1 interception in Auburn’s 27-19 loss to Ole Miss. That’s Countess’s first interception since the 2013 season.

Former CB commit Dallas Crawford: Crawford made 5 tackles and had 1 kickoff return for 1 yard in Miami’s 30-27 win over Duke. He was also a part of Miami’s kickoff return unit that used 8 laterals to score on the final play of the game. You can see him here fielding the kickoff to start it off, and then the former high school QB throws the final lateral across the field. Hit the jump for the video and the rest of the updates:

Former LB Antonio Kinard: Kinard made 1 tackle in Cincinnati’s 52-7 win over Central Florida.

Former LB commit Darrin Kirkland, Jr.: Kirkland made 6 tackles, 1 tackles for loss, 2 quarterback hurries, and 1 interception returned for 26 yards in Tennessee’s 52-21 win over Kentucky.

Former LB Kaleb Ringer: Ringer made 2 tackles in Georgia State’s 48-34 loss to Arkansas State.

Former head coach Rich Rodriguez: Rodriguez and his Arizona Wildcats got lambasted by Washington, 49-3. That’s Arizona’s lowest point total since they were blanked by Oregon in 2012, and Washington is a mediocre 4-4 team. Arizona started off the scoring with a field goal, and they had the same number of first downs as Washington (22), but the Wildcats threw 3 interceptions and lost 1 fumble.

Former DE commit Darian Roseboro: Roseboro made 2 tackles in North Carolina State’s 56-41 loss to Clemson.

Arizona’s schedule going forward is: @USC, home for Utah, and @ASU.

I think at best they win one of those. They finish 6 – 6.

I suspect Rodriguez is looking closely at opportunities elsewhere. There’s a good chance — not certain, but good — that he bolts after this season.

Worst year of Rodriguez’s career I think. Not totally a surprise to see Arizona slide back a bit, but some of these performances are downright embarrassing. At WVU, he was obviously great. At Michigan, the team improved every year. This kind of backslide is unprecedented for him.

I wonder if there is anything to the conjecture about him moving jobs. It makes some sense, but I imagine he himself is focused on the season. If he only gets to 500, how is he going to get a job better than Arizona?

Well, his first year at Michigan (3-9) is his worst.

The argument for his getting a better job is, I think, that the Arizona job is not itself all that great, and that there’s a limit to what that program can achieve. So assuming he is offered and lands Miami or VT, it’s based on an expectation that given the right talent pool available to him, he can achieve more.

I guess … it leaves unexplained why some of the losses this year were so bad. There’s not many good ways to explain losing to Washington 49-3. Some claim injuries have been a factor. Scooby Wright’s injury might explain some of the lack of defense. But it doesn’t explain why that offense could generate only 3 against Washington. 4 turnovers doesn’t help, but good teams aren’t supposed to turn the ball over.

I’ve lived in Tucson 10 years now, and this is one of the *least* vibrant fan based I’ve seen. I can easily see why Rodriguez might want to go to someplace where there’s greater upside. Miami is a dumpster fire, though … high reward but high risk. VT is an enigma to me … following 29-year Beamer? It’s pretty isolated. It’s like a half-step up from WVU.

Disagree. That was a reboot/rebuild year with a walk-on QB. It was rough, but justifiable. This is different.

People have this idea that programs are entrenched where they are, and OK, if you’re San Jose Sate maybe that is somewhat true, but there are the examples of Oregon, and Boise State, and Stanford, Northwestern. Things change. Even Miami was nothing until Schnellenburger and Johnson made it something.

It’s not easy, but if a guy can turn WVU into a powerhouse for a few years, there’s no reason he can’t do it at Arizona.

There’s zero reason for VT to have more talent than Arizona. Zero. Miami has a tradition and is in Florida, so OK I get that, but VTech?

I guess my point is there’s no excuse for Rodriguez at Arizona. If he doesn’t succeed there it’s on him.

If we look at just the objective record, then 1990 at Glenville was his worst: 1 – 7 – 1. He was 3 – 8 in his first year (2001) at WVU.

What I offered above is just my speculation as to what may be the argument for why be a valued coaching candidate after a 6-6 year at UofA following a 10-2 year. I’m not saying that’s my argument … just an argument.

Agree on VT … I don’t see the differential there. Miami, yes; but it’s a dumpster fire and he’d as likely get swallowed up in at succeed at it.

For the record, I’m not a big fan of Rodriguez. I don’t think he’s a top coaching candidate nowadays. I think he was ahead of his time at WVU, but times have caught up with and passed him. Today’s defenses, if decent, can stop his offense, as we’ve seen. But that’s my opinion and I don’t expect others to necessarily agree.

            Even though I’m 100% right. 🙂

I always enjoy this post, but I think it would be a lot better if it was divided more clearly between former commits and former players. I don’t feel much attachment to a guy like Roseboro or Clark who is a ‘wolverine’ for a matter of weeks. Some commits never even set foot on campus.

I don’t think Kirkland Jr ever played or even signed with Michigan.

That’s a pretty good idea about organization. I’ll try to remember to change it up next week.

You’re right about Kirkland – that should say “former LB commit.”
