    I’d start Isaac.

    Clark’s pick was better.

I tried to post this to the forum, but apparently it didn’t work…

Ty Isaac is getting better blocking than DeVeon Smith, by a significant margin so far this year. 61% to 43% of plays are well blocked according to the following stat:

Opportunity Rate: “This is the percentage of carries in which the offensive line “does its job” and produces at least five yards of rushing for the runner. (Generally speaking, the first five yards are considered the line’s responsibility, the next five are split evenly between the runner and the line, and anything over 10 yards is all on the runner.) See Highlight Yards and Adj. Line Yards for more information.”

There’s a couple things this could be attributed to. 1. The OL really likes Isaac a lot more and is sabotaging Smith. 2. Sample size. (i.e., this will even out as the season progresses). 3. Play calling – Smith is getting tougher play calls in tougher situations. 4. Opponents – Smith got most of his carries against better teams, while Isaac got most of his carries against UNLV.

I would guess it’s a combination of 2-4, though maybe the OLmen aren’t big fans of blond highlights…

Anyway, the data backs up my assertion that there are circumstantial reasons for the disparity in YPC between the two backs.
