Jim Harbaugh says Wilton Speight could still return to Michigan (LINK). That would be . . . weird.
For opponents of the grad transfer rules, who think this is too much like free agency, Speight’s situation is about as free agency-y as it can be. From an outsider’s standpoint, it appears Speight is waiting to see if Shea Patterson is ruled eligible for 2018; if he’s ruled ineligible, only then would Speight consider a return to Ann Arbor. Otherwise, he’ll wait to see how the other jobs shake out before making a decision. It’s like Jay Cutler waiting for a Ryan Tannehill situation.

“it appears Speight is waiting to see if Shea Patterson is ruled eligible for 2018”
Not accurate, per insider reports and uhhh… other things.
Harbaugh’s brought this up in public twice now, but Speight’s laughed off a return to Michigan football. Harbaugh never wanted him to leave and would love to have him back. That’s clear from comments from them both. This is a way for JH to reach out and let him know the door is open. At a minimum it’s Harbaugh hedging his bets.
Supposedly Speight still isn’t interested, even if the transfer market is much cooler than he expected. He’s proven he’s not afraid to compete. As I and others have outline before, it’s probably not really about the other QBs on the roster.

He not afraid, but certainly it’s certainly about the QBs on the roster

Speight already beat out every eligible player on the roster. I don’t think Joe Milton is scaring him.

I just agreed he’s not afraid. I’m assuming he believes he earned the job, and didn’t want to spilt reps. That has a ton to do with competition, no matter how you feel about WS3

I’m not talking about insiders. I’m talking about national observers looking at this from an outside perspective.

Wasn’t clear you meant national media.
