MLive: Harbaugh not ready to name backup QB vs. Rutgers

November 5, 2018

Jim Harbaugh isn’t ready to name a backup QB moving forward (LINK). The staff wants to preserve Joe Milton’s redshirt. Milton has played in one game and can play in up to four games without sacrificing his redshirt. With three regular season games left, plus a potential Big Ten championship game, plus a potential playoff game, plus a potential national championship game, there are a lot of games left. That’s up to six remaining games and Milton can only play in three. It would make the most sense to make Brandon Peters the #2 for Rutgers and Indiana, even if Milton has moved ahead of him.

Hit the jump for some good looking ladies.

The important thing is that the backup is ready if needed, when it counts.

If Milton’s really the number 2 – he should play against Rutgers and/or Indiana. So that he is as prepared as possible for meaningful snaps – if the situation arises. You don’t want to just throw a freshman out there who has never attempted a pass.

The backup probably won’t be needed against OSU and title/playoff games. So you can probably get Milton ready (vs Rutgers/Indiana) and expect that he probably won’t play again. IF he’s actually called into duty in a title or playoff game, you live with that decision.

I tend to agree with this. If Michigan has a plausible shot at getting into the playoffs (and they do), then they should be as well-prepared for it as possible. That means having a backup QB ready to go. If the championship game is on the line and Patterson goes down, you have to come back with the best possible second choice for QB.
