I don’t have the animus for McElwain that seemingly they have over at the other site, but I would have as my second choice, preferred a young, stud recruiter with about any background, but preferably something we don’t do, like Air Raid or something like it. I want them running precise routes, catching the football and blocking. Then go recruit.

I think McElwain can coach the first three items from somewhere between fine and extremely well. I’d have preferred seeing a guy with a lot left in the tank humping Michigan football to teenagers somewhere, Don’t really care where.

I think mgoblog said it was a “missed opportunity” and I think that’s a good way of looking at it. McElwain is well qualified for the job but it does not seem like an addition that will put M ahead of it’s competitors. On top of retaining Drevno/Hamilton it seems quite uninspired.

It’s not like the O was anything amazing in 2016 or 2015. A lot of the same issues were there, but with way more experienced personnel on offense. The 2016 vs 2017 Indiana games were pretty much the same thing.

Helping guys run better routes or designing better routes then fine. Great.

It’s like worrying about the kitchen light not turning on when the toilet bowl is leaking. Priorities. I don’t have a problem with the hire but as long as the focus is on the OL and qb development. Get these two issues resolved and the sky is the limit.

I think the hire is decent, assuming McElwain becomes the primary play-caller (with JH of course keeping his veto power). Watching Drevno stare at his play sheet all game while his OL flailed was too much last season. Would have loved to see Drev and Pep get groomed this winter, but the next best thing would be to have them focused more on positional coaching and let a more accomplished OC take the lead. I’m assuming it works out that way, but who knows. JH will probably maintain the “we all call plays” mantra through spring practice.

…. get broomed, not groomed! Spell check.
