MLive: Phil Steele says Michigan is top 10 and a Big Ten contender

June 26, 2018

Phil Steele says Michigan is a top ten team (LINK). I’m not sure if I buy that, considering their tough schedule.

Hit the jump for some lovely ladies.

If Harbaugh can’t be at least a contender with the talent he has now, then when? Elite coaches don’t only contend when their schedule is easy. They don’t only contend every 5 or 6 years when all the factors align in their favor.

WCB I understand your argument (and actually agree), but we cannot dismiss OT/OL concerns, a new QB and this brutal schedule from making it as a top 10 contender.

It may take some time for the QB and receivers to get their timing down and for Warinner to get the pass/run blocking back to respectable. I think we will have a better and improved team.

Lets see if we show up prepared and fired up against ND, MSU and OSU; if not we should be pissed. Again.

But then next year, we’ll have too many key losses on defense, and it’ll take another year to get the new guys up to speed, so we can’t expect to contend in 2019, either. And in 2020, it’ll be a really hard schedule again, and we’ll have lost our best receivers with no good replacements, so we’ll have to wait until 2021. And so on.

Lots of teams contend even though they go into a season with question marks at one position. Time for Harbaugh to get over the hump of 9-3ism and really exceed expectations.

He’s already been over that hump. Michigan was 10-2, 10-2, and 8-4 in the regular season over the past three years.

As for too many losses on defense, I don’t know if that’s going to be a thing. Defense hasn’t been the issue. Michigan lost a bunch of people from the 2016 team (Charlton, Lewis, Hill, Thomas, Wormley, etc.) and didn’t lose a step in 2017.

OL is a legitimate issue. Michigan needs better OL performance before they can contend. Maybe it comes this year with Ed Warinner, maybe not.

Every single person reading this knows that’s not true. Harbaugh was 9-3 in the regular season his first year.

So, 9-3, 10-2, 8-4. Dead on 9-3ism. Good to very good, never great, except maybe once a decade when all the luck goes your way. Time to start getting beyond that.
