    thunder
Any thoughts on the class? I imagine you might post a recruiting update soon, but I thought I would ask anyway.

I am not as upset with this class as some, but what makes it worse is our top targets going to to OSU and other places. It just seemed like M was never in it for a lot of the big names. Not to take anything away from these kids but I am shocked no big time DT came her with Mattison and his resume. Plus with immediate PT at Tackle I don’t understand whiffing o Patterson and NPT. Negative recruiting?

I do like the numbers game Harbaugh is playing. Without oversigning he is getting as many “chances” as he can. Signed 77 kids in last 3 classes. Probably 15 – 18 next year. Hopefully he can uncover a few diamonds in the rough.

Finally on a side note. A boy my son played little league with and whose brother I coached in Basketball just signed as a PWO for M. Owen Goldsberry out of IL. Great kid and super family. He is only 6 feet and about 200lbs. Played QB and safety in HS. My guess is they want him at Safety if he can beef up. Always fun to see a kid you know do well. He chose a PWO over a PWO from Iowa. I do believe Army was looking at him too.

It’s not a great class, but when you literally finish the week of National Signing Day/NSD itself with 0 new additions and the loss of your top recruit, it leaves a very sour taste in your mouth. Maybe people will forget about it in 6 months when there’s a new scandal and a new football season on the horizon, but right now, it’s a pretty embarrassing situation for Michigan. There’s been no positive news since the end of the year, except the fact that Chase Winovich is returning. I guess it’s nice to get a couple 3-star additions like Vincent Gray and Michael Barrett, but those don’t move the scales a whole lot.

Michigan is really struggling to identify tackles right now. Part of it is a lack of talent identification, and part of it is a lack of a consistent scheme. They brought in Greg Frey, an excellent tackles coach, and they didn’t utilize him or his expertise. Michigan needs to find some diamonds in the rough, bulk them up, and turn them into competent tackles. Otherwise, I don’t see the good to great OT prospects coming to Michigan when they have the option to play at Ohio State and Notre Dame, schools that have proven they can turn you into a high draft pick. The Wolverines have produced zilch on the offensive line since they have been here, and Mason Cole isn’t going to be a big name in the draft, either. He was “just a guy” at the Senior Bowl.

Thanks for the info on Goldsberry. I’ll update the PWO list soon.

        Thanks for your comments.
        Sums it up pretty well.
By no means is Harbaugh on hot seat, nor should he be. But he needs to step it up. 9 – 3 with their schedule would actually be a good result, but in reality he needs to do better to turn the tide. I don’t think winning in South Bend or East Lansing will be easy, but they are doable with a qb. M will be a underdog in Columbus and probably by a lot. They are a machine right now on par with Alabama. 10 -2 with a victory in Cbus would help, but 11 – 1 would definitely stop the bleeding.

I am really puzzled over Thunder’s comment that Michigan has failed to identify tackles (and QB for that matter) right now. How much of this is luck and small sample size? Afterall, tackle is notoriously one of the hardest position to scout. Harbaugh and Drevno have been at this for a really long time. I find it really hard to believe that these two guys are unable to identify offensive talent overnight.

If Grant Newsome did not have that gruesome injury, would we be singing a different tune right now?

If Newsome hadn’t gotten hurt, we might have one quality OT on the roster now, instead of none. At this level, with what Harbaugh and his staff are being paid, that would still be a huge fail. Even teams with a much lower recruiting profile than ours are consistently signing, developing and fielding more capable offensive tackles than we are. It’s not luck.

I’m not saying they can’t do it. I’m saying they’ve whiffed so far at Michigan. Grant Newsome and Mason Cole were both Brady Hoke recruits, and so was Erik Magnuson at RT.

We’ll see how things play out during their careers, but Erik Swenson went to Oklahoma, not some MAC school. If he ends up being okay down the road, that’s a ding on Harbaugh’s account. Devery Hamilton appears to be on his way to being a pretty good tackle. We lost out on Isaiah Wilson late in the process. We did get Chuck Filiaga, but Filiaga’s not a left tackle type – he’s a RT or a guard. There are some other guys with potential, but it’s odd that Michigan hasn’t widened the net more. You can move failed tackles inside, but you can’t move failed guards to the outside.

Thunder, how much of Michigan’s struggle at the offensive line is due to the complexity of a pro-offense that Harbaugh runs (as supposed to a spread offense)? I read that it is much harder for an offensive line to master a pro-style offense compared to a spread offense. How true is that?
