Recruiting Update: January 11, 2016

January 11, 2016

Egg Harbor City (NJ) Cedar Creek RB Bo Melton

COMMITMENT
Rancho Santa Margarita (CA) Catholic wide receiver Dylan Crawford committed to Michigan at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2016
Paintsville (KY) Paintsville linebacker Kash Daniel, a Kentucky commit, was offered by Michigan. Daniel is a 6’1″, 227 lb. prospect who’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #14 inside linebacker, and #400 overall. Daniel played in the Army All-American Bowl. He committed to Kentucky on this past Fourth of July, and as an early enrollee, he said he’s solid with the Wildcats.

Sachse (TX) Sachse cornerback Jared Mayden decommitted from Oregon. Mayden is a 6’1″, 190 lb. prospect who is heavily considering Florida State and LSU at this point. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #10 cornerback, and #128 overall. Mayden committed to Oregon in July and took an official visit to Michigan in September, but it does not appear the Wolverines are an option at this point. He played in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl last week.

Hit the jump for another 2016 player added to the board, some new 2017 offers, some guys who committed elsewhere, and some random bits.

Chesapeake (VA) Indian River linebacker Jaquan Yulee decommitted from Alabama. Yulee is a 6’0″, 252 lb. prospect who also has offers from Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #9 inside linebacker, and #171 overall. Yulee was high on Michigan early in the process and made noise about wanting to visit, but then his commitment to Alabama came a little out of the blue. It’s rumored that grade issues may be a factor in his decommitment, so that would rule out Michigan as a destination, too.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017
Sacramento (CA) Inderkum tight end Josh Falo was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 215 lb. prospect with offers from Cal, Nebraska, and Oregon, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #18 athlete, and #183 overall. Falo is a very raw player, but he has good athleticism and runs like a wide receiver. He could end up as a tight end, outside linebacker, or a weakside end at the next level. Oregon is in a strong position as of now.

Richmond (TX) Travis offensive guard Will Farrar was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 299 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona State, Miami, Texas Tech, and Utah, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #9 offensive guard, and #324 overall. He is a powerful drive blocker who has the build of a guard, but he has the feet to maybe play right tackle, too.

Columbia (MO) Battle wide receiver Jaevon McQuitty was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’2″, 193 lb. prospect with offers from Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, and Nebraska. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #51 wide receiver, and #341 overall. As a junior in 2015, he caught 58 passes for 1,077 yards and 12 touchdowns. McQuitty is a good-sized wideout who has some solid straight-line speed, though not a lot of shiftiness.

Egg Harbor City (NJ) Cedar Creek running back Bo Melton was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’0″, 180 lb. prospect with offers from Boston College and Rutgers, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #28 running back, and #366 overall. Melton was a teammate of early enrollee wide receiver Ahmir Mitchell. A jack of all trades on offense – playing running back, slot receiver, and wildcat quarterback – Melton gained 1,723 all-purpose yards and scored 27 touchdowns, outshining Mitchell in the process. Melton is pretty slight for a running back, and though he has some power, he may be best suited for a slot receiver position.

Powder Springs (GA) McEachern wide receiver Tyler Smith was offered by Michigan. He’s a 5’11”, 185 lb. prospect who committed to North Carolina in November 2015; he also has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Miami, and Tennessee, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #28 wide receiver, and #211 overall. Michigan offered him back in May, and somehow I missed it. Since he committed to UNC in the meantime, I don’t think Michigan will be much of a factor.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2019
Norcross (GA) Greater Atlanta Christian defensive end Chris Hinton, Jr. was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 247 lb. prospect who’s the son of former Northwestern and NFL offensive tackle Chris Hinton. He’s a teammate of 2017 quarterback Davis Mills.

OFF THE BOARD
Detroit (MI) King wide receiver Donnie Corley committed to Michigan State at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Corley had a top group of Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Tennessee, but the Wolverines probably finished at least third out of that group. This is probably an example of Michigan’s delay in offering giving other teams time to swoop in and take too much momentum to overcome. Corley is a teammate of 2016 cornerback Lavert Hill, who is also considering MSU.

Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy tight end Isaac Nauta committed to Georgia at the U.S. Army AA Bowl. Nauta, the #1 tight end in the country, reportedly went back and forth between Georgia and Michigan in the week leading up to his decision. But he always expressed an interest in staying close to home, and the Buford, Georgia, product (he transferred to IMG after his junior year) did just that. He also has family in Michigan, so combined with Jim Harbaugh’s use of tight ends, it was a difficult choice.

Springhill (LA) North Webster linebacker Devin White committed to LSU. White was talked about as a possible two-way player at Michigan, someone who could be a fullback and linebacker. However, the Wolverines were left out of his top group a couple months ago, and this was the expected outcome all along. He’s the #5 athlete and #94 prospect overall in the 2016 class.

MISCELLANEOUS
Here’s a list of visitors coming to Ann Arbor next weekend (LINK). That list includes Nixa (MO) Nixa tight end Chase Allen, who has picked up a couple Crystal Ball picks for Michigan recently, and the Wolverines now sit at 92%. With Isaac Nauta committing to Georgia, there’s a good chance that Allen joins the class.

I posted my thoughts on the Army Bowl (LINK). Here’s a list of players who participated in the Army Bowl (LINK).

Detroit (MI) King cornerback Lavert Hill was named the Army National Defensive Back of the Year. This is quite an honor, considering the other talents up for the award. The former Penn State commit did not stand out in the Army Bowl, but Michigan does have a good chance of reeling him in over the next few weeks, despite his pending visits to other schools.

Los Angeles (CA) Loyola cornerback David Long, Jr. is visiting Washington next weekend, getting an in-home visit from Jim Harbaugh a few days later, and then making his college choice on January 20th before leaving for an overseas trip.

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones named Michigan to his top ten. The rest of the list include Alabama, Florida, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and USC.
