Again, not impressed at all with Harbaugh’s recruiting. OSU already has five guys on that list, and we have none. Just projects and guys people comfort themselves by calling “under the radar” or “diamond in the rough” or “great upside”. Well, how about a few totally on the radar, wanted by everyone guys? How about some cut, polished and ready to wear diamonds for a change?

How long is it going to be before he starts closing the gap on the Buckeyes? 2018? 2019? He may not even be here that long.

I don’t think this is a “Jim Harbaugh” issue, it’s a Michigan issue. I know you haven’t been living under a rock since 2006, but I’ll remind you that while Michigan has gone 64-49 with zero Big Ten titles, OSU has gone 99-19 with 5 Big Ten titles, 7 BCS appearances, an undefeated season, and a national championship. Michigan hasn’t developed players consistently at any particular position in years. OSU has spent most of the last who-knows years ranked in the top 5, has a coach with 3 natty’s to his name, and an absolute machine of a football program. Michigan has a quirky-cute college town and a “nice-guy” program culture (though Harbaugh is changing that).

Since I only started following Michigan in 2004 when I became a freshman, I’ll ask: has Michigan ever really out-recruited Ohio State? I don’t expect Michigan to recruit like the SEC or OSU until it actually wins something.

Ohio State, with very few exceptions, has had higher rated talent from the top of the roster to the bottom than we have. This goes back to Bump if not farther.

Bo and Mo put large dents in the Buckeyes Ohio recruiting from time to time, but on average, OSU has been able to get the Ohio kids it wanted. We have from time to time, for long periods of time, held coaching advantages wherein we have run systems that gave other people fits and developed players to a higher level of play than we have recently. This has particularly been true on our offensive and defensive lines. Bo was a line coach and I’ve said many times that Jerry Hanlon might be the only guy in Michigan football history who has yet to be adequately replaced.

We also for all practical purposes owned the PSL which was a significantly better league when the city of Detroit had 1.5 or so people than it is at half that. The other thing to remember is that the Big 2 and Little 8 thing can no longer happen since the total scholarships have been reduced to 85 from unlimited in the 60s to 105 in the 70’s. Woody probably went three deep better than most starters in the Big 10. We had years where we were probably two deep better than everybody else.

We are bringing in good football players. We are always going to get ours and a little more. Better yet, we’re back to getting kids strong and coached up again. And in the final analysis, there’s not a damn thing we can do about it one way or the other beyond supporting the school and football program to the extent we are able while having fun.

Ignore Whineycityblue and coachernie. They’re both on a simple mission to be unhappy.

Michigan outrecruited OSU in the 90s and into the early aughts.

OSU will always win in talent-rich Ohio, but if Michigan can land a handful of key guys (maybe 20-25% of mutually offered elite talent) and make up the difference nationally and in-state (keeping 90% of elite recruits home or at least not at OSU), then we’re where we want to be.

The other day, you were talking about how nothing matters until players sign the Letter of Intent. And now you’re fretting about kids who won’t sign their NLI until February of 2017, which is 14 months away. Like I said the other day, you’re manufacturing reasons to be unimpressed.

Come on, are you just being deliberately obtuse here? I stand by my statement that nothing is CERTAIN until players actually sign (and sometimes not even then), but do you not see it as obvious these guys are far, far more LIKELY to sign with OSU than with us?

OSU is already far ahead of us in recruiting for 2017, and we’re talking about guys that are going to be the core of the teams in 2019-2021. So when exactly CAN we expect to start closing that gap?

I don’t really know what your first and second questions mean. But regardless, nobody has signed anything for 2016 except early enrollees. OSU is ahead of us for 2017 with verbal commitments, but there are 14 months to go. Guys could decommit from OSU. Guys could commit to Michigan. For example, Isaiah Wilson – who is high on this list – has already named Michigan his leader.

OSU isn’t that far ahead of us in 2017 as you claim. There’s a good chance 2 of the guys they’ve ‘landed’ so far are going to flip to somewhere else. Worrying about rankings this early in the class is pretty extreme.

Stop insisting that we have to ‘close the gap’. We probably won’t. We might, but it’s probably going to have to come AFTER closing the gap on the field [i.e., winning The (damn) Game]

I think, buried in your negative takes, there is a valid point – that Harbaugh’s recruiting has been underwhelming. There are a lot of people who will celebrate ANY commitment and a lot of people who acted like ‘unearthing’ prospects in the summer recruiting tour was a major coup. Those people are misguided, IMO. BUT… you do have to balance the “starz matter” with Harbaugh’s proven ability to find 3-star caliber talent and turn them into NFL players at Stanford. He should have earned your trust.

Even if he didn’t, you have to acknowledge that the Stanford/Harbaugh SYSTEM is a bit of an outlier and utilizes talent a little differently than conventional programs (even pro-style ones). At least on offense. So, if Harbaugh wants to take a 3-star RB, TE, FB, or OLmen…I’m going to go ahead and give him benefit of the doubt there. Baldwin, Fleener, DeCastro, Martin, Ertz — all these guys were 2 or 3 stars and ended up in the NFL. Taysom Hill was a 3-star and he, injury issues aside, is more like a 5-star talent.

So, a guy like Kingston Davis may not wow you but he’s probably a great fit as a Toby Gerhart type of power back.

Just to put some detail to this….Other than the secondary, are there any positions that you are really worried about, recruiting-wise.

LOL. He’ll be here, but he won’t “close the gap” vs. OSU, even if Michigan wins on the field.
