Upper Marlboro (MD) Riverdale Baptist cornerback Sir Patrick Scott decommitted from Michigan on Wednesday. He originally committed to the Wolverines in August (LINK). He had attended the Sound Mind Sound Body camp, as well as Michigan’s summer camp, before Michigan offered. This decommitment had been somewhat expected for a while after Scott mentioned that he had not had much contact with Michigan’s coaching staff. He also had not taken or even scheduled an official visit to Ann Arbor.

As you can see from my original commitment post, I had given Scott a TTB Rating of 68. I was not impressed with his athleticism or playmaking skills, which accounted for the low-ish grade. He also did not have a very productive senior season, although he reportedly did a good job of stopping opposing wide receivers. Other reported offers at the time of his commitment came from Arizona, Kentucky, Michigan State, Pitt, and Wisconsin, among others. He’s currently a 247 Composite 3-star, the #56 cornerback, and #678 overall.

Hit the jump for more on cornerback recruiting.

As for Michigan’s cornerback recruiting situation, the Wolverines have just one commitment in the 2016 class, which is Delray Beach (FL) Atlantic’s Antwaine Richardson. Richardson is expected to arrive on campus in June. Otherwise, Michigan is high on the lists of Los Angeles (CA) Loyola’s David Long, Jr. and Detroit (MI) King’s Lavert Hill, not to mention Old Tappan (NJ) Old Tappan athlete Jordan Fuller and Miami (FL) Miami athlete Keyshawn “Pie” Young. Fuller is being recruited as a defensive back, while Young could play wide receiver or corner. There’s also a chance that a player like Chris Evans, currently committed as a running back/slot receiver, could end up at corner. From a talent standpoint, this could be a very good trade for Michigan if they end up getting any of the players listed above.

There are now 23 commitments in the 2016 class, and there are expected to be approximately 27 when all is said and done. Michigan now has 90 scholarships accounted for (LINK), so further attrition will have to take place to get down to the limit of 85.

If this is in fact because of his grades, fine If this is pursuing other options at the position, should’ve given kid more time than 3 weeks to go through the recruitment process again.

Either way, best of luck to the kid.

Maybe he’s just taking the high road, but his de-commitment post doesn’t make it seem like he was treated unfairly:

“I would like to thank Coach Harbaugh and the entire staff at Michigan for recruiting me. I wish them and the entire program nothing but the best in the future.”

The rumors are that he was having trouble academically. The fact that he hasn’t taken any official visits (which do require a certain academic threshold) is a bit of a red flag. So it’s tough to blame the coaching staff when you’re (allegedly) not getting it done in the classroom.

What’s the chances that Richardson grey shirts on the slim chance that we are able to get 2-3 of these players. Would they rather he rehab his ACL with them, or have the scholarship filled by someone with the potential to contribute this year. I know in the past it wouldn’t be much of a question, but Harbaugh seems like he is going to do whatever it takes to field the best team possible for better or worse. I’m not meaning this as an over reaction to one decommitment where the definite reason hasn’t been given, but more as a feeling of where the program is headed. Love Hoke or hate him (I really liked him), he was loyal to staff and players almost to a fault. In today’s age, you can’t do that, and have to take every advantage available. Harbaugh is the type that will take everything he can get within the rules.

I do not believe Richardson will be a greyshirt. I think they want him on full scholarship from the beginning.

Any suggestions as to who possible grey shirts will be. Over on mgoblog there is a big discussion that the class may go up to 30 recruits, which seems to mean at least 2 grey shirts due to the B1G10 cap of 28. Unless of course the 30 is taking transfers into consideration.

My point still stands though that the days of playing nice are over. Harbaugh will not be like Hoke as far as recruiting is concerned, and UM is headed more towards the SEC style minus the bagman (hopefully) and Jr college transfers.

Most of the rumors I have heard concerning greyshirts are about Josh Metellus and Quinn Nordin.

As long as recruits are told up front what the plan is then I have no problem with grey shirting. If a spot opens up for the along the way great for them. I had read before that the 2 that you had mentioned were candidates to GS, but with how fluid recruiting is I didn’t know if that was still the case for them.

Nordin makes a lot of since. Doesn’t waste a year behind K Allen, and puts another year between him and A David.

J Metellus is likely the only safety (with Gil likely playing LB) in the class unless one of the WR’s or RB’s end up there, and I know there has been speculation of that happening. Metellus seemed to be one of those recruits that was offered to set up a pipeline into a good school in FL and make it more likely to get Bush.

Rumors have been going around about K Enis, D Johnson, and R Weaver. Have you heard much more about them or do you expect them to end up in the class?
