2018 Season Countdown: #92 Andrew Robinson

Andrew Robinson

Name: Andrew Robinson
Height: 6’0″
Weight: 221 lbs.
High school: Troy (MI) Athens
Position: Long snapper
Class: Fifth year senior
Jersey number: #49
Last year: I ranked Robinson #32 and said he would be the starting long snapper (LINK). He snapped for punts, field goals, and PATs in two games.

Your guess is as good as mine when it comes to long snappers. Scott Sypniewski got hurt two years ago, and Robinson stepped in flawlessly. I expected him to be the starter in 2017, and Camaron Cheeseman took those duties. Robinson stepped in for a couple games and once again did a good job, but Cheeseman returns in 2018. I assume Cheeseman will keep the starting job as the incumbent, but who knows? At least Michigan appears to have at least two good options at long snapper, since both of them have played significant time without more than a slight hiccup.

Prediction: Backup long snapper

A funny thing happened over the past year with Michigan’s long snapper position. Maybe it starts with the 2015 Michigan State game, in which a bad punt snap and then a poor decision by the punter led to a loss against the Spartans. But long snapper Scott Sypniewski never seemed to recover the full trust of Michigan’s coaching staff. Robinson played against Hawaii and Rutgers, and some people suggested he was snapping better than Sypniewski in practice. That may be what led Michigan to part ways with Sypniewski, who transferred to Vanderbilt this off-season.

Robinson steps up into the void vacated by Sypniewski. As the backup last year, he’s expected to be the man this year. It shouldn’t be lost that he’s arguably the #2 guy who could be on Michigan’s roster right now, and the actual backup might be the #3 guy. The hope is that the casual fan won’t hear (or at least remember) Robinson’s name, but he’ll be an important piece of the 2017 football team. In limited experience so far, he’s done a good job.

Prediction: Starting long snapper

I believe this is the first time I’ve included a backup long snapper in a countdown, though I have included a long snapper and short snapper in previous countdowns. Anyway, last year Scott Sypniewski was the full-time snapper until his thumb was hurt on the most devastating play of the 2015 season. He had snapping issues after that, and Robinson stepped in for one game against Penn State to let Sypniewski heal. You may not have noticed that the backup long snapper was playing, which means Robinson did a solid job. Rivals threw out a rumor earlier this spring that Sypniewski might even be looking to transfer, but as of now, it looks like Robinson will be his backup.
