Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Channing Stribling

The USFL started its regular season this past weekend, and there are some noteworthy items for former Wolverines.

Former Michigan cornerback Channing Stribling, playing for the Philadelphia Stars, made 2 tackles, 1 interception (returned for 32 yards), and a league-leading 3 pass breakups in a 23-17 loss to the New Orleans Breakers.

OTHERS OF NOTE

  • QB Shea Patterson (Michigan Panthers): Patterson completed 17/25 passes (68.0%) for 192 yards, 1 touchdown, and 0 interceptions in a 17-12 loss. However, he was sacked 3 times and fumbled 2 times in his first game action since playing at Michigan in 2019; one of the fumbles was returned for a touchdown.

Video also came out where former Michigan running back De’Veon Smith was apparently cut from the Pittsburgh Maulers because he wanted pizza instead of chicken salad and did not respond in a satisfactory way to the person offering the food:

2022 Inaugural USFL Draft Results

The new version of the USFL kicked off its draft on Tuesday night, and the first pick was none other than former Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson. Altogether, the draft was full of names that you either didn’t know or were a blip for a bit on the college scene before disappearing, such as former Maryland cornerback/returner Will Likely, Ohio State WR Johnnie Dixon, and Memphis QB Paxton Lynch (who was a high draft pick by the Denver Broncos once upon a time).

The USFL did something unique with their draft: they used alternating orders each round, and each round was for one position only. So the first round was only quarterbacks, the second round was only defensive ends, etc. I think that’s a good way to start off the league, so every team gets at least a chance to grab the best player at one position. But because of that, the round in which a player was picked was irrelevant to an extent; for example, defensive tackles couldn’t even be drafted until the 24th round.

Round 7: OT Juwann Bushell-Beatty (Tampa Bay Bandits)

Former Michigan commit Mike Weber, who played his college football at Ohio State, was a 27th round pick by the New Jersey Generals.

Ranking Michigan’s Running Backs

I went through the process of ranking Michigan’s quarterbacks (LINK), which created a lot of debate. This has been in the works for a long time, but here’s a look at my ranking of running backs, going back to the beginning of the Lloyd Carr era.

To be considered for this list, a running back must have started at least ten games in a Michigan uniform*, which roughly equals one full season’s worth of starts with some wiggle room for being banged up a little bit.

*There are two exceptions to this for different reasons, which you’ll see in the post.

Review of 2013 TTB Ratings

I’ll just cut right to the chase and say that I did not do a good job with rating the class of 2013. A bunch of good recruits bombed, and in their absence, a bunch of so-so recruits starred. In some ways, it’s not that I whiffed on everyone. It’s that it was a huge boom-or-bust class.

Keep in mind that the ratings (fully explained here) are intended to project how players will fare at Michigan and, to a certain extent, in the NFL Draft. I do not take into account how players will do once they get to the NFL or how they will pan out if they transfer to other programs. I will give myself a grade of 1-5 like a 5-point grading scale (5 is best, 1 is worst) for each player; I reserve the right to give myself an incomplete if the guy never even got a chance to get on the field. I’ll work down the list from highest to lowest with a brief career recap for each player:

95: Derrick Green – RB – Richmond (VA) Hermitage
Green ran for just 898 yards and 7 touchdowns on 4.2 yards per carry during three years at Michigan. It didn’t help that his first two years were spent behind a Darrell Funk-coached offensive line, but he fell behind De’Veon Smith, transferred to TCU, and didn’t do anything there, either.
Prediction accuracy: 1. Big oops.
