Visitors: Michigan vs. Utah

Donnie Corley

2015
Deshawn Baker-Williams – DT – Westland (MI) John Glenn: Baker-Williams is a 6’4″, 300 lb. prospect who committed to Central Michigan in June. That was and is his only offer so far.

Brian Cole – WR – Saginaw (MI) Heritage: Cole recently was awarded his Under Armour All-American jersey (LINK), although he was suspended for Heritage’s most recent game after receiving two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties last game. He is committed to Michigan.

Jack Dunaway – DE – Bloomfield Hills (MI) Brother Rice: Dunaway, a teammate of Alex Malzone’s, is a 6’3″, 212 lb. prospect who recently committed to be a walk-on at Michigan. His father was a tight end at Michigan in the mid-1980’s.

Alex Malzone – QB – Bloomfield Hills (MI) Brother Rice: On Friday night, Malzone went 14/20 for 208 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 28-21 win over Shane Morris’s old team, the Warren (MI) De La Salle Pilots. He is committed to Michigan.

Jalen Martin – WR – Harper Woods (MI) Chandler Park Academy: Martin is a 6’1″, 192 lb. prospect with offers from Akron, Eastern Michigan, and Western Michigan. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #65 wide receiver, and #390 overall. He attends the alma mater of former Michigan wide receiver Csont’e York.

Jon Runyan, Jr. – OG – Philadelphia (PA) St. Joseph’s: Runyan, Jr. committed to Michigan in June 2013 (LINK).

Mike Weber – RB – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Weber sat out last night’s 50-0 win over Detroit (MI) Douglass. He is committed to Michigan.

Hit the jump for 2016, 2017, and 2018(!) visitors.

2016
Donnie Corley – WR – Detroit (MI) King: Corley is a 247 Composite 4-star who has recently picked up offers from Michigan State and Pitt. He transferred from Wyandotte to King in the off-season, and things have paid off nicely in the first few games.

Matt Falcon – RB – Southfield (MI) Southfield:
Falcon is a 6’1″, 215 lb. prospect with offers from Akron, Northern Illinois, Ohio State, Toledo, and Wake Forest. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #25 running back, and #274 overall. He missed last season with a torn ACL but was a teammate of Michigan freshman defensive end Lawrence Marshall.

Brendan Ferns – LB – St. Clairsville (OH) St. Clairsville: Ferns is a 6’3″, 223 lb. prospect with offers from Maryland, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Penn State, among others. He’s the younger brother of Michigan freshman linebacker Michael Ferns, but the Wolverines have not shown a ton of interest in Brendan yet. The feeling is that if the Wolverines offered now, they would still have a serious uphill battle for Brendan’s services.

Michael Jordan – OT – Plymouth (MI) Plymouth: Jordan is a 6’5″, 278 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan and Ohio State. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #36 offensive tackle, and #478 overall.

Kalebb Perry – WR – Mt. Pleasant (MI) Mt. Pleasant: Perry is a 6’2″, 180 lb. prospect with offers from Central Michigan and Western Michigan. He appears to be a notch below Corley, but he’s still a 247 Composite 3-star and the #87 wide receiver in his class.

Nik Urban – OG – Willoughby (OH) South: Urban is a 6’4″, 280 lb. prospect with offers from Duke and a few MAC schools. He camped at Michigan last summer. He might be a fine player, but his name is “Urban.” Ick.

2017
Johnathan Berghorst – DE – Zeeland (MI) East: Berghorst is a 6’2″, 215 lb. prospect with no offers at this point. He has visited Michigan several times and camped in Ann Arbor this past June.

Andre Jackson – CB – Bridgeport (MI) Bridgeport: Jackson is a 5’10”, 170 lb. prospect with no offers at this time.

Corey Malone-Hatcher – DE – St. Joseph (MI) St. Joseph: Hatcher is a 6’3″, 235 lb. prospect with an offer from Ohio State. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #3 weakside end, and #104 overall.

Bruce Mann – QB – Bay City (MI) Western: Mann is a 6’2″, 180 lb. prospect with no offers at this time. His father recently moved to the outskirts of Chicago to take on a new job, so it may be just a matter of time before the younger Mann becomes an out-of-state prospect.

Willie Rodgers – DE – Saginaw (MI) Arthur Hill: Rodgers is a 6’4″, 205 lb. prospect with no offers at this time.

2018
Jimmy Bell – OT – Saginaw (MI) Arthur Hill: Bell is a 6’7″, 310 lb. ninth grader. He has no offers at this time, but he is very large.

Tyree Jackson – QB – Muskegon (MI) Mona Shores: Jackson is committed to Buffalo (Recruiting Season).

Joeviair Kennedy – WR – Muskegon (MI) Muskegon: Kennedy is a 6’3″, 195 lb. prospect with no offers at this time.

Hit the jump for 2016 and 2017 prospects.

2016
Messiah DeWeaver – QB – Trotwood (OH) Trotwood-Madison: DeWeaver committed to Michigan this summer (LINK).

Matt Falcon – RB – Southfield (MI) Southfield: Falcon is a 6’1″, 215 lb. prospect with offers from Cincinnati, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Wake Forest, and a few MAC schools. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #25 running back, #275 overall, and #10 in-state. He was a teammate of Michigan freshman defensive end Lawrence Marshall last year, but Falcon suffered a torn ACL and missed almost the entire season.

Lavert Hill – CB – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Hill is a 5’11”, 165 lb. prospect with offers from Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #22 cornerback, #230 overall, and #6 in-state. His brother Delano is a sophomore safety for the Wolverines; Delano would probably be starting at strong safety if not for a broken jaw that is keeping him out temporarily.

Joshua Jackson – QB – Saline (MI) Saline: Jackson is the son of Michigan running backs coach Fred Jackson and the brother of former wide receiver Jeremy. Joshua transferred from Ann Arbor (MI) Huron to Saline for his junior year.

Michael Jordan – OT – Plymouth (MI) Plymouth: Jordan is a 6’7″, 278 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan and Ohio State. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #35 offensive tackle, #454 overall, and #15 in-state.

Khalid Kareem – DE – Farmington Hills (MI) Harrison: Kareem is a 6’4″, 225 lb. prospect with no offers at this time. He attends the alma mater of Michigan juniors Devin Funchess and Mario Ojemudia.

Michael Onwenu – DT – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Onwenu is a 6’2″, 310 lb. prospect with offers from Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, and others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #4 offensive guard, #190 overall, and #5 in-state. Michigan is recruiting him as a defensive tackle.

David Reese – LB – Farmington (MI) Farmington: Reese is a 6’1″, 235 lb. prospect with offers from a handful of MAC programs. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #16 inside linebacker, #503 overall, and #17 in-state.

2017
Kahlee “K.J.” Hamler – WR – Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s: Hamler is a 5’8″, 145 lb. prospect with offers from Cincinnati, Michigan State, and Toledo.

Donovan Peoples-Jones – WR – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Peoples-Jones is a 6’1″, 170 lb. prospect with offers from Miami and Ohio State. He’s a 247 Sports 4-star, the #2 wide receiver, and #12 overall.

Joshua Ross – LB – Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s: Ross is a 6’1″, 210 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Oklahoma. He’s a 247 Sports 4-star, the #2 inside linebacker, #51 overall, and #3 in-state. He’s the younger brother of Michigan junior linebacker James Ross III.

Recruiting Update: August 12, 2014

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Michael Weber

COMMITMENT
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Michael Weber committed to Michigan (LINK).

OFF THE BOARD
Princeton (NJ) Princeton running back Johnny Frasier committed to Florida State. Frasier had developed a solid relationship with area recruiter Roy Manning, but he was not expected to come to Michigan even before Weber’s commitment.

Brooksville (FL) Nature Coast offensive tackle Christian Pellage committed to South Carolina. He never gave Michigan serious consideration.

Philadelphia (PA) St. Joseph’s cornerback John Reid committed to Penn State. He’s a teammate of Michigan offensive guard commit Jon Runyan, Jr. Michigan had been named to Reid’s top group, but he never seemed particularly interested. Reid was a possible replacement of Shaun Crawford in the class, but the coaching staff will continue to look elsewhere, such as D.C.’s Marcus Lewis or North Carolinian Mook Reynolds.

Detroit (MI) King linebacker Tyriq Thompson committed to Michigan State. Thompson is the son of former Michigan safety Clarence Thompson, so this is a bit of a blow from a legacy perspective. However, I spent some time studying his game film and wrote up a scouting report in March (LINK), and I was not particularly high on Thompson’s game.

Sumter (SC) Crestwood running back Ty’Son Williams committed to North Carolina. He committed to the Tarheels before Weber committed to the Wolverines, but now that Weber has pledged, Michigan will probably not recruit another running back in the class.

Michael Weber, Wolverine

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Michael Weber committed to Michigan.

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Michael Weber committed to Michigan on Wednesday night. He chose the Wolverines over offers from Michigan State, Ohio State, USC, and Wisconsin, among others.

I wrote up a scouting report on Weber in March (LINK), and not much has changed since then; after all, it was based on his junior film. He is slated to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January.

RATINGS
ESPN: 4-star, 82 grade, #14 running back, #169 overall, #2 in-state
Rivals: 4-star, #10 running back, #105 overall, #1 in-state
Scout: 4-star, #13 running back, #104 overall
247 Sports: 4-star, 94 grade, #13 running back, #144 overall, #2 in-state

Weber was one of Michigan’s earliest offers in the 2015 class, but Kentuckian Damien Harris committed first. The presence of perhaps the nation’s top-ranked running back seemed to bother Weber, who lost some interest in Michigan and started to build relationships with the likes of Michigan State, Ohio State, USC, and Wisconsin. Then Al Borges was fired, Harris decommitted, and new offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier re-prioritized Weber this winter and spring. As you can tell by my comments on the March scouting report, I thought Michigan held a slight lead by that point. Despite touted teammate Joshua Alabi committing to Ohio State recently, Weber skipped a planned visit to Michigan State, drove to Ann Arbor with one of his coaches, and committed to Michigan on Wednesday evening.

Weber is a solid player who has been dominating the Detroit area (and the state) for the past three years. I mentioned in that scouting report that he reminds me of Emmitt Smith in the way he runs – not extremely fast, not extremely powerful, not extremely shifty, but he gets the job done efficiently. One other thing to note is that Weber reportedly caught the ball well at a recent camp, which strengthens the Smith comparison and adds another dimension to a well rounded game. I have noted in the past that if Michigan’s offensive line develops like it should with all these big-time recruits, any halfway decent running back should be very productive. I do not see Weber dominating the highlight reels in the future, but he should be a good running back for the Wolverines who has some potential for the NFL.

This gives Michigan ten commits in the 2015 class, which is currently scheduled to hit just 11 or so (LINK). He’s also the only running back (with Harris likely headed elsewhere), and Michigan will probably stand pat with just one back in this class unless something changes. The Wolverines have landed the top two in-state players (Weber, WR Brian Cole) and three of the top four (QB Alex Malzone is #4), according to the 247 Composite. Weber is another in a long line of Cass Tech players headed to Michigan, where he will join offensive lineman David Dawson, linebacker Royce Jenkins-Stone, cornerbacks Jourdan Lewis and Terry Richardson, and safety Delano Hill. Furthermore, his Wednesday night visit took place with Delano Hill’s younger brother, Lavert, a 2016 cornerback who also holds an offer from the Wolverines.

TTB Rating: 82 (ratings explanation)
