2020 Season Countdown: #55 Nolan Rumler

Last year: I ranked Rumler #85 and said he would redshirt (LINK). He redshirted.
TTB Rating: 87

Rumler came in as a guy who perhaps would have played in a lot of years. He was already 6’3″ and 310 lbs., and his feats of strength are pretty well documented. But with four senior offensive linemen who would eventually get drafted, Michigan didn’t need contributions from true freshmen up front. So Rumler got a year to percolate.

I expected Rumler to create more practice buzz than he did, but that hype belongs to Zach Carpenter and Karsen Barnhart. Carpenter is projected by many as the starter at center, while people keep saying Barnhart needs to see the field without a specific position for him. Rumler appears to be in that next tier from the 2019 class, along with offensive tackle Trevor Keegan. It’s doubtful that Rumler starts in 2020, but he should start to get some playing time. He’s penciled in as a backup offensive guard, and he may have to wait until redshirt juniors Andrew Stueber and/or Chuck Filiaga move on. I expect Rumler to make an appearance on the field goal protection unit and get some backup snaps at guard this year.

Prediction: Backup offensive guard

2019 Recruiting Awards

I know this seems a little bit late, but since I just wrapped up the final TTB Ratings for 2019, I thought it would be time to share “recruiting awards” for the 2019 class. Feel free to pipe in with your own choices, and you can glance back at, say, the 2016 awards (LINK) to see how I did (what’s up, Andrew David?).

Best Overall Recruit: S Daxton Hill
It was a battle to land Hill, who was sought by everyone. Some thought he would go to the home-state Sooners; some thought he would go where his older brother did, Oklahoma State; he was committed to Alabama for a time; and he committed to Michigan twice. He was the #14 overall player to the 247 Composite, and I have him with a 100 as the best safety in the class.

Best Offensive Recruit: RB Zach Charbonnet
Charbonnet has great potential to be a stud running back. He’s fast, strong, catches the ball, and can make people miss.

I know it’s a little bit late in the game, but back in the spring, I didn’t have time to review all the senior film for Michigan’s 2019 signees and give them updated TTB Ratings. I did that during the 2019 Season Countdown, so here are the final TTB Ratings for the class of 2019.

S Daxton Hill: 100
He’s the best safety in the class, though it’s an unimpressive safety class overall.

RB Zach Charbonnet: 83 90
As long as he can get/stay healthy, Charbonnet has the potential to be a high draft pick in the future.

DT Chris Hinton, Jr.: 90
He should be an early contributor with high long-term upside.

Jordan Poole surprised a lot of people when he went #28 to the Warriors (LINK).

2019 Season Countdown: #85 Nolan Rumler

Name: Nolan Rumler
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 310 lbs.
High school: Akron (OH) Hoban
Position: Center
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: N/A
Last year: Rumler was a senior in high school (LINK).
TTB Rating: N/A

Rumler was an Under Armour All-American who ended the 2019 recruiting cycle as a 4-star, the #10 offensive guard, and #174 overall. He was a heavy Michigan lean for years before he ended up committing.

I have Rumler as the most likely freshman lineman to play, but he’s still all the way down here at #85. Why? Because Michigan should have a pretty solid two-deep that won’t need much help from freshmen. There’s a possibility that an injury or two could force Rumler into the rotation, but I still think he’ll have at least a year on the sideline before playing. He’s probably headed for center eventually, and Michigan has both Cesar Ruiz and Stephen Spanellis as relatively experienced college players.
