2018 Season Countdown: #93 Sammy Faustin

Name: Sammy Faustin
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 190 lbs.
High school: Naples (FL) Naples
Position: Safety
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: N/A
Last year: Faustin was a senior in high school (LINK). He made 36 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 interception, 1 fumble recovery, and 3 pass breakups.

Faustin was a relatively unheralded recruit out of Florida whose 4.63 forty didn’t wow many observers. More impressively, he claimed a bench press of 305 lbs. and a squat of 385 lbs. What do those numbers represent? They seem to indicate a kid who can be physically imposing but who won’t make a ton of game-changing plays at the next level. Faustin has had some injury issues in high school, which have perhaps limited his production. Even so, the film makes him look like a safety, despite playing cornerback in high school.

Michigan needs reinforcements at safety, and those reinforcements could come in the form of Faustin. Physically, he’s close to being ready for college with his height, weight, and strength. The position change from corner to safety could take some time, and he will have to become proficient with his reads and technique to make up for some mediocre athleticism. The Wolverines have a few decent options at safety already, including senior Tyree Kinnel and junior Josh Metellus, plus Utah transfer Casey Hughes. I don’t see Faustin playing a key role this season, and I would expect him to redshirt, but there’s a chance for him to get some mop-up snaps or special teams duty.

Prediction: Redshirt

2018

Eyabi Anoma – DE – Baltimore (MD) St. Frances: Anoma is a 6’5″, 230 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Maryland, and Michigan, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #3 weakside end, and #41 overall. His head coach, Biff Poggi, says that Anoma is the best player he’s ever coached, and that includes a bunch of a high-quality players from his days at Baltimore (MD) Gilman. Anoma also visited for the BBQ at the Big House. All six Crystal Ball picks have him going to Alabama. This is his official visit.

Michael Barrett – RB – Valdosta (GA) Lowndes: Barrett is a 5’11”, 215 lb. dual-threat quarterback who projects to running back in college. He’s a 3-star, the #61 athlete, and #706 overall with offers from LSU, Maryland, and Michigan, among others. This is his official visit. UPDATE: Barrett is no longer visiting.

Ja’Marr Chase – WR – Metairie (LA) Archbishop Rummel: Chase is a 6’2″, 190 lb. prospect who recently decommitted from Florida. He’s a 4-star, the #12 wide receiver, and #69 overall with offers from Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, TCU, and Tennessee, among others. TCU has taken the Crystal Ball lead with 76% of current predictions. Michigan just recently offered, so that relationship is still new, but it’s a positive sign that he scheduled a visit to Ann Arbor so quickly. This is his official visit.

Hit the jump for several more visitors.

Recruiting Update: August 9, 2017

Warren G and his son, Olaijah Griffin (image via Twitter)

COMMITMENTS

Naples (FL) Naples cornerback/safety Sammy Faustin committed to Michigan (LINK).

Norcross (GA) Greater Atlanta Christian strongside end Chris Hinton, Jr., a 2019 prospect, committed to Michigan.

OFF THE BOARD

Houston (TX) Westfield defensive tackle Keondre Coburn committed to Texas. At 6’1″ and 329 lbs., the #103 overall prospect seems destined to be a fire hydrant of a nose tackle.

Pensacola (FL) Escambia wide receiver Jacob Copeland commmitted to Florida. He’s the #9 wideout and #52 overall.

Hampton (GA) Dutchtown safety Trey Dean committed to Tennessee.

Houston (TX) Dekaney tight end Malcolm Epps committed to Texas. The Longhorns now have two tight end commitments, which should be a signal that Mustapha Muhammad is headed elsewhere (a.k.a. Michigan).

Mission Viejo (CA) Mission Viejo cornerback Olaijah Griffin committed to UCLA. The son of rapper Warren G is the #49 player and #8 cornerback in the class.

Owings Mills (MD) McDonogh defensive tackle P.J. Mustipher committed to Penn State. The #98 overall prospect in 2018 is the younger brother of Notre Dame redshirt junior offensive guard Sam Mustipher.
