School in the News: Ohio State

Zach Harrison

It was announced today that Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is “retiring” after the Rose Bowl. (Afterward, he will probably take off a year, let people forget how he housed a domestic abuser, and then take a job as the head coach at Penn State or Florida State.)

Regardless, OSU will be led by 39-year-old offensive coordinator Ryan Day going forward. Day was 3-0 as the interim head coach during the beginning of the 2018 season, when Meyer was suspended for being a big jerk.

On the recruiting front, I doubt many committed prospects will start to jump ship, because the continuity is going to be there. I would imagine Day will keep most of the staff, even if the ax falls on defensive coordinator Greg Schiano. But since this is a site so heavily centered on recruiting, it’s worth taking a look at the Buckeye commits with Michigan offers:

  • 4-star S Jordan Battle
  • 3-star LB Steele Chambers
  • 4-star ATH Ronnie Hickman
  • 3-star OT Ryan Jacoby
  • 4-star C Harry Miller
  • 4-star DE Noah Potter
  • 4-star LB Cade Stover
  • 4-star WR Jameson Williams

Of those prospects, Michigan was only highly involved with Chambers. For a while it looked like Chambers, a Georgia native, might be a Michigan lean. I really like Cade Stover (a Ben Gedeon clone) and Ronnie Hickman, too, but Stover is a native Ohioan and Hickman never paid Michigan a ton of attention.

Most significantly, the departure of Meyer may push defensive end Zach Harrison harder toward Michigan. There have been varying rumors in the past couple weeks, some that he was leaning toward Michigan and some that he was leaning toward the home-state Buckeyes. Harrison is a 5-star prospect and a top-notch athlete. Of course, the possibility has been out there for a while that Meyer might be on his last legs at Ohio State, but the slight uncertainty of a first-time head coach might be enough to settle the issue once and for all in Harrison’s mind that he wants to pick Michigan.

Recruiting Update: April 30, 2018

Steele Chambers (image via MDJonline)

I’m not expecting much in the way of positive news right now, since Michigan’s team and coaching staff are visiting Paris and Normandy at the moment. So here’s a list of mostly bad news:

OFF THE BOARD

Roswell (GA) Blessed Trinity linebacker Steele Chambers committed to Ohio State. Chambers, a running back/linebacker ranked as the #29 ATH in the 247 Composite, visited Ohio State and then Michigan on a northern swing in late March.

Atlanta (GA) Marist safety Kyle Hamilton committed to Notre Dame. The 6’3″, 188-pounder had also taken a recent visit to Michigan before committing; Hamilton had been in town for Michigan’s “spring game” weekend that did not involve a spring game.

Gibsonia (PA) Pine-Richland offensive tackle Andrew Kristofic committed to Notre Dame. Is this another guy who took a visit to Michigan in the past month? Yes. Yes, it is.

Malvern (PA) Malvern Prep linebacker Keith Maguire, Jr. committed to Clemson. Maguire was offered in mid-March and never made a trip to Ann Arbor.

Homerville (GA) Clinch County linebacker Trezman Marshall committed to Georgia. A guy from Homerville, GA who didn’t pick an in-state school would be kind of a dick.

Allen (TX) Allen offensive guard E.J. Ndoma-Ogar committed to Oklahoma.

Mansfield (OH) Lexington linebacker Cade Stover committed to Ohio State. I knew Stover wouldn’t come to Michigan, but he was one of my most desired prospects in the 2019 class. He can do a lot of different things for the Buckeyes.

Austin (TX) Lake Travis wide receiver Garrett Wilson committed to Ohio State. He never showed any interest in Michigan.

Steele Chambers – LB – Roswell (GA) Blessed Trinity: Chambers is a 6’2″, 215 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #30 athlete, and #340 overall. As a junior in 2017, he had 198 carries for 1,301 yards and 23 touchdowns; he also made 70 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and 1 interception.

He’s a 3-star, the #20 pro-style quarterback, and #670 overall. He’s a teammate of Spencer Brown (see above). Many thought he would commit to Michigan after the offer, but Cade McNamara may have beaten him to the punch and stolen his spot. Regardless, 61% of the Crystal Ball picks are in favor of Michigan at this point.

George Karlaftis – DE – West Lafayette (IN) West Lafayette: Karlaftis is a 6’5″, 260 lb. Purdue legacy who committed to the Boilermakers in October of 2017; he also has offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #13 strongside end, and #171 overall.

Gabe Newburg – DE – Clayton (OH) Northmont: Newburg is a 6’5″, 230 lb. prospect with offers from Cincinnati, Michigan, Michigan State, Rutgers, and some MAC programs. He’s a 3-star, the #53 weakside end, and #799 overall. In the wake of his visit – which resulted in an offer – he is now favored to go to Michigan with 100% of the 247 Sports Crystal Ball picks.

Brandon Smith – LB – Mineral (VA) Louisa: Smith is a 6’5″, 215 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, and Virginia Tech, among others. He’s a 5-star, the #1 inside linebacker, and #19 overall. Some people have pegged him for defensive end, but he says he wants to play a linebacker, and Michigan is recruiting him as a linebacker. He’ll be visiting on April 3.

Dylan Wright – WR – Mesquite (TX) West: Wright is a 6’3″, 192-pounder with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oklahoma, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #31 wide receiver, and #185 overall.

His head coach, Biff Poggi, says that Anoma is the best player he’s ever coached, and that includes a bunch of a high-quality players from his days at Baltimore (MD) Gilman. Anoma also visited for the BBQ at the Big House. All six Crystal Ball picks have him going to Alabama. This is his official visit.

Michael Barrett – RB – Valdosta (GA) Lowndes: Barrett is a 5’11”, 215 lb. dual-threat quarterback who projects to running back in college. He’s a 4-star, the #12 wide receiver, and #69 overall with offers from Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, TCU, and Tennessee, among others. TCU has taken the Crystal Ball lead with 76% of current predictions. Michigan just recently offered, so that relationship is still new, but it’s a positive sign that he scheduled a visit to Ann Arbor so quickly. This is his official visit.
