After reading all the negative press (and not watching anything besides highlights) I have to say that this wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. For Speight. The OL was awful. A whole lot of throw-aways and sacks and throwing on the run.
That said both INTs were bad and the 1st was brutally bad.
Ultimately, I’m not phased by this performance. If the OL comes together I think Speight has close to a 50/50 shot at being the best passer in the Big Ten.
I’ll take my maize colored sunglasses off now, but only because it’s getting near bedtime.
Interesting. My opinion here is completely the opposite from the estimable Lanknows.
Based on reviews of the game, I expected that pressure drove his unimpressive stats, and it’s true… there was plenty of pressure.
But… from these amateur lenses, Speight looked pretty bad.
His mechanics looked pretty rough. He was throwing jump passes when it wasn’t even necessary. Honestly… the pick thrown to Glasgow was one of his most reasonable looking throws of the day.
Speight seems to exhibit a pattern of trying to drive balls right thru the defense even when he’s got time and space to loft the ball over the defendera to his target.
It’s true that some guys dropped passes that could have helped his stats, but other than one mediocre throw to DPJ in the flat, I didn’t see anyone drop a well placed ball. In fact, I’m not sure I can remember Speight throwing a well placed ball. I’ll have to watch again.
Ugly!
