Name: Mustapha Muhammad
Height:
6’4″
Weight:
245 lbs.
High school:
Missouri City (TX) Ridge Point
Position:
Tight end
Class:
Redshirt freshman
Jersey number:
#85
Last year:
I ranked Muhammad #74 and said he would be a backup tight end (LINK). He redshirted.
TTB Rating:
79

Muhammad was a borderline player last year, in my mind, a guy who could redshirt or play a little bit. As things turned out, maybe Michigan’s staff should have tried to get him on the field a little bit, since Zach Gentry left for the NFL one year early.

This year Muhammad should be the #3 tight end on the depth chart, behind Sean McKeon and Nick Eubanks. McKeon is very experienced, and Eubanks has made some big catches already in his first two years on campus. Muhammad will almost certainly start working in there with the first group a little bit. The other tight end options are very raw and skinny, such as Luke Schoonmaker and Erick All. I have always appreciated Muhammad’s blocking foremost among his skills, so I think that’s where he will make the biggest impact in 2019.

Prediction: Backup tight end

It’ll be interesting to see how Gattis uses tight ends.

If Gattis has a TE that is a weapon, he will get him the ball based on PSU and Bama stints. Guys like Gesicki and Irv Smith posted good numbers. I think he can live with a TE being a so so blocker, but the guy must be a legit receiving threat and be able to line up in line or H-back (and even FB). Biggest change we may see from previous years is they play the best guy and the rest ride the pine. Other than short yardage, they will cut way back on the heavy formations.
