As Michigan and the modern football world keep inching together, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the school’s all-time leaders in passing attempts. This 2020 season probably won’t break many records due to the shortened schedule, but if Michigan were playing 12 or 13 games this year . . . look out!

Hit the jump for more.

  1. 456 – John Navarre (2003)
  2. 448 – John Navarre (2002)
  3. 399 – Chad Henne (2004)
  4. 389 – Jake Rudock (2015)
  5. 385 – John Navarre (2001)
  6. 382 – Chad Henne (2005)
  7. 381 – Shea Patterson (2019)
  8. 350 – Tom Brady (1998)
  9. 345 – Devin Gardner (2013)
  10. 341 – Tom Brady (1999)
  11. 331 – Wilton Speight (2016)
  12. 328 – Chad Henne (2006)
  13. 325 – Shea Patterson (2018)
  14. 307 – Brian Griese (1997)
  15. 296 – Todd Collins (1993)
  16. 291 – Denard Robinson (2010)
  17. 288 – Todd Collins (1994)
  18. 283 – Devin Gardner (2014)
  19. 281 – Tate Forcier (2009)
  20. 278 – Chad Henne (2007)
  21. 277 – Jim Harbaugh (1986)
  22. 269 – Scott Dreisbach (1996)
  23. 266 – Elvis Grbac (1990)
  24. 258 – Denard Robinson (2011)
  25. 254 – Elvis Grbac (1991)

I think it’s noteworthy that every year since 2001 is included on this list except for years when injuries muddied the quarterback situation:

  • 2008 (Nick Sheridan/Steve Threet)
  • 2012 (Denard Robinson/Devin Gardner)
  • 2017 (Wilton Speight/John O’Korn/Brandon Peters)

Current Michigan quarterback Joe Milton is averaging 35.7 attempts per game, which puts him on a pace for 321 attempts over nine games in 2020, which would put him at #14 overall. If the Wolverines were to play twelve regular season games and a bowl game, that would put him on pace for 464 attempts (#1 overall).
