Michigan Inexperienced but Reloading on Defense

Michigan Inexperienced but Reloading on Defense

First things first, Michigan lost a lot of talent from last year’s team. However, there is no question about the impact that Don Brown has made on the program. He developed a defense that led the nation in many categories throughout the year. He is also responsible for developing raw talent into NFL caliber players. There is no reason to believe that will not be the case again this year.

The defensive front four will be elite yet again and among the nation’s best. Rashan Gary will lead that group and he has a full year of experience under his belt. The same can be said for Mo Hurst and many believe that he is a first round draft pick. Bryan Mone will have to stay healthy to truly show off his skills this year. He has had some very bad luck when it comes to injuries and Michigan cannot afford that this year. Chase Winovich, a seasoned 4-star LB out of high school has a year under his belt at DE and will anchor the weak side.

Speaking of Chase, he has really bulked up and he can get up the field quickly. The question for this group is where does the help come from? The lack of experience behind the front four is what everyone should and will be talking about until we see that first game in the fall. However, there were several players that took a giant leap forward during last year’s bowl practices. Michael Dwumfour is a name that you should become familiar with right away. He is poised and ready to contribute. He is still battling an upper body injury, but he will be ready to go by fall.

Others that stepped up were Ron Johnson, Lawrence Marshall, and Carlo Kemp. Kemp will make an immediate impact. Early enrollee, Donovan Jeter has acquitted himself very well during the first handful of practices and will likely see the field. When Aubrey Solomon arrives he will play out of necessity as the depth behind the starters just isn’t there yet. You can add walk-on DT Carl Myers to the depth chart too. One more wildcard will be 4 star DE Luiji Vilain. Will he be able to catch up quickly enough to provide support?

After writing the first few paragraphs of this article, I am starting to think I must have been drunk on blue Kool Aid when I stated that we will not see a drop off from last year’s defense. Do I think the first four on the defensive front are elite? Absolutely, but the depth isn’t there yet and we have not even talked about the inexperience in the secondary.

So, who plays Viper? I really think that position gets far too much hype. Peppers certainly helped glorify that position even more. He is truly a once in every decade type of player. The plan before spring practice was to rotate Josh Metellus and Khaleke Hudson. Yet, it appears as if that plan has been abandoned after just a few practices. Hudson has clearly dominated the time spent with the one’s.

Metellus, after stepping in for Peppers during the Orange Bowl, has been playing safety while Hudson has taken over the majority of the reps at Viper. Not only has he taken over, he is performing at an extremely high level. He is aggressive and one hell of a hitter. Hudson has been backed up by several players. Noah Furbush, Josh Uche, and Jordan Glasgow have all stepped in while Metellus was at safety. By the way, Jordan Glasgow will likely earn a scholarship this fall if there is any attrition.

Linebacker is a position of strength. Our LB’s are already playing faster than last year. Mike McCray is the leader of the defense and most likely a team captain. If there is an issue in the locker room, the players turn to him. Devin Bush will be an upgrade. He is another big hitter with excellent speed and pass coverage skills. Michael Wroblewski has made a name for himself and is a vocal leader on the practice field. He directs traffic and ensures that everyone is where they are supposed to be. Noah Furbush ran with the one’s, McCray and Bush for several reps on Tuesday. Josh Uche, Elysee Mbem- Bosse, and Devin Gil will all contribute. True Freshman Ben Mason has impressed early and will contribute somewhere. He has seen action at FB and LB and will at least contribute on special teams.

The CB’s are young and inexperienced, but extremely talented! David Long would have played more last season if not for a lower leg issue that sidelined him for a while. He has been sticking to our talented WR’s like glue. He is having a fantastic spring so far. Rest assured, he is All-B1G material. On the other side, LaVert Hill just needs to be more consistent and gain that much needed experience to compliment his game. His ceiling is very high. There are plenty of options to back up the corners. Ambry Thomas has been electric and one that will see the field as a true freshman. He just may lock down the Nickel in front of the more experienced Brandon Watson. Thomas and Benjamin St Juste were running with the two’s on Tuesday. Keith Washington and Watson provide even more depth. Although, it would have been nice to have Jeremy Clarke back this year.

Safety play will be far better than expected. Tyree Kinnel is a natural and an excellent tackler in space. He loves the contact and can close with the best of them. He will be an All-B1G selection (2nd or 3rd team). Josh Metellus, another big hitter will take the other safety spot even though he prefers to play Viper. The issue with safety is very obvious. Where is the depth? Glasgow has been getting reps with the two’s along with Jaylen Kelly-Powell. J’Marick Woods and possibly Brad Hawkins could provide some much needed depth. Brandon Watson could help in a pinch, but we cannot afford an injury to either Metellus or Kinnel.

As expected, the defense has dominated our offense for much of the early spring practices. How much of a drop off will we see from last year? Are we a top 10-15 defense?

A side note on Chase Winovich. He weighed in at 256 lbs yesterday on his way to 260. He has graded out to be the best DL by Mattison through the first portion of spring practice. Remember, every single rep is graded.

I loved Winovich as a pass rush specialist last year. Next year he’ll have to be more of an every down contributor. Do you see him making that next step?

That is what Mattison is striving for. Chase has had one heck of a spring so far. High motor, but needs the weight he is putting on. Battling a little bit of a hip problem right now.

Winovich emerging shouldn’t surprise anyone. Getting snaps on last year’s loaded DL spoke volumes. That he did it as a sophomore playing DE for the the first time makes it even more impressive. Like I said last year, the profile is one of a future star.

I’d like to see Michigan continue to look to recruit OLBs who project to WDE.

Thanks so much for your guys’ collaboration. Loving the info.

A question – any insight on special teams? How’s Nordin look? Who in your mind stands out as lead candidates at returner?

Funny you ask. A well known individual brought this up today. He thinks things are questionable in the kicking game. I wouldn’t worry about the return game as much as the FG unit. When Brad Robbins arrives, he is expected to be a year starter at Punter.

Ugh 4 year starter at Punter is what I meant to say.

Wow, that would be something to have two specialists start for four years (presuming Nordin as well). They really expect Robbins to beat out Will Hart this year? Good competition for sure.

Robbins was an absolute steal at the last minute! He had offers from Illinois, Navy, and Rutgers. Urban Meyer was begging Ash at Rutgers to keep him away from us. However, he would have ended up at Illinois before them due to his Engineering aspirations.

I love the info, but it makes me sad that 9/2 is so far away.

On another note, Don Brown’s defense allows players to play fast and aggressive, which, with the right athletes, can ease the growing pains of youth. I wouldn’t expect elite-level defense like last year, but a slight step below it.

I think that is fair. The inexperience and depth may cost us a game we should win.

I agree with this. If you have a blitzing defense where you remove some of the read-and-react aspects of playing on that side of the ball, you can have success. But if you’re going to do that, you have to have the right guys playing and make sure they get home more often than not. Not every team can blitz like mad, because some teams don’t have the horses. I think we’re lacking depth in some areas, but we do have the horses to make it work, at least with the first unit.

Linebacker may not be a liability, but I’m not so sure about it being a strength at this point. Is this one of the top 20 or so linebacking units in the country? Do we have anyone who is all-conference to all-American caliber? I don’t really think so. Lots of guys who are “solid”, but top end speed and athleticism seem to be limited. And I always take “running with the ones” with a grain of salt. Having 5 or 6 guys who are in the mix to start doesn’t really tell you what the talent level of that starting group is relative to our top competitors. In the end, they can’t really be judged playing against their friends and teammates.

Bush would really need to make a major leap to replicate what Gedeon’s overall play, even with his relative weakness in pass coverage.

McCray should step forward of course, but if you include Peppers then the group as a whole will certainly fall back.

The optimism is nice to hear. I do worry a bit about people over-reacting and expecting a top 10 defense with so much inexperience.

The one knock on Brown before last year was that he needed experienced vets in the secondary. This year, Kinnel is the only one that comes close and even he has seen pretty limited duty.

I think the optimism is there because Brown was able to have top 10 defenses with Boston College’s talent. I would say this Michigan team, with 10 new starters might still be more talented than his best BC teams in terms of pure ability. And all (starters) will be in their 2nd year in the system, and have had the benefit of following behind a guy who will likely get drafted as well.

I agree. The expectations are high, because Brown has done well with pretty much all of his defenses in the past. But he also did exceptionally well in YEAR TWO of his stays elsewhere, so if there is a drop-off, it shouldn’t be expected to be by much.

I think you guys are being too optimistic with all the turnover and experience that Michigan has. If Michigan has a top 10 defense this year, Brown will deserve a Broyles award and a pay raise.

I think Don Brown may be the best DC in the country…but we saw this defense get worked pretty good even last game. The year 2 thing is important but so is losing 9 or 10 starters.

Of course I hope we do end up in the top 10. It’s a bit of a quibble to say we are closer to top 20 than top 10 anyway.

For those of you that don’t know why that sign is up there. Dave Adolph coined that phrase. You will see his name on the bottom right as a tribute. He was a Sr. Defensive Analyst on Harbaugh’s staff the past 2 years. He passed away in Feb.

This is the sign hanging from the goal post when entering Glick Fieldhouse. Sitting out or in Red jersey’s yesterday were DPJ, Crawford, Ways, Harris, Bunting, Washington, Long, Walker, Higdon, LaVert Hill, and Ulizio. The practices have been extremely physical.

Well you know one now brother. Since I was a kid and first laid eyes on the winged helmet. Been catching a lot of grief from the Carolina fans every since Michigan loss to them in that bowl game. Something that shouldn’t have, and should never happen again. But anyway, appreciate the good stuff you put out about the football team. Go Blue!

A practice observer from yesterday highlighted a few players. Ambry Thomas and how well he covers, Peters had a better practice than O’Korn, Wheatley had a good day, McKeon got open, but had some drops, McDoom & N. Johnson played well in the slot, Evans had a good day, Poggi & Metellus were the big blockers/hitters.

I hope that gives you a little more insight to what has been posted already.
