Recruiting Update: December 17, 2015

December 17, 2015

Covington (GA) Newton LB Jaquan Henderson

COMMITMENT
Pembroke Pines (FL) Flanagan linebacker Devin Bush, Jr. committed to Michigan in the class of 2016 yesterday (LINK).

Covington (GA) Newton wide receiver Jeremiah Holloman committed to Michigan in the class of 2017 (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017
McCalla (AL) McAdory cornerback Malcolm Askew was offered by Michigan. Askew is a 6’0″, 175 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #14 athlete, and #128 overall. Askew could very well play receiver at the next level (35 catches, 1,000+ yards, 10 TDs this year), but he is being looked at more as a corner (35 tackles, 8 pass breakups, 1 interception). It’s probably too tall of a task for Michigan to pull Askew out of SEC country, but you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas defensive tackle Kivon Bennett was offered by Michigan. Bennett is a 6’3″, 255 lb. prospect with offers from Illinois, North Carolina State, and Ohio State, among others. Unranked so far, he’s a teammate of numerous players Michigan has offered. Bennett is just starting to get a lot of notice, and has pulled in his biggest offers just recently, so it’s safe to say that his recruitment will be picking up shortly. Michigan has not had much success recruiting St. Thomas Aquinas, so this will probably not go very far.

Hit the jump for a couple more new offers, a couple guys who went off the board, and some miscellaneous bits.

Brunswick (GA) Glynn cornerback DeeJay Dallas decommitted from Georgia. Dallas is a 6’0″, 175 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Florida, and Missouri, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #17 athlete, and #173 overall. He visited Michigan for the Ohio State game, and he recently said that the Wolverines were in his top three, even before he decommitted. While listed as an athlete, I think he fits best as a nickel corner at the next level.

Covington (GA) Newton linebacker Jaquan Henderson, a UCLA commit, was offered by Michigan. Henderson is a 6’1″, 205 lb. prospect who committed to the Bruins in September; he also has offers from Indiana, Kentucky, and Minnesota, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #31 safety, and #372 overall. He claims a 4.5 forty, and his Hudl page lists a 9.1″ vertical, so he might be able to touch the very bottom of a basketball net. Henderson is a speedy outside linebacker type who does a good job of blitzing off the edge and playing in coverage. He might be a little underrated because of his tweener size, but he could be a very good player in the right system. He is a teammate of Holloman and running back Kurt Taylor, and some insiders have intimated that Henderson could flip to Michigan soon.

Powder Springs (GA) McEachern quarterback Bailey Hockman was offered by Michigan. Hockman is a 6’2″, 210 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, and Florida State, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #5 pro-style quarterback, and #92 overall. Hockman recently decommitted from Georgia after Mark Richt was fired, and he’s re-evaluating his options, some of which are brand new. He claims a 4.7 forty. I have been unable to find junior stats, but as a sophomore in 2014, he had 42 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Hockman is a lefty with pretty good wheels. He does not have great arm strength, but he throws a nice, catchable ball with smooth mechanics. Michigan running back commit Kurt Taylor, who is friends with Hockman, has already been trying to recruit the southpaw to Ann Arbor, and Hockman says he would like to visit. He wants to make a decision before his senior year.

OFF THE BOARD
Brownsburg (IN) Brownsburg quarterback Hunter Johnson, a 2017 prospect, flipped from Tennessee to Clemson. He’s the #1 pro-style quarterback in the 2017 class.

Hinesville (GA) Liberty cornerback Richard LeCounte, a 2017 prospect, committed to Georgia. This was expected and he did not show much interest in Michigan.

Allen (TX) Allen offensive tackle Greg Little committed to Ole Miss. Little was previously committed to Texas A&M. He is a teammate of 2016 defensive end Levi Onwuzurike, who is one of Michigan’s top remaining targets. Onwuzurike is very quiet on the recruiting front, but it does not appear that Ole Miss will factor into his recruitment. He recently tweeted that he would be releasing a top four soon, and Michigan will probably be in that group.

The guys who don’t play and/or saw themselves demoted to bench status by the end of the year. Not hard to figure out really.

Shallman’s the interesting one to me. He’s been buried, but there’s been rumors of a position switch since he was a recruit. Will he buy-in, change positions, or seek opportunities elsewhere?
