Name: Christian Boivin
Height:
6’0″
Weight:
217 lbs.
High school:
Traverse City (MI) West
Position:
Linebacker
Class:
Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number:
#40
Last year:
I ranked Boivin #113 and said he would be a backup running back (LINK). He transitioned to linebacker and played in eleven games on special teams, making 1 tackle.
TTB Rating:
 N/A

Here’s what I had to say about Boivin in last year’s preview:

“When Boivin came into college, I thought for sure he would be headed for the safety position. He runs a bit like a linebacker but doesn’t really have linebacker size.”

Well, he played running back in year one, but last year he moved to linebacker despite being listed at 6’0″ and 204 lbs., which is very light for a linebacker. He was named Scout Team Defensive Player of the Week for the week leading up to UConn, and he was a regular special teams contributor all year long.

This year Boivin is listed at 217 lbs., which is a bit more reasonable for a linebacker. His chances of actually playing linebacker are still quite slim, but it’s fair to expect him to maintain a sizable role on special teams.

Prediction: Backup linebacker and special teamer

2022 Season Countdown: #113 Christian Boivin

Christian Boivin

Name: Christian Boivin
Height:
6’0″
Weight:
204 lbs.
High school:
Traverse City (MI) West
Position:
Running back
Class:
Redshirt freshman
Jersey number:
#40
Last year:
I ranked Boivin #125 and said he would be a backup running back (LINK). He had 1 carry for 2 yards.
TTB Rating:
N/A

When Boivin came into college, I thought for sure he would be headed for the safety position. He runs a bit like a linebacker but doesn’t really have linebacker size. It makes some sense that he would stick at running back, though, because Michigan only had 4 scholarship running backs on the roster in 2021. Walk-ons Leon Franklin and Boivin appeared to be the next couple guys on the depth chart, and that resulted in Boivin getting 1 carry for 2 yards in the blowout win over Northern Illinois.

I expect Boivin to be in roughly the same spot in 2022 now that Hassan Haskins has graduated and C.J. Stokes is being brought in to maintain the number at 4 scholarship backs. Boivin is a little bit stiff to be a real contributor, but he can eat up a few carries at the end of blowouts to keep other guys fresh.

Prediction: Backup running back

2021 Season Countdown: #125 Christian Boivin

Name: Christian Boivin
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 205 lbs.
High school: Traverse City (MI) West
Position: Safety
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: N/A
Last year: Boivin was a senior in high school. He ran for 940 yards and 11 touchdowns, while also making 72 tackles, 1 sack, 3 interceptions, and 2 blocked kicks.
TTB Rating: N/A

Boivin committed to Michigan as a preferred walk-on in the 2021 class. This came after an odd year where he transferred to Iowa before returning to Traverse City West once Michigan re-instituted the fall football season. He was a standout on both sides of the ball, rushing for 940 yards and 11 touchdowns, while also contributing 72 tackles and 3 interceptions on defense.

Boivin is headed for safety at the next level, but he’s a little bit stiff. His change-of-direction skills are not great, but he does have a little bit of burst. To me looks like a guy who could play on kickoff and punt coverage teams, but he would be limited on offense and defense.

Prediction: Redshirt
