2021 Season Countdown: #43 David Ojabo

David Ojabo (image via 247 Sports)

Name: David Ojabo
Height:
6’5″
Weight:
250 lbs.
High school:
Blairstown (NJ) Blair Academy
Position:
Outside linebacker
Class:
Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number:
#55
Last year:
I ranked Ojabo #59 and said he would be a backup defensive end (LINK). He made 1 tackle.
TTB Rating:
85

Michigan brought in Ojabo as a project in the 2019 class. He seemed like a guy who could play defensive end in their system, outside linebacker in a 3-4, or maybe even 3-tech in a 4-3 once his body fully developed. It seemed like nobody could get a bead on him because he was a relatively recent convert to American football, having been born in Nigeria and raised in Scotland. Michigan played him at the SAM linebacker position in 2020, a spot that had been vacated by Josh Uche, but Ojabo was not nearly as effective.

Ojabo remains at outside linebacker in 2021 and has a chance to start. He still looked very raw in 2020, and I’m in “wait-and-see” mode. I have heard talk that he could potentially start. I have my doubts and think Michigan has better players, but then again, the learning curve might come into play here. If he was a blank canvas coming in, maybe the picture is starting to take shape. At the very least, I know Aidan Hutchinson will be ahead of him, and I think Taylor Upshaw will be, too. Meanwhile, Braiden McGregor, Jaylen Harrell, and others are waiting in the wings for their opportunity, too.

Prediction: Backup outside linebacker

2020 Season Countdown: #59 David Ojabo

David Ojabo (image via Wolverines Wire)

Name: David Ojabo
Height:
6’5″
Weight:
245 lbs.
High school:
Blairstown (NJ) Blair Academy
Position:
Defensive end
Class:
Redshirt freshman
Jersey number:
#71
Last year:
I ranked Ojabo #71 and said he would redshirt (LINK). He redshirted
TTB Rating:
 85

Ojabo, from New Jersey via Scotland via Nigeria, spent 2019 tearing it up on scout team, apparently; he was named the Defensive Scout Team Player of the Year while redshirting. With outside linebacker/defensive end Josh Uche moving on to the New England Patriots, there was some scuttlebutt this off-season that Ojabo might take over that pass rushing specialist role.

I’m not sure how realistic that might be anymore. Ojabo is stuck at home in Scotland due to the coronavirus pandemic, and it’s not clear if he will be able to return to the United States before the season begins (or maybe “if it begins). And when he does return, what kind of condition will he be in without being able to participate in workouts with his teammates and Michigan’s S&C staff?

I don’t think Ojabo can do all the things Uche did, but he is kind of a freak athlete who has some pass rushing ability. Perhaps he can replicate Uche’s second year, when he made 3 tackles and 1 sack.

Prediction: Backup defensive end

Nightly Roundup: January 11, 2019

Nate Schonle (#81)

Nate Schoenle says he’s coming back for a fifth year. He said in his Instagram post that he needed two surgeries, which explains his absence in 2019.

Schoenle isn’t a great receiver, but he’s a heck of a blocker and special teams player, so his return will be a bonus.

Also, Ambry Thomas says he’s coming back for his senior year, which is what should have been expected.

Final TTB Ratings for 2019

Daxton Hill

Help out the blog by making purchases at Amazon from links like this one (LINK):

I know it’s a little bit late in the game, but back in the spring, I didn’t have time to review all the senior film for Michigan’s 2019 signees and give them updated TTB Ratings. I did that during the 2019 Season Countdown, so here are the final TTB Ratings for the class of 2019.

S Daxton Hill: 100
He’s the best safety in the class, though it’s an unimpressive safety class overall.

RB Zach Charbonnet: 83 90
As long as he can get/stay healthy, Charbonnet has the potential to be a high draft pick in the future.

DT Chris Hinton, Jr.: 90
He should be an early contributor with high long-term upside.
