Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Channing Stribling

Channing Stribling

I don’t know if I’ll do these every week like I tried to do with the NFL season, but when there’s no other football going on, maybe I’ll take a swing. The American Alliance of Football began its inaugural season this past weekend, and several Michigan players are trying to make a go of it.

Channing Stribling probably had the best debut of any Michigan player, making 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 pass breakup. Stribling plays for the Memphis Express, who lost to the Birmingham Iron, 26-0.

  • Matt Godin, DT (San Antonio Commanders): Godin made 2 tackles and 1 QB hit in a 15-6 win over the San Diego Fleet.
  • Ty Isaac, RB (Birmingham Iron): Isaac was on the inactive list for the Iron’s 26-0 win over Memphis.
  • Denard Robinson, RB (Atlanta Legends): Robinson ran 5 times for 3 yards (0.6 YPC) and caught 1 pass for 5 yards in a 40-6 loss to the Orlando Apollos.
  • De’Veon Smith (Orlando Apollos): Smith carried the ball 5 times for 13 yards (2.6 YPC) and 1 touchdown, along with scoring a 2-point conversion on a rushing attempt. The other two running backs for the Apollos averaged 7.3 and 7.0 yards per attempt, but neither one scored on the ground. Smith also caught 1 pass for 8 yards.

American Alliance of Football: Viewers guide for Michigan fans

The American Alliance of Football begins its inaugural season today. In case you haven’t seen it, here’s a brief rundown of the league from CBS Sports (LINK).

Here’s a game-by-game breakdown of what to watch for Michigan fans:
Saturday, February 9 @ 4:00 p.m. EST: San Diego Fleet (no Michigan players) @ San Diego Commanders (DL Matt Godin)
Saturday, February 9 @ 8:00 p.m. EST: Atlanta Legends (RB Denard Robinson) vs. Orlando Apollos (RB De’Veon Smith)
Sunday, February 10 @ 4:00 p.m. EST: Memphis Express (CB Channing Stribling) @ Birmingham Iron (Ty Isaac)
Sunday, February 10 @ 8:00 p.m. EST:
Arizona Hotshots (no Michigan players) vs. Salt Lake Stallions (no Michigan players)

I’m throwing my fandom behind the Atlanta Legends, not only because of Denard Robinson but because I actively dislike players on the other teams with Michigan players.

Both Saturday games will be broadcast on CBS.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Tom Brady

Tom Brady

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was 28/44 for 317 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 23-14 victory over the San Diego Chargers.

Honorable mention: New York Jet David Harris had 9 tackles and 1 tackle for loss in a 30-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Jacksonville Jaguars running back Denard Robinson had 10 carries for 30 yards before suffering a foot sprain that will cause him to miss the final three games of the season; the Jaguars lost to the Houston Texas, 27-13. Oakland Raider Charles Woodson made 8 tackles, 1 interception, and 1 pass breakup in a 24-13 win over Jim Harbaugh’s San Francisco 49ers.
