Deron Irving-Bey, Ex-Wolverine

Deron Irving-Bey

Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Deron Irving-Bey is transferring out of the program and is headed to Central Michigan. Irving-Bey is a 6’5″, 274-pounder who was a 4-star, the #9 strongside end, and #249 overall in the class of 2017. He will join fellow 2017 recruit Ja’Raymond Hall, an offensive guard, at CMU.

I gave Irving-Bey a TTB Rating of 59 when he committed (LINK) and parked him at #69 in this year’s countdown (LINK). This transfer is not at all surprising, though I thought he would stick around for a couple years before transferring. Despite playing in the 2017 Army All-American Bowl, I thought he was overrated by the recruiting sites.

Michigan has now lost three commits from that 2017 class, including Hall, Irving-Bey, and defensive end Corey Malone-Hatcher, who medically retired.

2018 Season Countdown: #69 Deron Irving-Bey

Name: Deron Irving-Bey
Height: 6’5″
Weight: 274 lbs.
High school: Flint (MI) Southwestern
Position: Defensive tackle
Class: Redshirt freshman
Jersey number: #44
Last year: I ranked Irving-Bey #90 and said he would redshirt (LINK). He redshirted.

Irving-Bey was an Army All-American in 2017, but his services weren’t needed on the field once he got to campus. Michigan was stacked on the defensive line, and a lot of those guys return. Irving-Bey can play Anchor (Rashan Gary) or 3-tech (Aubrey Solomon), but both positions have guys blocking him, and the only player to leave was nose tackle Maurice Hurst, Jr. I don’t see Irving-Bey stepping into a big role this season, though I do expect to see him get some snaps.

Prediction: Backup defensive tackle

2017 Season Countdown: #90 Deron Irving-Bey

Deron Irving-Bey

Name: Deron Irving-Bey
Height: 6’5″
Weight: 271 lbs.
High school: Flint (MI) Southwestern
Position: Defensive end
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: N/A
Last year: Irving-Bey was a senior in high school. He made 79 tackles, 17 TFLs, 15 sacks, 4 FFs, and 3 FRs.
TTB Rating: 59

Irving-Bey looked like a Michigan State lean at one point, but a visit with Greg Mattison seemed to change the dynamic of his recruitment. Then he seemed all but a lock to Michigan, and his public announcement took longer than expected. He committed to Michigan in mid-December and then played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in early January. He did not earn rave reviews during the Army Bowl practice week, and he also wasn’t a standout in the game.

I gave Irving-Bey a final TTB Rating of 59, and I see him topping out as a backup. He has some raw skills, but they have to be developed, and I think there are other guys who will surge past him. Jim Harbaugh is not shy about burning redshirts, and that includes guys who do not seem like instant stars. Especially on the defensive line where having a lot of bodies is a good thing to keep people fresh, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Irving-Bey play this year, but I don’t think he will be an impact contributor. My guess is he’ll redshirt, but it could go either way. At the very least, he has Rashan Gary and Carlo Kemp ahead of him, and there are a couple freshmen who could move ahead of him long-term, too.

Prediction: Redshirt

2017 Recruiting Grades: Defense

Consider helping TTB by buying something via the Amazon ad below:

I posted the 2017 offensive recruiting grades last week (LINK), so here are my thoughts on the defensive side of the ball. Click on the player names below for their commitment posts.

DEFENSIVE END: B+
Commits (4): Deron Irving-Bey, Donovan JeterCorey Malone-Hatcher, Kwity Paye, Luiji Vilain
Decommits (0): N/A
Why? Michigan went after some elite rush ends (Jaelan Phillips, K’Lavon Chaisson, etc.) in this cycle, but none showed much interest. Instead, Michigan got home-stater Malone-Hatcher, Boston College decommit Paye, and Canada native Vilain as weakside end types. I thought Vilain improved significantly over the last couple years since moving from Ontario to Virginia. On the strong side, Michigan got Irving-Bey and Jeter, both of whom could end up as a 3-technique tackles. I don’t see dominant players here, but it is a solid group and they’ll get high-quality coaching.

Thoughts on 2017 U.S. Army All-American Bowl

Donovan Peoples-Jones (image via USA Today)

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl took place yesterday, and there were several Michigan-related players involved – including offensive tackle Chuck Filiaga, who committed to the Wolverines during the broadcast (LINK). Here are my thoughts on the game, which was won 27-17 by the East.

MICHIGAN COMMITS

Cheshire (CT) Cheshire Academy wide receiver Tarik Black was a backup wideout for the East team, but he was the first receiver in off the bench. He earned positive reviews throughout the week of practice for his route-running abilities, something that I noted in his commitment post. The East quarterbacks targeted him a few times, but he ended the game with just 1 catch for 9 yards. One of the incompletions was a back-shoulder fade on which Black failed to adjust (a tough play that almost never works with such little time to build chemistry), and the other was a post route that was thrown too high and broken up by the defensive back. He played about as expected.

Aledo (TX) Aledo offensive tackle Chuck Filiaga was the backup right tackle for the West. To be honest, I did not keep an eye out for Filiaga. He was the backup right tackle, and there were too many other players to watch.

Flint (MI) Southwestern defensive end Deron Irving-Bey was a backup defensive end for the East squad. He’s another player that I did not notice, except for 1 QB pressure. I did record the game, and I’ll go back and take a look before finalizing the TTB Ratings, but for now I have nothing significant to report. I can say that he did not stand out, because if he had, I would have noticed.

Hit the jump for more.
