2017 Recruiting Update: December 8, 2016

COMMITMENTS

Suffield (CT) Suffield Academy wide receiver Brad Hawkins, Jr. appears to be a member of the 2017 class now. The 6’2″, 190-pounder graduated high school from Camden (NJ) Camden in 2016, and usually these prep school things don’t work out for Michigan. However, Hawkins and the coaching staff expect him to be in this class now. Here are his highlights from this fall:

Detroit (MI) King cornerback Ambry Thomas committed to Michigan (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017

Dallas (TX) Bishop Dunne cornerback Chevin Calloway decommitted from Iowa. He’s a 4-star, the #12 cornerback, and #113 overall. Michigan is not and has not been involved, even though they have a need at cornerback. He is leaning toward Arkansas, though Tom Herman is trying to get him to stay in-state with the Longhorns.

Clearwater (FL) Central Catholic wide receiver C.J. Cotman decommitted from Tennessee. He’s a 4-star, the #16 athlete, and #278 overall. Michigan isn’t involved, and he’s taking a trip to North Carolina this coming weekend.

Virginia Beach (VA) Bishop Sullivan Catholic defensive tackle Breyon Gaddy decommitted from Tennessee, along with his twin brother. The 4-star, #19 defensive tackle, and #323 overall prospect is taking an official to Maryland this weekend.

Visitors: Michigan vs. Wisconsin

Alex Leatherwood

This might be Michigan’s biggest recruiting weekend of the year, since the MSU and OSU games are on the road. So here’s an early list of the visitors headed to Ann Arbor.

2017

Jordan Anthony – LB – Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy: Anthony is a 6’0″, 220 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Penn State, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #7 outside linebacker, and #115 overall. Though he has played the last couple seasons in Florida, he’s a Maryland native. The Crystal Ball is 40% in favor of Michigan. This is his official visit.

Markquese Bell – S – Bridgeton (NJ) Bridgeton: I did a scouting report on Bell in April (LINK). He tweeted not long ago that distance is no longer a factor in his decision, which has made some people think that he’s leaning away from Rutgers and perhaps toward Michigan. UPDATE: Bell is no longer planning to visit.

Kenney “K.J.” Britt – LB – Oxford (AL) Oxford: Britt is a 6’0″, 232 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, and Michigan, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #15 inside linebacker, and #317 overall. So far his Crystall Ball is 67% for Auburn and 33% for Georgia. UPDATE: Britt is no longer planning to visit.

Hit the jump for a bunch of people who are planning to visit, I swear.

2017 Recruiting Update: July 5, 2016

Plantation (FL) American Heritage offensive tackle Kai-Leon-Herbert

OFF THE BOARD

Dallas (TX) Woodrow Wilson cornerback Darrion Green committed to SMU. His Michigan offer was considered a big deal, and so is SMU’s, frankly: Green is partially deaf, so it’s quite an accomplishment to be recruited by FBS programs. His Michigan offer was probably not committable, however, and the Michigan fans who were concerned that such a low-ranked prospect (#179 CB, #1703 overall) could take up a spot in Michigan’s class can rest easy for now.

Oak Ridge (TN) Oak Ridge wide receiver Tee Higgins committed to Clemson. He’s a 5-star and the #3 wideout in the class, behind Donovan Peoples-Jones and Joseph Lewis.

Orlando (FL) Dr. Phillips defensive end Robert Porcher IV committed to Nebraska. He is, of course, the son of former Detroit Lions defensive end Robert Porcher. The third. In case you got confused.

MISCELLANEY

Plantation (FL) American Heritage offensive tackle Kai-Leon Herbert will announce his college decision on July 6, which is tomorrow. He narrowed his list to Florida, Miami, and Michigan, but most believe it’s between the Gators and Wolverines. For what it’s worth, I put in my Crystal Ball for Michigan.

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech offensive guard Jordan Reid will announce his college decision on July 10 at The Opening in Oregon. His final five are Florida, Michigan, Michigan State, Pitt, and Tennessee.

Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy center Cesar Ruiz put Michigan in his top eight. He had named Michigan his leader at one point, and then named a top twelve with no favorites. So the list is getting whittled down.

Lexington (KY) Lafayette offensive tackle Jedrick Wills named Michigan to his top eight.

Here’s a list of Michigan commits and targets who will be participating in The Opening over this coming weekend (LINK).

It’s getting difficult to keep all of Michigan’s on-campus camps in order, so I’m going to include any leftover visitors not mentioned elsewhere here. Some of these players are camping/have camped, while others are simply stopping by campus to see what all the fuss is about. The main purpose of these lists is to identify the players who are actively showing interest in Michigan, so it probably doesn’t matter a whole lot whether these guys are wearing cleats or flip-flops.

2017

Jhamon Ausbon – WR – Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy: Ausbon is a 6’2″, 217 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #11 wide receiver, and #67 overall. He camped with Michigan when they made their way to Florida, and he also got a chance to see the team practice during the spring session at IMG Academy.

Dennis Bell – LB – Ellenwood (GA) Cedar Grove: Bell is a 6’2″, 217 lb. prospect with offers from Georgia State and Miami-OH. He earned a Michigan offer when he camped in Ann Arbor on June 21.

Ellis Brooks – LB – Richmond (VA) Benedictine: Brooks is a 6’2″, 233 lb. prospect who was previously committed to Duke. He also has offers from Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Virginia, and Virginia Tech, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #21 outside linebacker, and #309 overall.

Hunter Echols – DE – Los Angeles (CA) Cathedral: Echols is a 6’3″, 231 lb. prospect who committed to UCLA in February; he also has offers from Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, and USC, just to name a few. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #6 weakside end, and #90 overall. He insists that he’s solid to UCLA, but solid commits don’t generally pay their own way to travel from California to Michigan. He camped at the Shine Time Camp on Monday.

Darnell Ewell – DT – Norfolk (VA) Lake Taylor: Ewell is a 6’4″, 295 lb. prospect with offers from virtually every elite program across the country. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #9 defensive tackle, and #145 overall. He recently named an ordered top ten that included Michigan at #2, just behind Ohio State. He’ll be visiting on June 26.

Hit the jump for several more visitors and campers.

2017 Recruiting Update: May 25, 2016

Robert Porcher 956x

Robert Porcher III and Robert Porcher IV (image via Twitter)

This has nothing to do with 2017 recruiting, but I finalized the TTB Ratings for the 2016 class on Monday (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017
Grenada (MS) Grenada safety C.J. Avery was offered by Michigan. Avery is a 6’1″, 198 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, and Stanford, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #19 safety, and #198 overall. As a junior in 2015, he made 76 tackles, 5 INTs, and 1 fumble return for a TD. He’s an aggressive safety who high-points the ball well and is a pretty vicious hitter.

Richmond (VA) Benedictine linebacker Ellis Brooks decommitted from Duke. He’s a 6’2″, 233 lb. prospect with offers from North Carolina, Notre Dame, Pitt, and South Carolina, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #16 outside linebacker, and #230 overall. Duke doesn’t typically recruit well, so Brooks was their top commit in 2017; he was also a teammate of the Blue Devils’ highest rated signee in 2016, wide receiver Scott Bracey.

Orlando (FL) Dr. Phillips defensive end Robert Porcher IV was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 245 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Mississippi State, USC, and Virginia Tech, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #58 weakside end, and #1334 overall. As a junior in 2015, he made 92 tackles, 32 TFLs, and 11 sacks. He’s the son of former Detroit Lions defensive end Robert Porcher, and he attends a school that Michigan recruited pretty heavily during the Rich Rodriguez era (Demetrius Hart, Ricardo Miller, etc.). Despite a high level of productivity, Porcher does not seem to be a standout athletically, and I think he’s pretty accurately ranked as a so-so 3-star.

Hit the jump for a few more bits and pieces of 2017 recruiting.
