8-1-17 Recruiting Update: The Color Purple

Shayne Simon

A note on programming: Today marks the beginning of football practice for our program, which means I’m going to be super-busy for the remainder of the fall. I will be continuing to post, but my responsibilities have expanded, so don’t be offended or dismayed if I’m not around quite as much.

COMMITMENTS

Louisville (KY) Trinity defensive end Stephen Herron, Jr., a 2019 prospect, committed to Michigan (LINK).

Indianapolis (IN) Lawrence Central linebacker Cameron McGrone committed to Michigan. I haven’t had time to write up a commitment post yet.

Hamden (CT) Hamden Hall tight end Luke Schoonmaker committed to Michigan (LINK).

OFF THE BOARD

Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei offensive tackle Tommy Brown committed to Alabama. He plays on the line for 2019 quarterback J.T. Daniels, who visited Michigan this past weekend. At one time Brown was thought to be a Michigan lean.

Hit the jump for several other guys who went off the board.

6-19-17 Recruiting Update: Is there an echo in here?

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2018

Gardena (CA) Junipero Serra wide receiver Bryan Addison was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’3″, 172 lb. prospect with offers from Nebraska, Oregon, UCLA, and USC, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #9 athlete, and #221 overall. Addison could play receiver or safety at the next level. It’s next to impossible to pull someone from Junipero Serra since it’s USC territory, but miracles can happen . . . right?

Long Beach (CA) Poly quarterback Matt Corral decommitted from USC. I broke him down in my preview of 2018 quarterback recruiting (LINK), ranking him #2 of Michigan’s offers at the time. He’s a 4-star, the #2 pro-style quarterback, and #17 overall. Alabama, Florida, and Georgia have risen up on his list, and it’s not clear right now whether Michigan will pursue him or not.

Hit the jump for a couple more new offers and some other tidbits.

Scouting Report: 2018 Quarterbacks

Dorian Thompson-Robinson (image via USA Today)

Since quarterback is such an important position in the game of football, I like to take a hard look at whom Michigan is recruiting in each class. I actually started this post a couple weeks ago, but with all the film watching and such, it took me a while to complete it. When I evaluate quarterbacks for this piece, I think about how well they would fit in the offense that I expect Michigan to run. With that being said, there’s some uncertainty going forward with talk that Jim Harbaugh wants more athletic quarterbacks and an offense that employs more wide receivers than we have seen in the past. Harbaugh did have success with a more spread-oriented offense as the San Francisco 49ers head coach, so I tried to keep that in mind when putting together this list.

Below is an in-depth look at the eleven quarterbacks Michigan has offered in the 2018 class, in order of my preferenc:

1. Trevor Lawrence – QB – Cartersville (GA) Cartersville: Lawrence is a 6’6″, 196 lb. prospect who committed to Clemson in December of 2016. He’s also a U.S. Army All-American and the #1 overall player in the country. Lawrence is probably the most “college ready” quarterback on this list. A pro-style guy, he has the size, footwork, arm strength, and accuracy to be deserving of his ranking. The thing that probably sets him apart is his intelligence and pre-snap reads. Lawrence does a great job of identifying coverages and getting rid of the ball quickly when he has an opportunity. In that sense I think he has a little bit of Peyton Manning in him; he’s a very cerebral quarterback. Lawrence isn’t a great athlete and I’m sure the Clemson offense will look different with Lawrence than it did with Deshaun Watson, but he still should be able to command that offense well.

Hit the jump for the rest of the list.
