Snapshots: SMU “Mesh” Concept vs. Texas State

One of the best matchups of the weekend was the SMU Mustangs vs. the Texas State Bobcats. Even though Texas State has some of the most atrocious uniforms in the country, they both have interesting spread offenses.

I mainly watched to get a feel for Texas State head coach Jake Spavital, who’s a young up-and-comer in his second year as a head man (formerly OC and/or QB coach at places like Cal, Texas A&M, and West Virginia). He was matched up against SMU and head coach Sonny Dykes, his former boss.

I actually came away from the game wanting to break down a pretty simple play, because I didn’t see a ton of “innovation” or new looks this weekend like I did last week with Austin Peay (LINK).

Hit the jump for the rest of the play.

Michigan vs. SMU Awards

Donovan Peoples-Jones (image via Michigan Daily)

Let’s see more of this guy on offense . . . Karan Higdon. Higdon was a game-time decision in this game, and he ended up sitting out the contest. The Wolverines struggled to run the football, even if the overall numbers ended up okay due to SMU wearing down in the second half. Leading rusher Chris Evans had 18 carries for 85 to lead the team, but his day ended with his game-high 35-yard run in the third quarter, which saw him grab his right hamstring area and go down. Whether it was a cramp (hopefully) or a hamstring tear, it left Michigan with walk-on Tru Wilson and sophomore O’Maury Samuels handling the load for the remainder of the game. Higdon should be back for next week if he was a game-time decision two days ago, but Michigan needs him back.

What is targeting?

Khaleke Hudson

I have seen a lot of arguments popping up about how bad of a call it was to send Khaleke Hudson to the locker room for targeting SMU quarterback William Brown on Saturday. I argued with people on Twitter for a while, which is never a good idea, so I don’t know why I wasted my time.

But this is a great place to waste some of my time, so here I go:

Michigan 45, SMU 20

Donovan Peoples-Jones had his breakout game. I predicted a breakout game for Peoples-Jones with 100+ yards and a touchdown, but it was even better than that. He caught 4 passes for 90 yards and 3 touchdowns. I did not think SMU’s secondary would match up well with Peoples-Jones, and they didn’t. He had his way with their defensive backs all day, and the only thing that prevented him from going off even more was questionable offensive line play. I don’t think Peoples-Jones will get a lot of opportunities to have days like this due to the offensive line and a questionable offensive philosophy altogether, so let’s enjoy these 90-yard days while we can.

Hit the jump for the rest of my quick thoughts on the game.
