Recruiting Update: May 12, 2014

Newport (WA) Newport offensive guard
Calvin Throckmorton

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2015
Newport (WA) Newport offensive guard Calvin Throckmorton was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’5″, 268 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona, Miami, Oregon, Washington, and Washington State, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #58 offensive tackle, and #521 overall. I can only find his sophomore highlights, but he while he’s listed as a tackle by some recruiting websites, I believe his feet are a little too heavy and he will probably end up playing guard at the next level. Throckmorton mentioned that he would like to visit Michigan this summer and hopes to decide before his senior season.

OFF THE BOARD
Pittsburgh (PA) Baldwin offensive tackle Sterling Jenkins committed to Penn State. At one time Jenkins was considered a Michigan lean, but the hiring of James Franklin as head coach gave the Nittany Lions a lot of momentum. On the same day Jenkins announced, Jersey City (NJ) St. Peter’s Prep quarterback Brandon Wimbush announced for Penn State, too. Wimbush had been under consideration for a Michigan offer, although the Wolverines have dragged their feet on offering new quarterbacks for the 2015 class. They have not been shy about offering committed prospects (such as Blake Barnett and David Sills), but at some point, you probably have to jump into a recruitment that isn’t already “finalized.”

MISCELLANEOUS
Many Michigan fans are fretting about recruiting at this point, in part because Penn State is off to such a hot start. It’s important to remember that Michigan was in Penn State’s boat last year. The Wolverines had the top recruiting class or one of the top few recruiting classes on several sites last year, but other schools flew past as Michigan slowed down. Part of that may have been due to the Wolverines’ mediocre season, but it was also a product of Michigan having just 16 scholarships to give in the 2014 class. The just completed 2014 NFL Draft gives the coaches some ammunition because they can point to the #11 and #95 overall picks both coming from Michigan, not to mention record-setting wide receiver Jeremy Gallon, who went #244 overall in large part due to his size.

Here’s a working list of players Michigan’s coaches have been visiting this month.

Last week on Recruiting Season, I profiled Dakota’s Daniel Crawford, St. Johns’ Austin Ervin, Harrison’s Michael Ojemudia, West Bloomfield’s Eddie Wilson, and East English Village’s Anton Curtis.

Visitors: Michigan vs. Ohio State

Joshua Alabi – DT – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Alabi is a 6’5″, 270 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Tennessee, and others. The Volunteers appear to be the early favorite. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, #29 OT, and #270 overall. UPDATE: Alabi will be headed to MSU instead.

Jason Alessi – S – Birmingham (MI) Brother Rice: Alessi is a 6’0″, 170 lb. prospect for 2014 with offers from Air Force, Akron, Harvard, and Yale. He’s committed to Michigan as a lacrosse player but was recently offered a preferred walk-on spot with the Wolverines. (Highlights.)

Trevon Avery – CB – Grand Blanc (MI) Grand Blanc: Avery is a 6’1″, 165 lb. prospect for 2015 with no offers at this time. He’s a 3-star quarterback to Scout. He’s also the younger brother of Michigan senior defensive back Courtney Avery.

Jerome Baker – LB – Cleveland (OH) St. Benedictine: Baker is a 6’1″, 205 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Florida, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, and Tennessee, among others. He recently declared Ohio State his clear #1, and it would be a huge surprise if he went anywhere else. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, #6 ATH, and #66 overall. (Highlights.)

Kei Beckham – CB – Trotwood (OH) Trotwood-Madison:
Beckham is a 6’0″, 155 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Cincinnati, Illinois, and Kentucky, among others. He’s a former teammate of Michigan freshman defensive back Reon Dawson and linebacker Mike McCray. (Highlights.)

Ian Bunting – TE – Hinsdale (IL) Central: Bunting committed to Michigan in April.

George Campbell – WR – Tarpon Springs (FL) East Lake: Campbell committed to Michigan in August.

Freddy Canteen – WR – Elkton (MD) Eastern Christian Academy: Canteen committed to Michigan in June.

Stefan Claiborne – WR – Clinton Township (MI) Chippewa Valley: Claiborne is a 6’1″, 168 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He also visited Ann Arbor a couple weeks ago for the Nebraska game. (Highlights.)

Brian Cole – WR – Saginaw (MI) Heritage: Cole is a 6’2″, 190 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Tennessee, among others. Rumors keep swirling about him going back and forth between favoring Michigan and MSU, so it’s anybody’s guess right now. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, #5 ATH, and #58 overall. (Highlights.)

Mason Cole – OG – Tarpon Springs (FL) East Lake: Cole committed to Michigan back in February.

C.J. Conrad – TE – La Grange (OH) Keystone: Conrad is a 6’5″, 225 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Duke, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, #8 TE, and #228 overall. As a junior in 2013, he had 59 receptions for 924 yards and 14 touchdowns. (Highlights.)

Jashon Cornell – DE – St. Paul (MN) Cretin-Derham Hall: Cornell is a 6’4″, 245 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from just about everywhere. He’s a 247 Composite 5-star, #1 WDE, and #15 overall. So far he’s the only weakside end Michigan has offered in the class of 2015, and that appears to be purposeful as Michigan pursues him as their #1 guy. Cretin Derham is known for sending guys to Notre Dame, but they’ve had a number of elite recruits in recent years (Michael Floyd, James Onwualu, Seantrel Henderson) so it’s worth keeping up a good relationship. (Highlights.)

Shaun Crawford – CB – Lakewood (OH) St. Edward: Crawford committed to Michigan in August. UPDATE: Crawford can no longer attend the game.

Andrew David – K – Massillon (OH) Washington: David committed to Michigan in June.

Messiah DeWeaver – QB – Trotwood (OH) Trotwood-Madison: DeWeaver is a 6’2″, 180 lb. prospect for 2016 with an offer from Louisville. He has visited Michigan several times and camped in Ann Arbor this past June. He attends the alma mater of current Michigan linebacker Michael McCray. (Highlights.)

David Edwards – QB – Downers Grove (IL) North: Edwards is a 6’6″, 225 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Illinois, Indiana, Syracuse, and Vanderbilt. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, #42 ATH, and #348 overall. Michigan is looking at him partially as a quarterback, but he also might be a tight end, and I think that’s the position where Edwards would be more likely to find a slot from Michigan, in my opinion. (Highlights.)

Brendan Ferns – LB – St. Clairsville (OH) St. Clairsville: Ferns is a 6’3″, 208 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He’s the younger brother of 2014 Michigan linebacker commit Michael Ferns.

Michael Ferns III – LB – St. Clairsville (OH) St. Clairsville: Ferns committed to Michigan in August of last year.

Jimmy Fitzgerald – QB – Champaign (IL) Centennial: Fitzgerald is a 6’3″, 205 lb. prospect for 2015 with a lone FBS offer from Illinois. As a sophomore in 2012, he completed 96/195 passes for 1,300 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, #26 pro-style QB, and #529 overall. Fitzgerald is one of the handful of quarterbacks that have been in touch with Michigan’s coaching staff.

Desmond Fitzpatrick – WR – Farmington (MI) Farmington: Fitzpatrick is a 6’0″, 170 lb. prospect for 2016 with offers from Indiana, Ohio, and Toledo. He has visited Michigan a couple times this season and also camped in Ann Arbor last June. (Highlights.)

Zach Gentry – QB – Albuquerque (NM) Eldorado: Gentry is a 6’6″, 215 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Louisville, New Mexico, New Mexico State, and San Diego State.

Lawrence Gordon – DE – Saginaw (MI) Arthur Hill: Gordon is a 6’5″, 230 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He has visited Michigan a couple times and appears to be one of the top few in-state prospects for his class.

Dele Harding – LB – Elkton (MD) Eastern Christian Academy: Harding is a 6’1″, 218 lb. prospect for 2016 with offers from UMass, Tennessee, and USC. He’s a teammate of 2014 Michigan commits Freddy Canteen and Brandon Watson. He visited Ann Arbor with his teammates back in July and genuinely seemed interested in Michigan at the time those two committed, partly because Michigan’s coaches intimated to him that he would be offered down the road but felt it was too early to offer many 2016 guys.

Damien Harris – RB – Berea (KY) Madison Southern: Harris committed to Michigan in August. He is having an outstanding junior season and was recently ranked the #17 overall prospect in his class by ESPN.

Drake Harris – WR – Grand Rapids (MI) Christian: Harris committed to Michigan in April. He did not play during his senior season due to a serious hamstring injury suffered in the preseason.

Daelin Hayes – LB – Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s: Hayes is a 6’2″, 210 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. The younger brother of Michigan redshirt sophomore running back Justice Hayes, Daelin has visited Penn State and Notre Dame in recent weeks and appears enamored with those squads. The fact that his brother is mostly buried on the depth chart probably does not help.

Lavert Hill – CB – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Hill is a 5’11”, 165 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He’s the younger brother of Michigan freshman safety Delano Hill. He has visited Michigan for most home games this year.

Justin Hilliard – LB – Cincinnati (OH) St. Xavier: Hilliard is a 6’2″, 225 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Alabama, Iowa, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. His brother C.J. Hilliard is a 2014 commit to the Hawkeyes. I did a scouting report on Hilliard a couple weeks ago.

Elijah Holyfield – RB – Atlanta (GA) Woodward Academy: Holyfield is a 5’11”, 190 lb. prospect for 2016 with a lone offer from Boston College. As a freshman in 2012, he had 66 carries for 645 yards and 10 touchdowns. He’s the son of famed boxer Evander Holyfield. (Highlights.) UPDATE: Holyfield no longer plans to attend.

Joshua Jackson – WR – Saline (MI) Saline: Jackson is a 6’1″, 180 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He’s the younger brother of Michigan senior wideout Jeremy Jackson and the son of running backs coach Fred Jackson.

Sterling Jenkins – OT – Pittsburgh (PA) Baldwin: Jenkins is a 6’8″, 305 lb. prospect for 2015. I did a scouting report on him a few weeks ago.

Nick Johns – QB – Washington (DC) Gonzaga: Johns is a 6’3″, 215 lb. prospect for 2015 with an offer from Virginia. He’s another on the short list of quarterbacks Michigan has been in contact with for the upcoming recruiting cycle. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, #30 pro-style QB, and #575 overall. (Highlights.)

Tyree Kinnel – S – Huber Heights (OH) Wayne: Kinnel committed to Michigan in August.

Darrin Kirkland, Jr. – LB – Indianapolis (IN) Lawrence Central: Kirkland is a 6’2″, 215 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Illinois, Indiana, Louisville, Northwestern, and Virginia Tech, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, #9 ILB, and #245 overall. He also visited for the Nebraska game. (Highlights.)

Thiyo Lukusa – OT – Traverse City (MI) West: Lukusa is a 6’5″, 300 lb. prospect for 2016 with an offer from Michigan State. He has visited Michigan a couple times this season and also camped in Ann Arbor in June. (Highlights.) UPDATE: Lukusa is no longer planning to attend.

Kendric Mallory – WR – Trotwood (OH) Trotwood-Madison: Mallory is a 6’2″, 175 lb. prospect for 2014 with an offer from Illinois. He’s also the former teammate of Reon Dawson and Mike McCray.

Corey Malone-Hatcher – DE – St. Joseph (MI) St. Joseph: Malone-Hatcher is a 6’3″, 205 lb. prospect for 2017 with no offers at this time.

Alex Malzone – QB – Birmingham (MI) Brother Rice: Malzone is a 6’2″, 185 lb. prospect for 2015 with an offer from Bowling Green. He’s perhaps Michigan’s top in-state quarterback target for the class, but likely a second-level option if other national targets don’t pan out. (Highlights.)

Lawrence Marshall – DE – Southfield (MI) Southfield: Marshall committed to Michigan in May. Earlier in the spring, he had been committed to Ohio State.

Jalen Martin – WR – Harper Woods (MI) Chandler Park Academy: Martin is a 6’2″, 180 lb. prospect for 2016 with a lone offer from Eastern Michigan. He attends the alma mater of Michigan freshman wide receiver Csont’e York.

Ostell Martin – OT – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Martin is a 6’5″, 315 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He visited Michigan’s campus a couple times back in the spring.

Malik McDowell – DE – Southfield (MI) Southfield: McDowell is a 6’7″, 290 lb. prospect for 2014 with offers from all over the country. He has alternately been rumored to be a Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and USC lean, but the current vibe is that Michigan would be the choice if he picked today.

Tanner Muse – LB – Belmont (NC) South Point: Muse is a 6’3″, 207 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Clemson, Michigan, North Carolina, and North Carolina State, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, #17 safety, and #297 overall, although I believe he’ll be a linebacker in college. UPDATE: Muse no longer plans to attend.

Michael Onwenu – DT – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Onwenu is a 6’2″, 310 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time.

Brady Pallante – DT – Naples (FL) Barron Collier: Pallante committed to Michigan in April as a greyshirt and became a full scholarship member of the 2014 class earlier this week.

Jacques Patrick – RB – Orlando (FL) Timber Creek: Patrick is a 6’1″, 210 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC, Wisconsin, and numerous others. He claims a 4.51 forty and is a 247 Composite 4-star, #7 RB, and #82 overall. As a sophomore in 2012, he had 231 carries for 2,032 yards and 29 touchdowns. It will likely be an in-state battle for his services, but he was excited about his Michigan offer and has a cousin coaching at Detroit King. (Highlights.) UPDATE: Patrick can no longer attend the game.

Donovan Peoples-Jones – WR – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Peoples-Jones is a 6’1″, 170 lb. prospect for 2017 with no offers at this time.

Jabrill Peppers – CB – Paramus (NJ) Catholic: Peppers committed to Michigan in May. He’s in the midst of an outstanding senior season and was named 247 Sports’ #3 overall player. UPDATE: Peppers’ playoff practice schedule will prevent him from visiting this weekend.

Martell Pettaway – RB – St. Clair Shores (MI) South Lake: Pettaway is a 5’9″, 185 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He has visited Michigan several times early in the process. (Highlights.)

Giovanni Rescigno – QB – Warren (MI) De La Salle: Rescigno is a 6’4″, 210 lb. prospect for 2014. He has no scholarship offers but was recently offered a preferred walk-on spot with the Wolverines. He has visited several times and is the teammate of 2014 Michigan commit Jared Wangler and best friends with freshman QB Shane Morris.

Darian Roseboro – DE – Lincolnton (NC) Lincolnton: Roseboro is a 6’4″, 265 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Auburn, Clemson, Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Ohio State, and Tennessee, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, #7 SDE, and #97 overall. UPDATE: Roseboro can no longer attend the game.

Joshua Ross – LB – Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s: Ross is a 6’2″, 190 lb. prospect for 2017 with offers from Oklahoma and Michigan State. He’s the younger brother of Michigan sophomore linebacker James Ross.

Tommy Roush – OG – Traverse City (MI) West: Roush is a 6’3″, 270 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He camped at Michigan back in June and also visited for a game earlier this season.

Prince Sammons – DE – Cincinnati (OH) Hills Christian Academy: Sammons is a 6’8″, 260 lb. prospect for 2016 with an offer from Cincinnati.

Wilton Speight – QB – Richmond (VA) Collegiate: Speight committed to Michigan in February. He recently completed a solid season.

Erik Swenson – OT – Downers Grove (IL) South: Swenson is a 6’7″, 285 lb. prospect for 2016 with offers from Illinois, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. He has long declared Michigan his leader. (Highlights.)

Demetric Vance – WR – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Vance is a 6’1″, 170 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He has garnered some hype for being perhaps the best wide receiver prospect out of Cass Tech in a while, but he still has a couple years to develop.

Jared Wangler – LB – Warren (MI) De La Salle: Wangler committed to Michigan in August.

Brandon Watson – CB – Elkton (MD) Eastern Christian Academy: Watson committed to Michigan in June.

Maurice Ways – WR – Detroit (MI) Country Day: Ways committed to Michigan in April. Here’s a look at how his senior season went.

Mike Weber – RB – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Weber is a 5’10”, 195 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, and Tennessee. Michigan was the early favorite, but he seems to be leaning toward MSU after fellow 2015 running back Damien Harris committed to Michigan a few months ago. (Highlights.) UPDATE: Weber is no longer able to attend the game.

Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. – TE – Manlius (NY) Canisius: Wheatley is a 6’6″, 235 lb. prospect for 2016 with offers from Alabama, Michigan, Penn State, and others. He’s the son of Tyrone Wheatley, a former Michigan and NFL running back who is the current running backs coach for the Buffalo Bills. The presumed favorite is the Wolverines.

Jhonny Williams – DE – Berrien Springs (MI) Berrien Springs: Williams is a 6’6″, 237 lb. prospect for 2014 who is committed to Missouri. He has also received a Notre Dame offer, and while Michigan’s offer is intriguing, it seems that his choice will come down to Mizzou or the Fighting Irish. (Highlights.) UPDATE: Williams will not be in attendance, and he changed his commitment to the Fighting Irish.

Mykelti Williams – S – Indianapolis (IN) Warren Central: Williams is a 6’0″, 195 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Akron, Indiana, and Ole Miss. He claims a 4.5 forty and is a 247 Composite 3-star, #35 safety, and #565 overall. (Highlights.)

Reagan Williams – LB – Jackson (OH) Jackson: Williams is a 6’3″, 232 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Kent State and Ohio. As a sophomore in 2012, he had 94 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, and 4 sacks. (Highlights.)

Khari Willis – RB – Jackson (MI) Lumen Christi: Willis is a 6’0″, 187 lb. prospect for 2015 with no offers at this time. (Highlights.)

Chase Winovich – LB – Clairton (PA) Thomas Jefferson: Winovich committed to Michigan in June. He just completed an impressive senior season of playing quarterback and linebacker.

Scouting Report: Sterling Jenkins

Pittsburgh (PA) Baldwin offensive tackle Sterling Jenkins (image via Twitter)

Name: Sterling Jenkins
Height: 6’8″
Weight: 305 lbs.
High school: Pittsburgh (PA) Baldwin
Position: Offensive tackle
Class: 2015

Notes: Holds offers from Michigan, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Toledo, Virginia, and West Virginia . . . ESPN 4-star, 82 grade, #6 OT, #75 overall . . . Rivals 4-star OT . . . Scout 4-star, #4 OT . . . 247 Sports 4-star, 95 grade, #6 OT, #84 overall . . . Attends alma mater of former Michigan All-Big Ten lineman Damon Denson

Strengths: Long, lean frame despite already being 305 lbs. . . . Pass protects with a nice, wide base and low center of gravity . . . Displays ability to kick set quickly and maintain good posture . . . Shows active feet and ability to shuffle laterally with defenders . . . Can be an overpowering blocker . . . Difficult for defenders to disengage from once he latches on

Weaknesses: Could improve initial punch to neutralize pass rushers . . . Needs to keep elbows tighter to body and inside frame to increase punch power . . . Run blocks with a rounded back . . . Bends at the waist when releasing to second-level blocks, decreasing his lateral mobility . . . Base can get narrow in run blocking mode

Projection: Left tackle. Jenkins has the natural ability to play blindside tackle at the next level, although he lacks the natural athleticism of the truly elite left tackle prospects. He struggles to bend at the knees consistently, which prevents him from gaining maximum leverage and turning into an absolutely dominant run blocker; that would likely prevent him from playing guard at the next level, especially in a power blocking scheme like Brady Hoke supposedly intends to run. At this stage, Jenkins is a more advanced pass blocker than run blocker. Once he develops his upper and lower body strength, he could turn into a 6’8″, 320 lb. all-conference-level tackle.

Reminds me of: Erik Magnuson.

Likelihood of choosing Michigan: 247’s Crystal Ball has him at 89% Michigan and 11% Ohio State. He visited Michigan in late July, and the coaches appear to be holding off a little bit in pursuit of other 2015 linemen because they seem fairly confident that Jenkins will choose the Wolverines.

Highlights: Jenkins has some highlights from his junior season up on Hudl.

2013 BBQ at the Big House Visitors

Gardena (CA) Junipero Serra cornerback Adoree’ Jackson

The BBQ at the Big House is a recruiting event that was started by former Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez. Rather than having a junior day or Friday Night Lights type of event, the coaches host players for a BBQ in July. This year’s event will take place on July 27 (for 2015/2016 prospects) and July 28 (for 2014 prospects). Here’s a list of the players who have said they’ll be at the BBQ:

Joshua Alabi – DT – Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Alabi is a 6’4″, 260 lb. prospect for 2015. He has offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, among others.  247 Sports ranks him as the #26 offensive tackle and #229 player overall.

Jerome Baker – LB – Cleveland (OH) Benedictine: Baker is a 6’1″, 205 lb. weakside linebacker prospect with offers from Florida, Illinois, and Ohio State, among others. According to 247’s Composite ranking, he’s a 4-star, the #7 athlete, and #94 player overall.

Kalen Ballage – RB – Peyton (CO) Falcon: I wrote up a scouting report on Ballage in May. UPDATE: Ballage will not be able to make the BBQ trip but plans to take an official visit to Michigan.

Ian Bunting – TE – Hinsdale (IL) Central: Bunting committed to Michigan back in April.

George Campbell, Jr. – WR – Tarpon Springs (FL) East Lake: Campbell is a 6’3″, 184 lb. prospect for 2015. He has offers from Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M, among others. As a sophomore in 2012, he had 30 receptions for 766 yards and 5 touchdowns. He’s teammates with Michigan commit Mason Cole and Michigan target Artavis Scott (see below). According to 247 Sports, Campbell is a 5-star, the #1 wide receiver, and the #16 overall player.

Freddy Canteen – WR – Elkton (MD) Eastern Christian Academy: Canteen committed to Michigan in June.

Brian Cole – WR – Saginaw (MI) Heritage: Cole is a 6’2″, 190 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Tennessee. Michigan is recruiting him for wide receiver and appears to be the front runner. According to 247 Sports, he’s a 4-star, the #9 cornerback, and #72 player overall.

Mason Cole – OG – Tarpon Springs (FL) East Lake: Cole committed to Michigan in February. He has been selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Shaun Crawford – CB – Lakewood (OH) St. Edward: Crawford is a 5’9″, 165 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Arkansas, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Tennessee, among others. He claims a 4.51 forty and as a sophomore in 2012, he had 66 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 interceptions, 3 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery.

Messiah DeWeaver – QB – Trotwood (OH) Trotwood-Madison: DeWeaver is a 6’2″, 180 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He camped at Michigan in June. He was a teammate with incoming freshman linebacker Mike McCray II.

David Edwards – QB – Downers Grove (IL) North: Edwards is a 6’6″, 225 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Illinois and Vanderbilt. As a sophomore in 2012, he had 502 passing yards for 3 touchdowns, along with 719 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns.

Michael Ferns III – LB – St. Clairsville (OH) St. Clairsville: Ferns committed to Michigan last August.

Desmond Fitzpatrick – WR – Farmington (MI) Farmington: Fitzpatrick is a 5’11”, 165 lb. prospect for 2016 offers from Indiana, Ohio, and Toledo. He played for Farmington Harrison last season, but is transferring to Farmington High for the coming year.

Leonard Fournette – RB – New Orleans (LA) St. Augustine: Fournette is a 6’1″, 225 lb. prospect with offers from just about everyone; his two leaders appear to be Alabama and LSU. Michigan was not mentioned in regard to Fournette until Jabrill Peppers committed and started talking to and about him being a part of Michigan’s class. According to 247’s Composite ranking, Fournette is the #1 player in the entire class. As a junior in 2012, he had 196 carries for 2,136 yards and 31 touchdowns. That’s 10.9 yards/carry. Chances are slim that Michigan jumps in front of those two SEC schools, but it can’t hurt to get him on campus. There’s a chance that he might really like it, and it puts Ann Arbor in the minds of other top prospects.

Noah Furbush – LB – Kenton (OH) Kenton: Furbush committed to Michigan at the beginning of July.

Da’Shawn Hand – DE – Woodbridge (VA) Woodbridge: I wrote up a scouting report on Hand back in February. He recently announced a top three that included Michigan and eliminated long-time favorite Virginia Tech. UPDATE: Hand will not be able to make the visit.

Dele Harding – LB – Elkton (MD) Eastern Christian Academy: Harding is a 6’1″, 218 lb. prospect for 2016 with offers from Massachusetts, Tennessee, and USC. He’s the teammate of Michigan commits Brandon Watson and Freddy Canteen. Harding camped at Michigan back in June and was told by Michigan’s coaches that he would probably be offered down the road, but it’s still pretty early for the class of 2016.

Drake Harris – WR – Grand Rapids (MI) Christian: Harris committed to Michigan in April.

Justin Hilliard – LB – Cincinnati (OH) St. Xavier: Hilliard is a 6’2″, 225 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Arkansas, Iowa, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. As a sophomore in 2012, he had 65 tackles, 7 sacks, 2 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble. It’s still fairly early, but in my opinion, Hilliard is the best Ohio player in his class.

Jonathan Hilliman – RB – Jersey City (NJ) St. Peters Prep: I wrote up a scouting report on Hilliman back in December. He recently announced Ohio State as his favorite. UPDATE: Hilliman is no longer planning to attend the event.

Corey Holmes – WR – Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas: I wrote up a scouting report on Holmes a few months ago. He declared Michigan as his leader early, but the Wolverines seem to have faded, perhaps by their choice. It seems like Michigan has been pursuing some other wide receiver targets harder. UPDATE: Holmes committed to Notre Dame and will not visit Michigan.

Adoree’ Jackson – CB – Junipero (CA) Gardena Serra: I wrote up a scouting report on Jackson back in March. He has aspirations in track and field, so while he likes Michigan, it might be tough to keep him away from schools that have better track programs. UPDATE: Jackson likely will not visit at this point.

Van Jefferson – WR – Brentwood (TN) Ravenwood: Jefferson is a 6’2″, 164 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Middle Tennessee State, Penn State, and Vanderbilt. He used to attend Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s and is the son of former Detroit Lions wideout and current Tennessee Titans wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson. The elder Jefferson attended Central Florida, in case you were wondering. UPDATE: Jefferson no longer plans to attend the BBQ.

Sterling Jenkins – OT – Pittsburgh (PA) Baldwin: Jenkins is a 6’8″, 305 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and Pitt, among others. According to 247 Sports, he’s a 4-star, the #7 offensive tackle, and the #86 overall player in his class.

Tyree Kinnel – S – Huber Heights (OH) Wayne: Kinnel is a 6’0″, 190 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Arkansas and Kentucky. He has visited Michigan numerous times and is getting a bit antsy for an offer, but the fact that he keeps visiting Ann Arbor suggests that he really likes the Wolverines.

Marshon Lattimore – WR – Cleveland (OH) Glenville: Lattimore is a 6’0″, 175 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, and USC, among others. According to 247’s Composite ranking, he’s a 5-star, the #5 cornerback, and the #32 overall player in the country. Almost everyone expects him to pick Ohio State eventually, but he was invited to the BBQ and is considering attending, so there will be a chance to sway him.

Thiyo Lukusa – OG – Traverse City (MI) West: Lukusa is a 6’5″, 300 lb. prospect for the class of 2016. He has no offers at this time.

Lawrence Marshall – DE – Southfield (MI) Southfield: Marshall committed to Michigan in May.

Osa Masina – LB – Salt Lake City (UT) Brighton: Masina is a 6’4″, 207 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Michigan, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wisconsin, along with several others. He has a brother at Utah and the Utes appear to be Osa’s favorite. According to 247 Sports, he’s a 4-star, the #17 athlete, and the #206 overall player in his class.

Malik McDowell – DE – Detroit (MI) Loyola: McDowell is a 6’7″, 290 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and numerous others. According to 247’s Composite ranking, he’s a 5-star, the #3 strongside end, and the #33 player overall. He is attempting to transfer to Southfield and become teammates with Lawrence Marshall, but that hasn’t been finalized yet.

Riley Neal – QB – Yorktown (IN) Yorktown: Neal is a 6’5″, 200 lb. prospect for 2015 with no offers at this point. He had 1,700 yards and 15 passing touchdowns as a sophomore in 2012.

Montae Nicholson – S – Monroeville (PA) Gateway: Nicholson is a 6’3″, 200 lb. prospect with offers from Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Stanford, and Virginia Tech, among others. As a junior in 2012, he had 28 tackles, 2 interceptions (both returned for touchdowns), 2 forced fumbles, and 3 fumble recoveries; he also had 25 receptions for 653 yards and 6 touchdowns. He was one of Michigan’s first few offers for the 2014 class after camping in Ann Arbor last summer. While Michigan is recruiting him as a safety, he’s also considering playing wide receiver in college. UPDATE: Nicholson is no longer attending the BBQ.

Darrion Owens – LB – Orange Park (FL) Oakleaf: Owens is a 6’3″, 216 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, and Ohio State, among others. He plays some safety in high school, but Michigan is looking at him as a SAM linebacker. As a junior in 2012, he had 101 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, 6 pass breakups, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery. According to 247’s Composite ranking, he’s a 3-star, the #42 outside linebacker, and the #561 player overall. UPDATE: Owens committed to Miami and said he won’t take other visits.

Tommy Roush – OG – Traverse City (MI) West: Roush is a 6’3″, 270 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He camped at Michigan in June. Roush played for Petoskey (MI) Petosky last fall before transferring.

Artavis Scott – WR – Tarpon Springs (FL) East Lake: Scott is a 5’10”, 175 lb. prospect with offers from Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oregon, among others. As a junior in 2012, he had 64 receptions for 995 yards and 10 touchdowns. According to the 247 Composite rankings, he’s a 4-star, the #8 wide receiver, and the #78 player overall. Many people presume Michigan to be his leader. UPDATE: Scott committed to Clemson and probably will not make it to the BBQ.

Tim Settle – DT – Manassas (VA) Stonewall Jackson: Settle is a 6’3″, 307 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Miami, Ohio State, and Virginia Tech, among others. According to 247 Sports, he’s a 5-star, the #2 defensive tackle, and the #8 player overall for his class. I have seen some questions on whether Michigan is interested in offering Settle, but if you watch his video, I don’t see any reason not to pursue him. UPDATE: Settle, who was supposed to ride with Da’Shawn Hand, will not be able to visit now that Hand isn’t visiting.

Wilton Speight – QB – Richmond (VA) Collegiate: Speight committed to Michigan in February.

Erik Swenson – OT – Downers Grove (IL) South: Swenson is a 6’6″, 285. lb prospect for 2016 with offers from Illinois, Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. Michigan is his stated leader.

Recruiting Update: May 6, 2013

Fort Lauderdale (FL) University School defensive back Quincy Wilson

COMMITMENT
Paramus (NJ) Catholic offensive tackle Juwann Bushell-Beatty committed to Michigan.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2014
New Castle (PA) New Castle athlete Malik Hooker was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’2″, 185 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona, Penn State, Pitt, and West Virginia, among others.  Hooker may not even play football in college, because he’s also an accomplished basketball player (check out this dunk); maybe I’m biased, but at 6’2″ he should probably aim for a football career instead of basketball.  Hooker looks more like a cornerback to me, but some schools are looking at him as a wide receiver.

Fort Lauderdale (FL) University School safety Quincy Wilson was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’2″, 195 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and USC, among others.  According to the 247 Composite ranking, he’s a 4-star, the #18 safety, and the #236 overall prospect.  Wilson claims a 4.6 forty, but I think his physicality lends itself to playing safety at the next level.  His father Chad played for the Miami Hurricanes.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2015

Pittsburgh (PA) Baldwin offensive tackle Sterling Jenkins was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’8″, 305 lb. prospect with offers from Virginia and West Virginia.  He is obviously huge and he moves well for his size, but he needs to add some strength and improve his technique; as a sophomore in high school, those weaknesses are understandable.

Lincolnton (NC) Lincolnton defensive end Darian Roseboro was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’3″, 265 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, North Carolina, and North Carolina State.

Lexington (NC) North Davidson defensive tackle Shy Tuttle was offered by Michigan.  He’s a 6’2″, 308 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Miami, Ohio State, and South Carolina, among others.  There’s been some confusion over whether Tuttle was actually offered when Michigan’s coaches stopped by his school last week, but Rivals lists him with an offer, so I’m going with it.  As a sophomore in 2012, he had 83 tackles, 16 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles.

OFF THE BOARD
Duluth (GA) Peachtree Ridge offensive tackle Orlando Brown committed to Tennessee.  Brown, the son of  the late NFL offensive lineman by the same name, stands 6’7″ and 340 lbs.  Michigan was in his final group of schools, but there was no expectation that he would commit to the Wolverines.

Grand Rapids (MI) Christian center Tommy Doles committed to Northwestern.  For a long time, Doles appeared to be close to committing to Michigan.  However, the longer he held off, it seemed Michigan just wasn’t quite his perfect destination.  There has also been some suggestion that Michigan’s coaching staff started to cool on him.

Highlands Ranch (CO) Valor Christian wide receiver Christian McCaffrey committed to Stanford.  Michigan was recruiting McCaffrey as slot receiver, but he is expected to play running back for the Cardinal.  His father Ed was a long-time NFL wide receiver for the New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Denver Broncos (career: 565 catches, 7422 yards, 55 touchdowns).  The two things I remember most about McCaffrey are a) people saying “Wow, he’s pretty fast for a tall white guy” and b) that ugly broken leg on Monday Night Football.
