Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: David Harris

The New York Jets have a damn good defense, and David Harris is a damn good New York Jets defender. Four years removed from trading up in the second round of the draft to acquire Harris, the Jets must be satisfied with the return on their investment: the 6-2, 250 lb MIKE linebacker has started every game in which he has participated dating back to his rookie season.
On Sunday, Harris helped his team defeat the Buffalo Bills and move into a three-way tie for first place in the AFC East by recording 5 tackles, a pass break-up, a QB hurry and a diving interception. Harris picked off the pass (highlight here) with just under five minutes remaining in the second quarter, allowing the Jets to maintain their 3-0 lead headed into halftime. The Bills, who were averaging 30.1 points per game entering the contest, were far less successful against Harris and his defense in their 27-11 defeat. “It’s huge to be back in the mix,” said Harris. “That was a huge test for us…”
Honorable Mention: Manningham took the lead for the Giants with 4 minutes remaining against the Patriots when he caught a 10-yard score. But then Tom Brady did what Tom Brady does, putting together a two minute comeback touchdown drive. Not to be outdone, Eli Manning did the Patriots wrong–again (see Super Bowl 42). In the game, Manningham scored a touchdown and gained 33 receiving yards. Tom Brady put up 342 passing yards and 2 touchdowns, but turned over the football three times. So I’ll go with Manningham for Honorable Mention, especially sine his team won, 24-20.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Steve Breaston

Pickings were slim this week. Brady put up his standard 350+ yards through the air, but he also threw 4 interceptions – which matched his INT total for all of last season – in a loss to the Bills. Henne finished with a respectable 90.4 QB rating, but it was in a losing effort to the Cleveland Browns on a day when he led his offense to only 16 points. So Breaston gets the nod here with his 3 catches for 55 yards. I hear that yards per catch is one of the more flawed statistics, but an 18. 3YPC is as impressive as anything else that I saw on the stat sheet this week. And even though Breaston’s team the Kansas City Chiefs lost by a score of 20-17 against the Chargers, his 14.5 point underdog team hung a lot tougher than most thought that would after getting shellacked by the Lions in week 2. Still, I hope Breaston’s numbers are a bit more impressive the next time he wins this prestigious award.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Charles Woodson

Charles Woodson saved the game for the Packers in their 30-23 victory over the Panthers by snagging two picks and recovering a fumble. He also made five solo tackles and deflected two passes. The Packers gave up a whopping 432 passing yards to rookie Cam Newton–who also threw for over 400 yards last week in his NFL debut–but Woodson’s 3 takeaways ensured that last year’s Super Bowl champs weren’t upset by last year’s most losing team.
Honorable mention: Tom Brady threw for 423 yards and three touchdowns with zero picks as his high-octaine Patriot offense destroyed my fantasy defense, which made the difference in my week two fantasy defeat. That’s okay, though. He went to Michigan.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Tom Brady

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had a decent game on Monday night.  He finished the victory against the Miami Dolphins with 517 yards on 32-for-48 (66.7%) passing.  He tossed 4 touchdowns and 1 interception.  One of those touchdown passes was a 99-yard pass to Wes Welker.  The Patriots won by a score of 38-24.
Honorable mention: Brady’s opponent in that game was Chad Henne, who had an excellent game as well.  Henne completed 30 out of 49 (61.2%) passes for 416 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception.  He also ran 7 times for 59 yards (8.4 yards per carry) and 1 touchdown.

NFL Draft Review: Michigan-style

Why do I have a picture of Joe Cocozzo?

2ND ROUND
#61.  Michigan linebacker Jonas Mouton was drafted by the San Diego Chargers.  Mouton was the first Michigan player chosen by the Chargers since offensive guard Joe Cocozzo in 1993, who was selected in the third round (#63 overall).

3RD ROUND
#74.  Arkansas quarterback (and former Wolverine) Ryan Mallett was drafted by the New England Patriots.  He has first round talent but an undrafted free agent level of maturity, so he probably couldn’t have asked for a better situation.  Sure, I bet he would have loved first round money, but now he gets to sit behind and learn from Tom Brady for a few years.  If he learns well, he could become a franchise quarterback when Brady moves on or retires.

6TH ROUND
#201.  Michigan offensive lineman Steve Schilling was drafted by the San Diego Chargers.  This is the first time multiple Michigan players have been chosen by one team since . . . 2008, when the Miami Dolphins picked offensive tackle Jake Long in the first round and quarterback Chad Henne in the second.
