2020 Season Countdown: #66 Tyler Cochran

Tyler Cochran

Name: Tyler Cochran
Height:
6’1″
Weight:
206 lbs.
High school:
Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s
Position:
Safety
Class:
Fifth year senior
Jersey number:
#30
Last year:
I ranked Cochran #58 and said he would be a backup safety and special teamer (LINK). He played in twelve games and made 2 tackles and 1 fumble recovery.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Cochran has turned into a steady special teams contributor over the past couple seasons. He has played in 15 games during that span with 3 tackles and 1 fumble recovery, which came last year against Rutgers.

So far Cochran has not played safety in a game, and it’s unlikely that he will this season, either. Michigan brought in a few 2020 scholarship safeties with the new signing class, and there are some talented players already in the program.

Prediction: Backup safety, special teamer

2019 Season Countdown: #58 Tyler Cochran

Tyler Cochran

I just finished reading Brad Thor’s Foreign Agent (LINK):

Name: Tyler Cochran
Height:
6’1″
Weight:
201 lbs.
High school:
Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s
Position:
Safety
Class:
Redshirt junior
Jersey number:
#30
Last year:
I ranked Cochran #112 and said he would be a backup safety and special teamer (LINK). He played in all thirteen games and made 1 tackle.
TTB Rating:
N/A

At first glance it may seem like I have this walk-on safety ranked too high – and maybe I do. But I’ll start off my justification with this: his thirteen games played in 2018 is more than the guys above and below him in the countdown.

Cochran won the Most Improved Special Teams Player of the Year in 2018, and that includes winning over some other guys who had solid years on special teams (Will Hart, Jake McCurry, Ambry Thomas, etc.).

Cochran, the son of Brad Cochran (who played at Michigan from 1981-1985), should see plenty of time on special teams again in 2019.

Prediction: Backup safety, special teamer

2018 Season Countdown: #112 Tyler Cochran

Name: Tyler Cochran
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 190 lbs.
High school: Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s
Position: Safety
Class: Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number: #30
Last year: I did not rank Cochran. He did not see any game action.

Cochran, the son of former Wolverine Brad Cochran – who played with Jim Harbaugh in the 1980s – came to Michigan in 2016 as a preferred walk-on. It can be tough to get on the field as a walk-on skill guy, and that got a little more difficult when Michigan recruited four defensive backs and landed grad transfer Casey Hughes from Utah. I think Cochran is the type of guy who could play on a punt return or kickoff team, but otherwise, he probably won’t see the field much, if at all.

Prediction: Backup safety, special teamer
