How will the 2016 class finish?

How will the 2016 class finish?

One of readers’ favorite questions is: What are your predictions for the rest of the class? While it’s always a fluid situation, and predicting the decisions of high schoolers is a bit of a fool’s errand, I am nothing if not a fool. So here’s my look at the current recruiting class and who could end up filling some additional spots.

The number for each position represents how many players I believe will end up in the class at that position.

QUARTERBACK: 1
Current commits: Brandon Peters
Predicted commits: None

RUNNING BACK: 3
Current commits: Kingston Davis, Chris Evans, Kareem Walker
Predicted commits: None

WIDE RECEIVER: 5
Current commits: Dylan Crawford, Brad Hawkins Jr., Nate Johnson, Ahmir Mitchell
Predicted commits: Eddie McDoom, Donald Stewart

Hit the jump for my predictions for the rest of the class.

TIGHT END: 2
Current commits: Sean McKeon
Predicted commits: Chase Allen

OFFENSIVE LINE: 4
Current commits: Ben Bredeson, Devery Hamilton, Michael Onwenu, Stephen Spanellis
Predicted commits: None

DEFENSIVE TACKLE: 2
Current commits: Jordan Elliott
Predicted commits: Michael Dwumfour, Rashan Gary

DEFENSIVE END: 3
Current commits: Ron Johnson Jr., Carlo Kemp, Joshua Uche, Rashad Weaver
Predicted commits: None

LINEBACKER: 4
Current commits: Devin Bush Jr., Devin Gil, Dytarious Johnson, Elysee Mbem-Bosse
Predicted commits: None

CORNERBACK: 2
Current commits: David Long Jr.
Predicted commits: Lavert Hill

SAFETY: 2
Current commits: Josh Metellus
Predicted commits: Khaleke Hudson

KICKER: 1
Current commits: None
Predicted commits: Quinn Nordin

If you’re not into doing the math, that’s 29 total signees that I expect for National Signing Day. We’ll see how it plays out.

So…I hit publish, checked Twitter, and Michael Dwumfour already made his commitment public.

So no Connor Murphy? And not surprised on Asiasi and Tagaloa, hard to get Cali kids with west coast interest to head east.

I think it’s a tough pull from California to Michigan. West Coast schools have their hooks in them, and I don’t think there’s a huge need for them, anyway.

You have 32 current and predicted commits, not including Dwumfour. 6 WR, 3 DTs, 4 DEs – one more than listed at each. I assume this is because you are saying Elliot, Weaver, and N. Johnson will end up elsewhere (as is being speculated on other websites) but it’s not clear. There’s a couple others who are also getting speculation of not being in the class on signing day but they are correctly included in the positional totals above (D.Johnson, Mettelus).

It’s a bit of a surprise that Allen hasn’t committed yet, fueling speculation that that Asiasi/Tagula (sp? on both) will end up the class. That’s be great IMO, as Asiasi might be able to come in and help replace AJ Williams right away.

Curious what you think of Dwumfour as an OL prospect in the longrun.

I don’t think Asiasi will be coming to Michigan unless we see Allen commit elsewhere.

I think Dwumfour could be an offensive lineman. I don’t really see a need for that, unless Onwenu ends up playing nose tackle.

Thunder, are you saying that the coaching staff prefers Allen to Asiasi? What about you? Who is your preferred TE commit at this point?

No. I’m saying if we see Allen commit elsewhere, that might be a sign that Michigan turned him away for Asiasi.

If kids can stop committing and decommitting at such a high rate, I might be able to put together another one of my If I Had My Druthers posts.

I still will maintain that we don’t take any grayshirt and thus 28 is max. I don’t see anyone in your final 29 that fits the profile of grayshirt. Can you speculate on that?

It would probably be useful to list “predicted departures” under each position.

I think there’s at least one, maybe two, kids who could greyshirt. I don’t like to name names, nor do I like to predict departures. I figure people can probably read between the lines.

Well, we will probably lose Jordan Elliott (you were right about this kid being stupidly fickle), Nate Johnson, and Weaver. Hopely the numbers will work out.

Weaver gone, and it seems like Harbaugh basically left him out to dry. I hope Harbaugh becomes a bit more open with the recruits…
