Preview of 2019 In-State Recruiting: #1-5

I’m going to do things a little bit differently for 2019 than I have before. I started off this series several years ago just listing the big-time prospects within the state, and then I tweaked that by doing my own rankings the last couple classes. While I prefer doing my own rankings, the truth is that I just don’t have the time at this juncture to watch the film and go through the process of ranking each player. Therefore, I’m just going to run through the top players in the 247 Composite with my analysis of their abilities and recruitment. I don’t think my own personal rankings generate enough buzz or eyeballs to warrant making that extra effort

1. Devontae Dobbs – OT – Belleville (MI) Belleville
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 270 lbs.
Notable offers: Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State
Commitment: Uncommitted
247 Composite: 5-star, #1 OT, #9 overall
Analysis: Dobbs is athletic enough to play tackle at the next level, but the question with him is whether he will have the combination of length and bulk to play on the outside in college. It’s not impossible to succeed as a 6’4″ offensive tackle, but usually those guys are taller and longer. If tackle doesn’t work, he could be an excellent pulling guard because of his athleticism. But based on what I’ve seen, I think he’s ranked too highly at #9 overall.

Hit the jump for #2-5.

2019

Karsen Barnhart – OT – Paw Paw (MI) Paw Paw: Barnhart is a 6’4″, 282 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona State, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, and Nebraska, among others. He’s a 3-star, the #46 offensive tackle, and #427 overall. Right now all six Crystal Ball predictions are in favor of the Spartans.

Michael Fletcher – DE – Flint (MI) Carman-Ainsworth: Fletcher is a 6’6″, 240-pounder. He has offers from Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State, and Wisconsin, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #28 strongside end, and #352 overall. Right now his Crystal Ball situation is 57% for Michigan State, 43% for Michigan.

Rod Heard – CB – Farmington Hills (MI) Harrison: Heard is 5’10”, 170 lbs. and committed to Northwestern last week. He’s a 3-star, the #89 cornerback, #918 overall, and #24 in the state. It’s unclear if he still plans to visit after his recent commitment.

Marcus Hicks – DE – Wichita (KS) Northwest: Hicks is a 6’5″, 236 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oklahoma, among others. He’s a 4-star, the #15 weakside end, and #255 overall. He actually visited March 18 into March 19, but he was supposed to visit later in the week, which is why I put him on this list. As a junior in 2017, he put up 63 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks. Right now 100% of the Crystal Ball picks are for Oklahoma.

Hit the jump for several more visitors.
