Meta: Upvotes and downvotes

As I mentioned previously (LINK), I am making small tweaks to the site here and there. Next up is a discussion with my tech guy about installing upvotes and downvotes. So I ask for your help with the direction of this aspect of the website.

Reddit upvotes

Above is the standard Reddit upvote/downvote button. The orange-highlighted arrow reflects the user’s individual vote, and the numeric total in the middle represents the net vote total. In this example, the user upvoted the comment/post and it currently has two more upvotes than downvotes. This is a spare but clean approach.

MGoBlog upvotes
The image above is a screenshot from MGoBlog. As you can see, the upvote arrow and downvote arrow are both visible, as are the totals for each. If this post were upvoted 10 times and downvoted 9 times, those totals would be visible rather than a simple -1 like the Reddit example above. Add in the join date and the “MGoPoints” – which reflect the user’s entire membership career – and it’s a much more complex and comprehensive representation of the user’s posting history.

Rather than an upvote/downvote button, a thumbs up or thumbs down button could be used. If you’re a Facebook user and ever wanted an “Unlike” button to go along with the “Like” button, maybe we could make this happen.

247 Sports upvotes

247 Sports upvotes 2

The images above represent the voting process on 247 Sports. It’s a simple upvote or downvote selection, and the vote total is revealed only after the user votes. That presumably prevents “groupthink” and people jumping on the bandwagon if they see something getting a ton of upvotes or downvotes.

What are your thoughts? Do you like any of these ideas better than others? Do you like having your posting history (sign-up date, number of posts, etc.) connected to your name and avatar?

Visitors: April 1-3, 2016

Robert Hainsey 765x

Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy offensive lineman Robert Hainsey

Here’s an early list of visitors for the 2016 spring game, which will take place on April 1. There will be lots of additions (and probably some subtractions), and I expect a good number of local recruits to visit Michigan Stadium for the event. However, local recruits are less vocal about these types of things, because they can hop in a car and drive an hour or two to the stadium, whereas players from far away have to make travel plans ahead of time. It’s shaping up to be a pretty good group so far.

2017
Ellis Brooks – LB – Richmond (VA) Benedictine: Brooks is a 6’2″, 240 lb. prospect with offers from Duke, Michigan, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #25 outside linebacker, and #292 overall. As a junior in 2015, he made 117 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 6 sacks. He is expected to stay in ACC country to play ball, but shortly after being offered by the Wolverines, he said he would visit for the spring game. That indicates he does have some serious interest in Michigan.

D’Antne Demery – OT – Brunswick (GA) Brunswick: Demery is a 6’6″, 308 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and Michigan, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #24 offensive tackle, and #158 overall. Georgia is the heavy favorite, but Michigan is trying to make headway in the Peach State.

Neil Farrell – DT – Mobile (AL) Murphy: Farrell is a 6’4″, 295 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, LSU, and Michigan, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #32 defensive tackle, and #499 overall. He has not named any favorites, and Michigan has made a pretty strong foray into Alabama since Jim Harbaugh arrived.

Hit the jump for several more visitors.

Defensive Recruiting Update: March 8, 2016

Dylan Moses 800x

Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy linebacker Dylan Moses

If you’re looking for updates on offensive players, check out yesterday’s post (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017
Pittsburgh (PA) Central Catholic linebacker David Adams was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’1″, 215 lb. prospect with offers from LSU, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt, and Stanford, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #4 inside linebacker, and #105 overall. Adams is a true middle linebacker who’s a solid tackler with some pretty good straight-line speed. The offer from the Wolverines did not seem to move the needle much. He’s a teammate of 2017 offensive guard C.J. Thorpe.

Norcross (GA) Norcross defensive end Robert Beal decommitted from Notre Dame. He’s a 6’4″, 230 lb. prospect who now has a top group of Alabama, Florida State, North Carolina State, South Carolina, and Texas. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #3 weakside end, and #42 overall. Michigan does not really seem to be a factor.

Oxford (AL) Oxford linebacker Kenney “K.J.” Britt was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’1″, 217 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, and Ole Miss, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #23 inside linebacker, and #668 overall. As a junior in 2015, he made 126 tackles, 22 TFLs, 5 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries, 1 of which he returned for a TD.

Oklahoma City (OK) John Marshall cornerback Justin Broiles was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’0″, 175 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Texas, and Texas A&M, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #21 cornerback, and #194 overall. Broiles is very physical and a strong tackler from the cornerback position, but he does not have the best ball skills. He is expected to stay in Big 12 country.

Hit the jump for many more 2017 offers, a new 2019 offer, and some other bits.

Offensive Recruiting Update: March 7, 2016

Cam Akers 765x

Clinton (MS) Clinton RB Cam Akers decommitted from Alabama

Thanks to those of you who have been using the Amazon link(s) to purchase items. As I mentioned before, right now 50% of my Amazon revenue is being donated to the Chad Tough Foundation. That means you helped donate $40 to Chad Tough in the month of February. If you want to donate straight to ChadTough, you can follow this link here (LINK).

I was trying to churn out spring practice previews last week, so the recruiting update got pushed back. And with the way Michigan is firing out offers under Jim Harbaugh, that means there are a ton of updates. Today is simply a look at the news about offensive products, with defensive guys hopefully to come tomorrow morning.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017
Clinton (MS) Clinton running back Cam Akers decommitted from Alabama. He’s a 5’11”, 210 lb. prospect who also has offers from Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, and Miami, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #3 running back, and #36 overall. A high school quarterback, he threw for 2,331 yards, 20 TDs, and 8 INTs last season; he also ran 169 times for 1,418 yards and 16 TDs. However, he is not expected to play QB at the next level. Akers recently said that he would probably take a visit to Michigan in the fall, but he lists Georgia and Ole Miss as his leaders now. The decommitment was not surprising, since Alabama also has #1 running back (and #1 overall player) Najee Harris committed, too.

Millbrook (AL) Stanhope Elmore tight end Zech Byrd was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’6″, 235 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Florida, and Ole Miss, among others. Byrd is unranked at this point, because a vast majority of his offers have come in the last couple of weeks. He has the body to play tight end or defensive end at the next level, but he is very raw and doesn’t have a great feel for the game on either side.

Brunswick (GA) Brunswick offensive tackle D’Antne Demery was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’6″, 308 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #24 offensive tackle, and #158 overall. He has already named Georgia his leader, so it might be tough to pull him out of the Peach State.

Hit the jump for lots and lots more offers, including a new 2019 tender.

Poll results: Who was Michigan’s 2015 MVP?

Gentry Morris Rudockx

Zach Gentry, Shane Morris, and Jake Rudock

Several weeks ago, I posted a poll asking, Who was the MVP of Michigan’s 2015 season? Here were the results of the poll:

QB Jake Rudock: 77%

WR Jehu Chesson: 9%

CB Jourdan Lewis: 9%

S Jabrill Peppers: 2%

TE Jake Butt: 1%

Other: 1%

DL Willie Henry: 1%

DL Chris Wormley: 1%

(Yes, I realize that because of rounding, the percentages add up to 101%.)

My vote went to Jake Rudock, who struggled early but played extremely well during the second half of the season. With any other quarterback on the roster leading the team, Michigan wouldn’t have approached 10 wins, in my opinion. I don’t know if the same can be said about any other individual player.

What’s your argument for your pick?
