2016 Season Countdown: #33 Patrick Kugler

Patrick Kugler (image via Bleacher Report)

Name: Patrick Kugler
Height: 6’5″
Weight: 303 lbs.
High school: Wexford (PA) North Allegheny
Position: Center
Class: Redshirt junior
Jersey number: #57
Last year: I ranked Kugler #29 and said he would be the backup center (LINK). He played in three games as a backup.

Entering his redshirt sophomore season last year, Kugler was suddenly thrust into a key backup role when Jack Miller ended his career prematurely. Luckily, Graham Glasgow stayed healthy and played well, so Kugler was not called upon in key situations to play on the offensive line. A frustrating shoulder injury has kept Kugler from adding strength and weight at times, and that lack of strength has been apparent over the past couple years when we have had a chance to see him. Along with too many mental mistakes, Kugler got pushed around quite a bit and struggled at the point of attack.

Seemingly to avoid putting Kugler on the field, the coaching staff has displaced junior left tackle Mason Cole to put him at center this year. Cole is already a two-year starter and will start somewhere this year, most likely at center. The coaching staff has kept alive the idea that Kugler could still win the spot, but it would take significant improvement over what we saw from him in the spring. I expect that Cole will keep the center spot, but left tackle Grant Newsome is the shakiest spot on the offensive line going into this season. If Newsome really struggles, it wouldn’t be out of the question to see Cole move back to left tackle with Kugler stepping in at center. The other problem is that Michigan doesn’t have anyone behind Kugler. Freshmen Ben Bredeson and Michael Onwenu talked about potentially playing center in college, but a true freshman center would be . . . less than ideal.

Prediction: Backup center

2017 Recruiting Update: August 10, 2016

James Hudson 206x

James Hudson III

Check out the message board for hype videos, some top lists, and Donald Trump (LINK).

COMMITMENT

Toledo (OH) Central Catholic defensive end James Hudson III committed to Michigan (LINK).

OFF THE BOARD

Miami (FL) Columbus cornerback Trajan Bandy committed to Miami. The presence of Mark Richt at Miami is clearly already making a difference. Bandy was a one-time Oklahoma commit who is now a Hurricane, and Richt also flipped former Georgia commit Deejay Dallas.

Los Angeles (CA) Cathedral defensive end Hunter Echols committed to USC. Echols was a UCLA commit not long ago, and while he showed some passing interest in his Michigan offer, I don’t think he wants to leave the west coast.

Hit the jump for several commitments elsewhere.

2016 Season Countdown: #34 Ty Isaac

Ty Isaac

Name: Ty Isaac
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 230 lbs.
High school: Joliet (IL) Catholic
Position: Running back
Class: Redshirt junior
Jersey number: #32
Last year: I ranked Isaac #33 and said he would be a backup running back with 600 yards and 7 touchdowns (LINK). He ran the ball 30 times for 205 yards (6.8 yards/carry) and 1 touchdown.

Isaac had the beginnings of a very solid year last season, and then it all came crashing down. In a battle for the #2 running back position – with a chance to take some snaps from De’Veon Smith, too – Isaac had 6 carries for 35 yards against Oregon State and then followed that up with what seemed like a breakout game. UNLV is UNLV, but Isaac ran 8 times for 114 yards (14.2 yards/carry) against the Runnin’ Rebels, including a 76-yard touchdown. Then he only got 2 carries against BYU. However, Smith hurt his ankle in that game, so Jim Harbaugh gave Isaac the start in the following game against Maryland. Isaac responded by fumbling twice in just 6 carries before being benched for the rest of the game. He would only get 4 more carries for the rest of the year, despite reports that he was taking first-team reps during the week of the Ohio State game and in preparation for the bowl game against Florida.

Way Too Early 2017 Depth Chart: August 2016

20 September 2014: Michigan defensive back Jabrill Peppers (5) gets into position in an NCAA college football game between the Michigan Wolverines and Utah, at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Let’s hope this guy can stick around for two more seasons (image via Today’s U)

With Michigan about to embark on fall practice for the 2016 season, it seems to be the perfect time to jump past this season and think about a year from now.

Below is a look at how the roster could shape up in 2017. There will certainly be departures, injuries, reshuffling of positions, etc., but those things are pretty difficult to project a year ahead of time. What we do know is that the 2017 version of Michigan’s team will be vastly different than 2016. The lineup below projects there to be at least 8 new starters on offense and 8 on defense, not to mention a new punter and kicker. Those six returning starters in 2017 should be the winner of the QB battle (O’Korn/Speight), the nominal fullback (Poggi/Hill), Grant Newsome, Rashan Gary, Jabrill Peppers, and Mike McCray. And yeah, that includes Jabrill Peppers, who could very well leave for the NFL. Particularly of note would be the lack of depth and experience on the offensive and defensive lines.

Hit the jump for an early look at 2017.
