Casey Phinney, Ex-Wolverine

Tyler Martin and Casey Phinney

Dedham (MA) Noble & Greenough linebacker Casey Phinney decommitted from Michigan on Saturday, announcing a commitment to Boston College instead.

Phinney committed to Michigan in April, and you could probably tell that I was not high on him as a prospect (LINK). So this decommitment does not disappoint me too much. I would prefer to still have Phinney committed if Michigan had been able to land offensive guard teammate Drew Kendall, but that ship seems to have sailed. Phinney by himself? That wasn’t that interesting to me. He is currently a 3-star, the #50 inside linebacker, and #1189 overall.

Interestingly, Phinney is also good friends with 2022 linebacker Tyler Martin (see the above picture), who committed to Michigan recently (LINK).

Michigan has now suffered two decommitments in the 2021 class, Phinney and Clayton (OH) Northmont wide receiver Markus Allen. There remain three linebackers committed to the Wolverines: Junior Colson, Jaydon Hood, and Tyler McLaurin.

Tavierre Dunlap, Wolverine

Del Valle (TX) Del Valle RB Tavierre Dunlap (image via Twitter)

Del Valle (TX) Del Valle running back Tavierre Dunlap committed to Michigan on Saturday evening. He picked the Wolverines over offers from Mississippi State, Notre Dame, TCU, Texas Tech, UCLA, and USC, among others.

Dunlap is listed at 6’0″ and 195 lbs. As a junior in 2019, he ran 128 times for 1,341 yards and 20 touchdowns, adding 20 receptions for 208 yards and 3 scores. As a sophomore in 2018, he ran 186 times for 1,449 yards and 17 touchdowns. He claims an 11.23 in the 100 meters and a 4.63 laser-timed forty.

ESPN: 3-star, 78 grade, #37 RB
Rivals: 3-star, 5.7 grade, #27 RB
247 Sports: 4-star, 91 grade, #14 RB, #220 overall

Markus Allen, Ex-Wolverine

Clayton (OH) Northmont WR Markus Allen

Clayton (OH) Northmont wide receiver Markus Allen decommitted from Michigan on Wednesday. He committed back in April (LINK).

I was not super high on Allen as a recruit, so my concern level here is pretty low. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #68 wide receiver, and #455 overall. He is a teammate of safety Rod Moore, who is committed to Michigan, and I do wonder if Allen’s change of heart will affect Moore.

Michigan will probably jump back into receiver recruiting since it looked like they were finished. Before Michigan secured a commitment from in-stater Andrel Anthony (LINK), they were pretty hard after Georgia product Jayden Thomas.
