Lidback is a player who I’ve been saying for the past couple years probably needs to stick around for three or four seasons before he would have a chance to get on the field. Without being a standout athlete or particularly big, he needs to know what he’s doing and be in as good of shape as possible. He’s even lighter (down from 223 pounds to 217) this season than last, so I don’t expect things to change much this year. He’s still probably on the outside looking in when it comes to playing time.

Lidback is a player who, as I mentioned last year, could be a program guy who works his way up the depth chart throughout the years. He has good size overall (though he probably needs to add bulk since 223 lbs. is a tad light when you’re a 6’3″ linebacker) and some talent. Despite Michigan’s lack of proven depth at linebacker, Lidback is probably still on the outside looking in. If he sticks around for another two or three years, he might be able to get on special teams and perhaps play as a backup.

Lidback recently committed to Michigan as a preferred walk-on. He comes from a large high school in a strong football state, so the competition in his highlights below is pretty strong. Lidback manages not to look out of place playing inside linebacker and tight end. While he doesn’t have the explosive movements of an FBS athlete, he could be the type of “program guy” who sticks around the team for three to four years and eventually finds a short stretch of opportunity, similar to what happened with Adam Shibley in 2020.
