Andre Seldon, Jr., Ex-Wolverine

Andre Seldon, Jr.

Cornerback Andre Seldon, Jr. has decided to enter the transfer portal. Seldon was an Under Armour All-American in the class of 2020 and a 4-star, the #11 cornerback, and #161 overall.

Listed at just 5’8″ and 173 lbs., size was always a question for him. However, he was a dynamic punt returner and speedy defensive back in high school, and he played bigger than his size in the UA game and practices. He played in just two games at Michigan and mostly practiced in the slot. He did have some health issues while at Michigan that prevented him from practicing/playing at times, but how much that factored into his overall decision is up in the air. Generally, it just seems like he did not have a clear path to playing time, and he wants to start over elsewhere. I thought he could be a punt/kick returner if nothing else, but even with Michigan’s punt return struggles this season, Seldon did not see the field.

Three defensive backs have entered the transfer portal in recent days; Seldon joins cornerbacks Darion Green-Warren and George Johnson III. This is likely at least a little bit related to the fact that Michigan is bringing in six defensive backs in the 2022 class, several of whom are highly ranked and probably headed for some early playing time. In general, while Seldon could certainly go elsewhere and find success, I think it’s odd and somewhat concerning that these numerous Belleville products do not seem to pan out or they struggle in college.

Seldon’s brother Myles Rowser was at one time committed to Michigan in the class of 2022, and so was fellow Belleville product Aaron Alexander, a linebacker. Rowser is now committed to Arkansas, and Alexander is still searching for a home.

2021 Season Countdown: #55 Andre Seldon, Jr.

Andre Seldon

Name: Andre Seldon, Jr.
Height:
5’8″
Weight:
172 lbs.
High school:
Belleville (MI) Belleville
Position:
Cornerback
Class:
Redshirt freshman
Jersey number:
#0
Last year:
I ranked Seldon #32 and said he would start at nickel corner (LINK). He played in one game.
TTB Rating:
83

Seldon was an Under Armour All-American and seemed destined for early playing time in a Michigan uniform, especially for a team lacking corners.

Then 2020 rolled around, and he almost never played.

That can be partially explained by the fact that Seldon suffered an injury, but he supposedly got healthy partway through the season and still was kept off the field.

I still think Seldon could be an excellent nickel corner because of his quickness, man coverage, and willingness to come up and stop the run, despite his diminutive stature. It remains to be seen how this staff will use a player in that mold. Talk is that safety Daxton Hill could move to the nickel spot when that position is necessary, but I would think that would be dependent on who’s available to play in the slot.

If the extra safety is better, move Hill to nickel. If the extra corner is better, keep Hill at safety.

I don’t know how much Seldon will play in 2021, but I do think he’s one of the top five most talented defensive backs.

Prediction: Backup cornerback

Michigan vs. Indiana Awards

Remember this?

Let’s see more of this guy on offense . . . Jalen Mayfield. Naturally, because it’s 2020 and everything sucks, Michigan had one returning starter on the offensive line and that lone returning starter was the first lineman to get hurt. Mayfield missed the Indiana game, and so did left tackle Ryan Hayes. I said in the lead-up to the game that I thought Michigan would lose the game if Mayfield didn’t play. The Wolverines had 18 rushing attempts for 13 yards (0.7 yards/carry) and the Hoosiers had 3 sacks.
