Alan Branch, who plays for the New England Patriots, had 5 tackles and 1 sack in a 16-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Those are pretty solid numbers for a nose tackle. The 6’6″, 350-pounder is best known to Michigan fans as the guy who flattened Penn State quarterback Anthony Morelli.

HONORABLE MENTION

  • Patriots QB Tom Brady’s lame suspension ended this week, so he rejoined his team and will start next week
  • Seattle Seahawks DE Frank Clark had 1 tackle and 1 pass breakup in 27-17 victory over the New York Jets
  • Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess caught 2 passes for 56 yards in a 48-33 loss to the Atlanta Falcons
  • New York Giants CB Leon Hall made 7 tackles in a 24-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings
  • Jacksonville Jaguars OT Patrick Omameh made his first start of the year in a 30-27 win over the Indianapolis Colts

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Jake Ryan

Jake Ryan (#47)

Green Bay Packers linebacker Jake Ryan made 6 solo tackles and 3 assists (9 total) in a 34-27 win over the Detroit Lions. As painful – though expected – as it was for Lions fans to watch, it was a nice job by Ryan, who has carved out a starting role for the Packers.

Honorable mention:

  • Philadelphia Eagles DE Brandon Graham had 1 sack in a 34-3 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He now has 3 sacks on the season.
  • New York Giants CB Leon Hall, in his first year with the team after coming over from the Bengals, had 4 tackles and 1 pass breakup in a 29-27 loss to the Washington Redskins

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Tom Brady

For the third week in a row, it’s Tom Brady winning this award. He and the 3-0 New England Patriots blew out the Jacksonville Jaguars by a score of 51-17. Brady was 33/42 for 358 yards and 2 touchdowns. Chad Henne and Denard Robinson did not play for the Jaguars, since the former is a backup and the latter has a sprained MCL.

Honorable mention: Seattle Seahawks running back Thomas Rawls had 16 carries for 104 yards in a 26-0 win over the Chicago Bears. Arizona Cardinals outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley made 2 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 quarterback hurry in a 47-7 win over San Francisco. Oakland Raiders cornerback Charles Woodson made 6 tackles, 1 interception, and 2 pass breakups in a 27-20 victory against the Cleveland Browns.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Tom Brady

Tom Brady

Tom Brady had another good game this week in a 40-32 win over the Buffalo Bills. The New England Patriots quarterback completed 38/59 passes for 466 yards and 3 touchdowns. He leads the NFL in passing touchdowns after two weeks.

Honorable mention: With each passing year, it seems like the number of impact players in the NFL that went to Michigan continues to dwindle. Honorable mention this week goes to Brady’s teammate, Alan Branch, who made 1 sack that caused a fumble.
