2017 Recruiting Update: August 1, 2016

Bullard (TX) Bullard TE Major Tennison (image via ET Final Score)

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017

Bullard (TX) Bullard tight end Major Tennison decommitted from Texas. He’s a 6’6″, 245 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Oregon, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #11 tight end, and #323 overall. He’ll be at Michigan’s BBQ at the Big House this coming weekend, and with the commitment of Kedrick James to Alabama (see below), he may be inclined to pick Michigan. Alabama took two tight ends in 2016 and may not want a second TE in this class.

Hit the jump for more developments over the last several days.

MGoFish guest post: 2017 Best Guess Recruiting Class – Offense

Donovan Peoples-Jones 725x

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (image via Rivals)

The following is a guest post from Garrett Fishaw, the owner/managing editor of MGoFish.

With Harbaugh’s first full recruiting class in the books, all eyes turn to 2017 to see how Harbaugh will follow up his top five finish in 2016.

The staff has put in a ton of early work to set themselves up for a great return. And it’s clearly paid off. They’ve already landed the top quarterback on their board and look to be among the favorites for a handful of elite members of the class.

But how will it finish? That’s almost impossible to predict this early, especially after the craziness that took place the last two cycles. So, take this prediction with a grain of salt as there will likely be more decommitments and targets that emerge later in the process.

1. QB Dylan McCaffrey, 6’5” 200lbs. Littleton, CO (Valor)

  • McCaffrey committed to Michigan in mid-February after having the Wolverines out front for almost a year. His addition to the class is huge as both a prospect and recruiting asset. Expect him to be a big reason why UM lands several top targets in 2017.
  • Michigan’s ChancesCOMMITTED

2. RB Kurt Taylor, 5’9” 200lbs. Covington, GA (Newton)

  • Taylor committed to Michigan in October and, like the rest of rest of the current commits, looks to be as solid as can be in that pledge. UM lost the commitment of his teammate WR Jeremiah Holloman earlier this month but that shouldn’t change anything in Taylor’s status. The only thing to watch with Taylor is his development throughout the cycle, as he already looks to have just about hit the peak of his physical build.
  • Michigan’s Chances: COMMITTED

Hit the jump for the rest of Garrett’s offensive best guess list.

COMMITMENT
Littleton (CO) Valor Christian quarterback Dylan McCaffrey committed to Michigan (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017
Wylie (TX) East running back Eno Benjamin was offered by Michigan. He’s a 5’10”, 204 lb. prospect with offers from Houston, Iowa, Miami, and Texas Tech, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #13 running back, and #170 overall. As a junior in 2015, he ran 366 times for 2,652 yards and 41 TDs; he also caught 18 passes for 232 yards and 2 TDs. Benjamin’s trainer is former Michigan running back David Underwood, and he has been trying to get a Michigan offer for a couple years now. He does not have great top-end speed and is somewhat similar to 2017 running back commit Kurt Taylor, although Taylor probably has the edge in power while Benjamin is a little more elusive. If you want a good chuckle, watch Benjamin’s highlights at the :47 mark; as he breaks free down the sideline, his receiver realizes the cornerback is trailing him in man coverage, so the receiver just keeps sprinting 50 yards downfield while the cornerback has no idea where the ball is.

Kimberly (WI) Kimberly offensive guard Logan Bruss was offered by Michigan. He’s a 6’4″, 260 lb. prospect with offers from Illinois, Nebraska, and Wisconsin, among others. Ben Bredeson aside, it’s typically pretty difficult to pull Wisconsin linemen out of Wisconsin when the state of Wisconsin wants to keep them in Wisconsin. Dorms made of cheese with beer faucets are hard to turn down.

Hit the jump for a bunch more new offers, a new 2018 offer, and some random bits.

Isaiah Wilson 617x

Brooklyn (NY) Poly offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson

Michigan is putting together a junior day for the Michigan State basketball game on February 6. Here is the beginning of a list of players who are expected to attend, although this is a bare-bones list so far:

2016
Terius Wheatley – CB – Ann Arbor (MI) Pioneer: Wheatley is the son of Michigan running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley and the brother of Michigan tight end Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. As far as I know, he does not have any scholarship offers.

2017
Corey Malone-Hatcher – DE – St. Joseph (MI) St. Joseph: Hatcher is a 6’3″, 246 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #10 weakside end, and #186 overall. He has visited Michigan numerous times, and the Wolverines have 89% of his Crystal Ball picks so far. Malone-Hatcher suffered a lower leg injury this past season that caused him to miss a large chunk of his junior year.

Scott Nelson – S – Detroit (MI) U of D Jesuit: Nelson is a 6’2″, 180 lb. prospect with offers from Boston College, Miami-OH, Michigan, and Northwestern. He’s a 247 Sports 3-star, the #45 safety, and #616 overall. The offer from Michigan came in recently, and he’s strongly considering the Wolverines at this point.

Joshua Ross – LB – Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s: Ross is a 6’1″, 210 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oklahoma, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 4-star, the #5 inside linebacker, and #144 overall. Michigan has 100% of his Crystal Ball picks so far. He is the younger brother of James Ross III, who just completed his career as a linebacker at Michigan.

Antjuan Simmons – LB – Ann Arbor (MI) Pioneer: Simmons is a 6’1″, 205 lb. prospect with offers from Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #23 outside linebacker, and #358 overall. He recently left Michigan off of his top list, probably in part because the Wolverines dragged their feet on offering him. It remains to be seen whether Michigan can get back in on his recruitment, but they should have a good chance, since he goes to school across the street from Michigan Stadium.

Allen Stritzinger – RB – Warren (MI) De La Salle: Stritzinger is a 6’0″, 180 lb. prospect with offers from Cincinnati, Michigan, and some MAC schools. He’s a 247 Composite 3-star, the #25 running back, and #338 overall. The Crystal Ball is 100% in favor of Michigan right now, and he has declared Michigan his leader.

Isaiah Wilson – OT – Brooklyn (NY) Poly: Wilson is a 6’7″, 322 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, and Stanford, among others. He’s a 247 Composite 5-star, the #5 offensive tackle, and #15 overall. (Really? There are five tackles in the top 15 players in the country?) Wilson has openly declared that Michigan is his leader.

2018
Tyrique Wheatley – CB – Ann Arbor (MI) Pioneer: Wheatley, the younger brother of Terius (see above), is a 5’11”, 165 lb. prospect with no offers at this time.
