All-Time Career Field Goals Made Leaders

Jake Moody

With the graduation of Jake Moody – and his possible drafting this spring – I wanted to take a look back at the top field goal kickers in Michigan history.

  1. 69 – Jake Moody (2018-2022)
  2. 64 – Garrett Rivas (2003-2006)
  3. 63 – Remy Hamilton (1993-1996)
  4. 57 – Mike Gillette (1985-1988)
  5. 45 – Brendan Gibbons (2010-2013)
  6. 42 – Quinn Nordin (2017-2020)
  7. 39 – J.D. Carlson (1989-1991)
  8. 37 – Kenny Allen (2012-2016)
  9. 31 – Ali Haji Sheikh (1979-1982)
  10. 29 – Bob Bergeron (1981-1984)

Interestingly – to me, at least – some of the best years in modern Michigan history are not represented here, such as 1997-2002. That was right in the middle of the Lloyd Carr years. Maybe Michigan was too busy scoring touchdowns with Anthony Thomas, David Terrell, etc. to be kicking many field goals.

2022 Season Countdown: #10 Jake Moody

Jake Moody

Name: Jake Moody
Height:
6’1″
Weight:
210 lbs.
High school:
Northville (MI) Northville
Position:
Kicker
Class:
Fifth year senior
Jersey number:
#13
Last year:
I ranked Moody #7 and said he would be the starting kickoff specialist and placekicker (LINK). He was the kickoff specialist and made 23/25 field goals and 56/56 extra points.
TTB Rating:
 N/A

Moody went from being a question mark in 2020 – when he made just 1/4 field goals – to a consensus All-American in 2021. It’s probably not a coincidence that fellow kicker Quinn Nordin had gone to the NFL after the 2020 season. It seemed like the pressure of Nordin lurking over his shoulder had been a bit too ominous for him to overcome. Once Nordin was gone, Moody turned into a star. He won the Lou Groza Award as the top kicker in the country and was Big Ten Kicker of the Year.

Moody should be very good again in 2022. Whether he repeats as a winner of all those awards or not, you never know. Other guys could have great seasons, too. If he makes 23/25 field goals and another guy makes 24/25, hats off to the other guy. But it’s not often you get a consensus All-American returning despite being draft eligible. So why is Moody at #10? I can put a kicker in the top ten – or even at #7 like I did last year – but it’s tough to rank a guy all the way at the top who doesn’t play full-time on offense or defense.

Prediction: Starting kickoff specialist and placekicker

Now’s your chance to lambaste me for my idiocy, so you can go check out my season predictions if you want (LINK).

LEADING RUSHER
Season prediction: Hassan Haskins, 900 yards
Actual: Hassan Haskins, 1327 yards
Scoop: I thought Michigan might spread the ball around a little more – and I did not expect Haskins to get 270 carries – but Haskins got a big boost in production when Blake Corum injured his ankle. Haskins notched 27, 31, 20, and 28 carries in the wake of Corum’s injury before the latter returned healthy. The last time any running back topped 270 carries in a season was Mike Hart, who had 318 attempts in 2006.

LEADING RECEIVER
Season prediction: Ronnie Bell, 800 yards
Actual: Cornelius Johnson, 620 yards
Scoop: Bell got hurt in the first game of 2021, tearing his ACL on a punt return. He had 1 catch for a 76-yard touchdown at that point. After a two-year run as Michigan’s leading receiver, it was time for a new king, and that new king was 6’3″, 210 lb. Cornelius Johnson. Johnson made 39 catches for 620 yards and 3 touchdowns.
