Name: Mike Morris
Height:
6’6″
Weight:
276 lbs.
High school:
Belle Glade (FL) American Heritage
Position:
Defensive end
Class:
Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number:
#90
Last year:
I ranked Morris #76 and said he would be a backup defensive end (LINK). He played in one game and made 1 tackle.
TTB Rating:
81

I have to admit that I’m going out on a limb here with my ranking of Morris at #48. With Michigan’s new defensive staff taking over, I have to think that someone in the front seven will come out of nowhere to become a solid rotation player, and I’m going with Morris as one of those candidates. He only played in one game last season and looked pretty thin, as though he hasn’t fully matured. With another off-season under his belt, I think he has the length and athleticism to be a guy who can play the 4i or a 5-tech and help contribute. Michigan needs players to step up on game day or at least provide competition. With proper development I still think Morris could be a good player down the road.

Prediction: Backup defensive end

2020 Season Countdown: #76 Mike Morris

Mike Morris (image via Twitter)

Name: Mike Morris
Height:
6’6″
Weight:
262 lbs.
High school:
Belle Glade (FL) American Heritage
Position:
Defensive end
Class:
Redshirt freshman
Jersey number:
#80
Last year:
I ranked Morris #74 and said he would redshirt (LINK). He redshirted.
TTB Rating:
81

Morris had a pretty predictable freshman year as a 6’6″, 258 lb. defensive lineman: he redshirted. Michigan could have used some help along the defensive interior, but the end position had a pretty good rotation. But a 6’6″, 258-pounder isn’t going to help inside.

Morris is listed four pounds heavier on Michigan’s roster than he was last year, but hopefully he has added even more weight than that. He should probably be up in the 270 lb. range for defensive end and even higher if he moves inside to the 3-tech defensive tackle position. There wasn’t much buzz about him as a freshman, and the defensive line rotation once again seems to be pretty set with at least three playable guys on the inside and three more outside. Morris should spend most of 2020 watching, but he will probably get a few snaps here or there.

Prediction: Backup defensive end

Final TTB Ratings for 2019

Daxton Hill

I know it’s a little bit late in the game, but back in the spring, I didn’t have time to review all the senior film for Michigan’s 2019 signees and give them updated TTB Ratings. I did that during the 2019 Season Countdown, so here are the final TTB Ratings for the class of 2019.

S Daxton Hill: 100
He’s the best safety in the class, though it’s an unimpressive safety class overall.

RB Zach Charbonnet: 83 90
As long as he can get/stay healthy, Charbonnet has the potential to be a high draft pick in the future.

DT Chris Hinton, Jr.: 90
He should be an early contributor with high long-term upside.

2019 Season Countdown: #74 Mike Morris

Mike Morris

Name: Mike Morris
Height:
6’6″
Weight:
258 lbs.
High school:
Belle Glade (FL) American Heritage
Position:
Defensive end
Class:
Freshman
Jersey number:
N/A
Last year:
Morris was a senior in high school (LINK). He had 89 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and 1 blocked punt that he returned for a touchdown.
TTB Rating:
81

Morris was committed to Florida State for two years before flipping to the Wolverines last September. Looking at his 2018 senior season highlights, not much has changed since my initial evaluation of him. He’s a big body with good athleticism who needs to work on some technical things, along with improving his motor (which should be helped by the fact that he won’t be playing tight end on offense).

As for the upcoming season, Morris is a bit of a wild card. He looks like a college defensive end already, but I think college offensive linemen would have their way with him. How quickly can he learn a better stance, improved hand placement, and to play with a lower pad level consistently? I think it will take at least a season, but I could see him playing in a couple games early just to get his feet wet. The Wolverines do not have established depth on the defensive line, so they may want to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.

Prediction: Redshirt
