2024 Season Countdown: #108 Peter Simmons

Peter Simmons

Name: Peter Simmons
Height:
6’1″
Weight:
283 lbs.
High school:
Bonita Springs (FL) Bishop Verot
Position:
Defensive tackle
Class:
Redshirt junior
Jersey number:
#70
Last year:
I ranked Simmons #128 and said he would be a backup defensive tackle (LINK). He did not play.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Simmons has spent three years at Michigan as a walk-on and a backup offensive and defensive lineman. So far he has yet to see the field.

Maybe this is the year!

Maybe not, though. It’s tough when you’re 6’1″ and 283 pounds to see the field at a place like Michigan, unless you’re super quick like David Molk. But he does play a defensive tackle position that is a little light in numbers. Michigan was flirting with defensive end types like Enow Etta and walk-on Joey Klunder at defensive tackle this spring, and they were going after some transfer portal types as rotation guys. No one should be expecting Simmons to enter the rotation, but in case of a blowout, he could be a guy who gets some late game snaps just to give other guys a rest. And if he sticks around for 2025, he could be on the same team as another Bishop Verot product in 2025 quarterback commit Carter Smith.

Prediction: Backup defensive tackle

2023 Season Countdown: #128 Peter Simmons

Peter Simmons III

Name: Peter Simmons III
Height:
6’2″
Weight:
291 lbs.
High school:
Bonita Springs (FL) Bishop Verot
Position:
Defensive tackle
Class:
Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number:
#75 #70
Last year:
I ranked Simmons #120 and said he would be a backup offensive lineman (LINK). He did not play.
TTB Rating:
 N/A

Simmons is yet another walk-on whose burden was so heavy that he got one inch shorter from 2022 to 2023. Whoever’s measuring these walk-ons needs to be fired.

Anyway, in addition to getting smaller, Simmons has moved from offensive guard to defensive tackle this off-season. I do not expect that to have much effect on his playing time. He is still unlikely to get on the field unless it’s a huge blowout.

Prediction: Backup defensive tackle

2022 Season Countdown: #120 Peter Simmons III

Name: Peter Simmons III
Height:
6’3″
Weight:
291 lbs.
High school:
Bonita Springs (FL) Bishop Verot
Position:
Offensive guard
Class:
Redshirt freshman
Jersey number:
#75
Last year:
I ranked Simmons #129 and said he would redshirt (LINK). He redshirted.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Simmons moves up a little bit from last year, largely based on the departure of guys ahead of him. I mentioned in last year’s introduction to him that he is limited athletically, and he doesn’t have overwhelming size at 6’3″. Of course former starting center Andrew Vastardis was also 6’3″, but I don’t think Simmons is on the same level athletically. Simmons is probably a career backup, but those guys can be valuable on the scout team.

Prediction: Backup offensive lineman

2021 Season Countdown: #129 Peter Simmons III

Note: I skipped #130 because Willie Allen transferred (LINK) and I’m not going to bother posting about him later, so the countdown jumps from #131 to #129.

Name: Peter Simmons III
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 282 lbs.
High school: Fort Myers (FL) Bishop Verot
Position: Offensive guard
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: N/A
Last year: Simmons was a senior in high school.
TTB Rating: N/A

Simmons committed to Michigan as a preferred walk-on, despite some offers from smaller colleges, including FCS Butler. He’s rather limited when it comes to athleticism, and obviously, it’s tough to play offensive line as any kind of freshman, scholarship-level or walk-on. I full expect him to redshirt and play on the scout team.

Prediction: Redshirt
