Ex-Wolverine Updates: 2017, Week 2

Shane Morris

NOTE: This isn’t really related to anything, but we’ve had the #1, #3, and #7 most comments ever on the site on three different posts in the last week-and-a-half. It’s great. Thanks for reading and participating!

TRANSFERS

Independence C.C. RB Kingston Davis: Davis had 7 carries for 22 yards in a 27-23 win over Garden City Community College.

Rutgers LB Ross Douglas: Douglas made 7 tackles in a 16-13 loss to Eastern Michigan. Yes, Rutgers lost to EMU.

Central Michigan QB Shane Morris: Morris completed 28/37 passes (75.7%) for 467 yards and 5 touchdowns; he also ran 8 times for 32 yards in a 45-27 win over Kansas. This was easily the best game of his career and, frankly, quite a surprise.

FORMER COMMITMENTS

Boston College RB A.J. Dillon: Dillon ran 15 times for 43 yards in a 34-10 loss to Wake Forest.

Illinois LB Dele’ Harding: Harding made 2 tackles in Illinois’ 20-7 win over Western Kentucky.

Alabama RB Damien Harris: Harris ran 6 times for 32 yards and caught 1 pass for -7 yards in a 41-10 win over Fresno State.

Eastern Illinois LB Dytarious Johnson: Johnson has made 10 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss in two games this season.

Maryland CB Antwaine Richardson: Richardson made 2 tackles in a 63-17 win over Towson. This comes a week after he was carted off the field with fears of a spinal injury, so it’s good to know he’s healthy.

North Carolina State DT Darian Roseboro: Roseboro made 1 tackle in a 37-20 win over Marshall.

Penn State S Garrett Taylor: Taylor made 2 tackles in a 33-14 win over Pitt.

Pittsburgh DE Rashad Weaver: Weaver made 1 tackle in a 33-14 loss to Penn State.

FORMER COACHES

Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin: Durkin’s Terrapins won against cupcake Towson, 63-17. They’re 2-0 this season.

Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez: The Wildcats lost to Houston at home, 19-16. They’re 1-1 this year.

Ex-Wolverine Updates: 2017 Pre-season Edition

Shane Morris (image via Twitter)

TRANSFERS

OG Kyle Bosch: Bosch is expected to start at offensive guard for West Virginia. He’s currently ranked as the #11 offensive guard in the 2018 draft class by NFL Draft Scout.

WR/S Brian Cole: Cole spent the 2016 season at East Mississippi Community College, the school that’s the subject of the Netflix docuseries Last Chance U. Cole isn’t featured prominently, though he makes a couple cameos. Anyway, he made 54 tackles, 1 sack, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries at safety. He enrolled at Mississippi State in January but he will have to redshirt this year to get in compliance with academic requirements.

RB Kingston Davis: Davis ran 2 times for 17 yards against Hawaii in last year’s season opener, and now he’s transferring to Independence Community College in Kansas. The assumption is that he’ll try to transfer back up to an FBS program in 2018.

Shane Morris, Ex-Wolverine

Shane-Morris

Former Michigan insider Tom Van Haaren, who still concentrates a lot on the Wolverines, reported earlier tonight that redshirt junior quarterback Shane Morris will transfer (LINK). Since he would be entering his fifth year of college with an undergraduate degree, he could transfer into any grad program that Michigan does not offer.

Morris committed to Michigan in May of 2011, even though he was a 2013 prospect. He was a 247 Composite 4-star, the #3 pro-style quarterback, and #72 overall out of Warren (MI) De La Salle. He was invited to the Elite 11 and played in the Under Armour All-America Game. At the time he was viewed as Michigan’s savior at quarterback, since then coach Brady Hoke was a pro-style guy and Morris was a borderline 5-star prospect to some services. Ultimately, though, the lack of development from Morris may have contributed to Hoke’s ouster. As an injury replacement for Devin Gardner, he completed 29/47 passes for 261 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions as a freshman, including his best career performance in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl after Gardner broke his foot. In that game he was 24/38 for 193 yards, along with 4 carries for 43 yards in the loss. Things were downright terrible in 2014 when he was 14/40 for 128 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions; the concussion he suffered against Minnesota induced new protocols throughout college football, since he was left in the game after taking a shot to the head/neck area and stumbling around for a moment.

When Jim Harbaugh arrived in 2015, Morris was #2 on the depth chart to begin the season, even though the coaching staff was trying to preserve a redshirt year. That was presumably to help him secure a grad transfer later in his career. He sat behind Jake Rudock and was eventually passed by Wilton Speight for the backup gig, anyway. Going into the 2016 season, he was a solid #3 behind Speight and John O’Korn. Morris played in certain packages this past season, mostly handing off the ball or leading the way on some toss sweeps. He was 4/5 for 45 yards this season, along with 3 carries for 19 yards, while playing in just six games.

Morris’s departure was expected. Michigan has a returning starter in Speight and some quality quarterbacks coming in the pipeline. The fate of backup John O’Korn is up in the air, since he also appears to be behind Speight going forward, but there was going to be a logjam with upperclassman quarterbacks. This development won’t hurt Michigan on the field. It opens a door for a potential contributor to get a scholarship.

Transfers and grad transfers often like to go close to home, so I would be inclined to guess that Morris will end up at a MAC school to finish out his career. Along with some big-time offers, he was pursued by Bowling Green, Central Michigan, and Toledo in high school. I’m not familiar with the quarterback situations at each school, but with his college track record, I sincerely doubt he’s going to get a look from another Power Five school unless they’re extremely desperate.

2016 Michigan at Rutgers Awards

Let’s see more of this guy on offense . . . Jabrill Peppers. This is a bit disingenuous, because more of Peppers against Rutgers is a bit superfluous. He’s just such a dynamic player that busted plays turn into 63-yard runs, naked bootlegs turn into 7-yard touchdown runs, and penalty-doomed punt returns still look like highlights of the year. Again, Michigan might not need him against Illinois and their ilk, but 3 carries for 74 yards and 2 touchdowns is pretty impressive production for a defensive player. The one read option play where he gave to Ty Isaac probably should have been a keep by the QB, but otherwise, he was electric as a Wildcat signal caller. This is why I’ve said in the past that Peppers needs to play more offense. He can take ignite a team immediately.

Hit the jump for the rest of the awards.
