Sadly, this will be the final recruiting update dedicated to the 2022 class, since National Signing Day took place this past Wednesday. There are still a few uncommitted prospects with Michigan offers, such as Washington offensive tackle Josh Conerly, but any developments with those players will be rolled into 2023 and 2024 recruiting updates.

DECOMMITMENT

Lawndale (CA) Leuzinger outside linebacker Kevonte Henry flipped from Michigan to Oklahoma (LINK).

OFF THE BOARD

Bellflower (CA) St. John Bosco cornerback Tayvion Beasley committed to Jackson State, Deion Sanders’s FCS program.

Lake Charles (LA) College Prep running back TreVonte Citizen committed to Miami.

Tay’shawn Trent, Ex-Wolverine

Tay’shawn Trent

Harper Woods (MI) Harper Woods wide receiver Tay’shawn Trent decommitted from Michigan on Tuesday. Trent committed to Michigan back in March of 2021 (LINK).

I like Trent as a prospect, largely as a jumbo receiver/flex tight end type. I think he’s too slow to be a bona fide receiver, but he could split out in the slot to create some personnel and matchup issues. The Wolverines also obviously liked him to an extent, but he had been conspicuously absent from much Michigan hype lately, such as recruiting other players, graphics, etc. It almost seemed like he had vanished from the class a couple months ago, somewhat similar to fellow decommit Mario Eugenio.

Michigan does need to continue to recruit the receiver position, since there’s not much depth currently on the roster. I would also not be at all surprised if there were attrition in the off-season, considering how few balls are being thrown to receivers in this offense. A new offer went out to East Carolina wide receiver commit Kaleb Webb, and I imagine the Wolverines will continue to recruit other players, not to mention the continued pursuit of Notre Dame commit Amorion Walker.

Michigan now has 17 commits remaining in the class, including just 1 receiver (Tyler Morris, who’s coming off of an ACL injury). This is the seventh player to decommit in the 2022 class, joining OLB Mario Eugenio, S Taylor Groves (Ole Miss), LB Tyler Martin (Arizona), DT Davonte Miles, S Myles Rowser (Arkansas), and DT Alex VanSumeren (Michigan State).

Jacksonville (FL) Bartram Trail LB Micah Pollard

TRANSFERS

Jay Toia – DT – USC: Toia is a 6’2″, 315 lb. player who signed with USC in the class of 2021. However, he entered the transfer portal and is interested in Michigan. Michigan offered him out of high school and pursued hard, but Toia has lamented that he couldn’t take official visits and see more schools due to COVID.

2022

He stopped by Michigan for an unofficial visit and is supposed to return later in June for an official visit. The Wolverines recently offered his younger brother Micah Bell, a 2023 cornerback.

Jeremiah Caldwell – CB – Belleville (MI) Belleville: Caldwell is a 6’3″, 170 lb. prospect who has been committed to Kentucky since January 2021. He is a 3-star, the #31 athlete, and #385 overall. Michigan offered in mid-April, and the defensive backs coach he committed to at Kentucky is now at Michigan (Steve Clinkscale). This is an unofficial visit on June 2.

Dakari Frazier – DE – Pickerington (OH) Central: Frazier is a 6’4″, 245 lb. prospect with offers from a handful of MAC programs. He’s a 247 Sports 3-star and the #174 defensive lineman in the country. He’s a teammate of 2023 safety/linebacker Sonny Styles (see below).
