2023 All-Big Ten Selections

Blake Corum

Michigan dominated the all-conference selections in 2023, which is to be somewhat expected with a 12-0 record.

THIRD TEAM
OL Karsen Barnhart (Media)

HONORABLE MENTION

RET Semaj Morgan (Coaches, Media)

I believe every single Michigan starter is represented here except FB/TE Max Bredeson (1 start), OL Trente Jones (2 starts), WR Tyler Morris (2 starts), safety Keon Sabb (4 starts). Even a full-time backup in Derrick Moore – who has yet to start a single game – was named Honorable Mention by both the coaches and the media.

Do you see any snubs?

Personally, I think Mike Sainristil should have been 1st team to both coaches/media. Meanwhile, I’m surprised Barnhart was valued so highly since he struggled in pass protection so much, especially over the last three weeks of the season.

Michigan 30, East Carolina 3

Roman Wilson (image via Rivals)

Football is back! All is right in the world when it’s football season. In another few days, the NFL season will be back and we can all enjoy Heaven for a few months. It has been a long off-season for me on an individual level, and this is also a chance to break away from the 2023 Season Countdown and get back into a groove with writing about various topics.

This was a boring matchup. I like seeing different opponents, but with East Carolina, there were no storylines. It’s not a geographical matchup. When I looked through the roster and coaching staff, there was no crossover. East Carolina doesn’t recruit in the state of Michigan. No transfers or ex-staffers from Michigan. There was no angle. The most interesting aspect going into the opener, aside from seeing who starts for Michigan, was . . .

. . . Peacock. The Peacock stream sucked. I signed up for Peacock on Friday because there’s really no other reason to do so earlier. And I don’t really care about the expense. I’ll pay $5.99 to watch a Michigan game. But when I’m paying for it, I expect a good product. When I paid for cable, I expected ESPN and FS1 and BTN to give me a good product. Otherwise, I’ll just turn off the volume and think through it myself. I don’t need Mike Tirico and one of the Simms brothers to tell me what’s happening on the game. Peacock actually complied – presumably on accident – when there was just no audio for several minutes. The fourth quarter feed got blurry, too, but maybe that had something to do with my local internet. But Peacock also cut out a play, there was no pregame show, the halftime show was boring, and oh yeah . . . the Simms kid isn’t exactly top-notch. If I wanted crappy analysis, I would watch some of the ex-Buckeye talking heads like Josh Perry and Joey Galloway.

Hit the jump for more.

2023 Season Countdown: #20a Tommy Doman

Tommy Doman

Name: Tommy Doman
Height:
6’4″
Weight:
215 lbs.
High school:
Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s
Position:
Kicker/Punter
Class:
Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number:
#19
Last year:
I ranked Doman #44 and said he would be a backup kicker/punter (LINK). He was 2/2 on extra points and punted 1 time for 41 yards.
TTB Rating:
 N/A

Michigan has mostly been very good on special teams since Jim Harbaugh was hired in 2015.

Going into the 2023 season, there are more questions on special teams than in any other year.

Jake Moody and Brad Robbins were selected by the 49ers and the Bengals, respectively, and returner A.J. Henning transferred to Northwestern. That leaves the unproven Doman, freshman Adam Samaha, Louisville transfer James Turner, and redshirt freshman transfer Hudson Hollenbeck to duke it out for kicking duties.

Doman was a highly valued kicking prospect coming out of high school, but he hasn’t had much of a shot to show his stuff at the college level. He kicked a couple extra points during blowouts last year, and he punted once, too. The hope is that he can step up rather seamlessly, but Moody and Robbins were both pretty dang good, which is why they both got drafted. My feel is that Doman will end up serving as the punter, and perhaps Hollenbeck can push him a little bit. Doman averaged 44.8 yards per punt as a high school senior, but sometimes those averages are fortified by high school punt returners who are too afraid to touch the ball, so they just let it bounce and roll. If he can replicate that number as a redshirt sophomore in 2023, Michigan should be in decent shape.

Prediction: Starting punter

2022 Season Countdown: #44 Tommy Doman

Doman was a backup kicker/punter combo guy in 2021, and he went the entire way through the season without being needed. Kicker Jake Moody stayed healthy and focused, and so did punter Brad Robbins. It seemed like an oddity to be able to get through the season using only those two guys, because before that, Quinn Nordin had been in the mix and both Moody/Nordin played kicker quite a bit the previous couple years. Not only that, but Robbins suffered from back issues earlier in his career.

The Michigan program is probably better for this, but Doman had to be a little disappointed this off-season when both Moody and Robbins chose to exercise their COVID exemption and return for an extra year of eligibility.

I hope the health and consistency remain in place, but Doman should be the primary backup at both spots and going two years in a row without needing a backup to play would be a bit surprising. So here Doman is at #44 because I think he’ll be needed at some point this year.

Prediction: Backup kicker/punter

2021 Season Countdown: #71 Tommy Doman

Name: Tommy Doman
Height:

Weight:
184 lbs.
High school:
Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s
Position:
Punter
Class:
Freshman
Jersey number:

Last year:
Doman was a senior in high school (LINK). He completed 6/7 field goals and averaged 44.8 yards per punt.
TTB Rating:

When it comes to special teams and projecting high school guys to the college level, I have never pretended to know exactly how that will shape up. There are too many unknowns – the prowess of the long snapper, holder, etc. – and I’m not well versed in the mechanics of kicking or punting.

Did ball go far? Good. Good ball go far.

In Doman’s case, good ball go far.

He hit a 53-yard field and bombed a couple 58-yard punts during the shortened 2020-2021 season. The kicking sites think he’s good, and that’s about all I have to go on.

As for how he fits into the plans for 2021, it’s entirely possible that he gets playing time. Senior kicker Jake Moody (1/4 on field goals in 2020) has been inconsistent, and Quinn Nordin (2/5) opted for a shot at the NFL. Meanwhile, punter Will Hart (37.8 yards/attempt) transferred, leaving the punting duties to Brad Robbins (45.3 yards/attempt), a guy who missed a big chunk of his early career with injury.

I would guess Doman will be the primary backup at both kicker and punter, and with Moody’s questionable mindset, I think Doman is more likely to take over the placekicking role, barring injury to Robbins. I expect to see him on the field this fall in some capacity.

Prediction: Backup kicker/punter
